here's my second project, the man in black, in all his warped glory (the canvas stretched in strange ways once i started - i'm hoping my buddy at the framing store will be able to sort him out). i used finer yarn and canvas for him (so he took longer than debbie) - all in all, not as happy as i was with the first piece. i'd love some feedback on how the design here compares to my first, for future stuff.

I'm loving him even more, actually. He takes up the space better than Debbie, she had too much empty space on the left, but Johnny is centered and looking good and weird, like he should! I have a friend who would pay $500 for that, no kidding....

i love mishmashes of media, like origami with fashion magazines (my other current fixation) and, here, music, needlework, and warhol-ish portraiture. surprisingly, one of the toughest parts of the initial design stuff is finding an image i can adapt for a project; i must have trolled google images for three hours before finding a shot of debbie harry that could be manipulated for a canvas. same with johnny, especially since he's so craggy. then photoshop for a few hours, then taking the image to kinko's and blowing it up and playing with brightness...then squinting and harrumphing at my finished image in front of a wall of yarn. i got interesting looks from the craft store ladies for waving a photo of johnny cash around for half an hour, as you might imagine. though blondie and JC are both favorites of mine, i actually didn't listen to any of their stuff while i sewed...until i discovered i'd bought the wrong shade of grey yarn for johnny, at which point i listened to "live at folsom prison" a lot...

I love that so much! When we first opened our shop/gallery it was just the same time that he died and we created an exhibition of everyone's Johnny Cash artwork- your's would have stolen the show!

I am just in awe of these portraits!! They're incredible! Ya know what's funny? My husband out of the blue was talking about JC last nite, and I come here and there's the man himself starin' right back at me! *Twilight Zone music plays*
