Pull-tab treat can
Thursday February 09th, 2006 08:50 AM
pop-top treat can

I posted this on my blog, but thought I'd share it here since it is pretty quick and easy to make and perfect for little Valentines!

Get a can with a pull-tab lid. Turn the can upside down, use a safety can opener to cut open the bottom. Unlike a traditional can opener, a safety can opener goes along the outside (not inside the lip of the can) so you are left with a piece that can be glued to the bottom.

Empty the contents into another container.

Fill the can with little treats (mini candy bars, little notes, plastic trinkets, etc).

Glue the bottom back on with a non-smelly glue (this is not the project to use something like E6000).

Decorate a strip of paper and afix it right side up on the can.

Loop a little note through the tab instructing the recipient to pull it open!

ETA:
Per the questions below, I went looking for options similar to what I used.
Diamond Glaze by Judi Kins can be found at some stamp or scrap shops, but I don't see it on the Michaels or Joanns web site. But I do recall seeing a metal glue from Making Memories that is for afixing metal embellishments.

That's a great idea! I absolutely have to do this. What kind of glue did you use? The only kinds I've used are E6000 (definitely not the right choice) and Aleene's Tacky glue...but I've never used that on metal so I don't know if it would hold.

Heh...I think I may have to suprise my boy with a can of spaghettios that have toys or candy in them instead of spaghetti.

I used Crystal Effects, which is from Stampin' Up. I didn't mention it since SU is a direct sales company and didn't want to sound like an advert (although I'm just a customer, not a seller). I'm not sure what it would be similar to...

I've used Alene Tacky Glue to glue metal studs to fabric so that might work on this project, Chelsea.

ANG, you're right you could do it with any container, I like the pull-tab because then I don't have to carry a can opener with me or scramble for one!
