Q: I'm interesting in learning how to bead chains, purses, etc. Can anyone recommend a good book or website with instructions for novices?

A: 'Creative Bead Weaving', I think is the title...by 'Carol Wilcox Wells'. Excellent beading primer, and projects to start. Also, try http://beadwork.miningco.com for basic instructions. http://www.suzannecooper.com has some instructions, too. There is a site from 'The Mining Co.' that has every type of instruction that you would need.
