    favorite memoirs

the post about Reading Lolita in Tehran got me thinking of autobiographies/memoirs and how much i love reading them. I have an entire shelf dedicated to memoir and took an autobiography class. I like them because it's such an intimate glimpse into someone's life and despite the whole argument about the true truth of memoirs (think the whole James Frey A Million Little Pieces Oprah debacle) it is a true expression/relationship of writing and memory.

I also like biographies, but there is something truly exciting about reading a memoir....I studied history, and that's pretty much series of biographies written about specific times and locations, but there's a sense of sincerity and intimacy when it comes to memoirs. I guess I just like life stories!

    my favorites are:

    This Boy's Life- Tobias Wolff
    Assata-Assata Shakur
    The Glass Castle- Jeanette Walls
    Take the Cannoli-Sarah Vowell
    Autobiography of a Face-Lucy Grealy
I'm Not the New ME- Wendy McClure
Persepolis I & II- Marjane Satrapi
Me Talk Pretty One Day- DAvid Sedaris

up on my list to read- Julie and Julia, An Alphabetical Life, A Self-Made Man.

    any suggestions?

Soon to be a Major Motion Picture by Abbie Hoffman. An account of his life up to the time he was hiding underground from the government. An amazing story of an activist that really influenced me. Funny too.

Didn't Ronald Reagan's just get published recently - I'd like to hear if those are any good.

if he wrote it within, say, 15 years of his death, i imagine it's not all that great.

HA. seriously though, i don't wish Alzheimer's on anyone, but it makes me cringe that people are canonizing Reagan as some kind of American Hero.

i love David Sedaris and Anne Lamott, but i don't read a ton of memoirs. i'd like to read the one on Abbie Hoffman, though.
