Hey Nerf! Blueberries are a great source of antioxidants. So is dark chocolate. So there's got to be some in milk chocolate?

My favorite comfort foods come from my parents' backgrounds. My dad is Swiss-Italian, so I love polenta! Big giant bowls of it with blue cheese and marinara or parmesan and butter. Or gnocchi.

My mom's family is Southern, and I just love chicken and dumplings, and biscuits. Mmmm.

It would have been shorter to just type: I love carbohydrates!

Ben and jerry's - any kind will do..

And grits - I LOVE grits, but I love them more when I need some warmth/comfort.

I agree too, that the fries and eggs sound good...I may have to give that a shot instead of grits next time.

yes! the paprika and lemon are my adult additions to the recipe. you can leave those off for the original experience. hahahahahaha

french fries and eggs is an old greek mama standby. my grandmother (who made the best ever) and my mom made it for me when i was a kid. i have greek friends who also love this. sometimes, my mom makes it for me now.

Maybe I misread but I didn't see many comfort steaks listed.

What's the scientific/emotional connection between starch and soothing?

I don't know about the scientific connection, but a lot of starch makes me sleepy. I guess that makes me feel less wound up, hence 'happier'.

Also starches are very filling, which can be comforting.

I'd like to second the big bowl of cereal!

starches break down quickly into simple sugars, which induce your body to release insulin, which leads to an increase in the amount of the amino acid tryptophan in your system... tryptophan is what your body uses to make serotonin, so the increase in Trp leads to an increase in serotonin... and serotonin is a feel-good neurotransmitter.

i'm a little foggy on why the release of insulin leads to increased Trp levels, but i'm pretty sure that's why starchy foods are so comforting.
