    cherry pineapple dump cake?

    does anyone here make this?

it's where you take a can of pineapple, dump it in a pan. dump in a can of cherries on top of it. dump a half a box of yellow cake mix on top of that, and then add half a stick of melted butter on top of that.

anyone know what i can use to make that crumbly topping instead of cake mix? i just don't have any on hand, and the cake is $$ enough without adding $3 for what's probably just flour and sugar which i already have.

i think a crumb topping is just brown sugar, ap flour, and melted butter mixed together untill its crumbly looking.

Maybe use a Betty Crocker type cake recipe, minus the liquids?

I like oatmeal in my crumb toppings too, but that's usually for strudel I suppose...

I have my mother's old Better Homes & Gardens cookbook! It has the following recipe, which I hope helps:

    2 Tablespoons butter or margarine
    1/2 Cup brown sugar
    4 pineapple slices, drained
6 maraschino cherries, cut in fourths
    1-1/4 Cups sifted enriched flour
    1/2 Cup sugar
    2 teaspoons baking powder
    1/2 teaspoons salt
    1/3 Cup shortening
1/2 Cup minus 1 Tablespoon pineapple syrup
    1/2 teaspoon grated lemon peel
    1 egg

Melt butter in 8x8x2" pan. Stir in brown sugar. Halve pineapple slices; place in mixture; center with 3 cherry pieces.

Sift dry ingredients together over softened shortening. Add remaining ingredients. Beat 2 minutes. Pour over pineapple.

Bake in moderate oven (375) for 45 minutes. Let stand 5 minutes; turn upside down.

Ya... we make that. Minus the pineapple.
It's 1 can of cherries, and their juice. One stick of melted butter, and one box of yellow cake mix. Dump it all into a metal/pyrex bowl that can handle baking.
Mix it all up. Stick in the oven at 350'F for awhile until it's golden brown on top.
I personally don't like the cherries...
I want to try one with white cake mix and blueberries and butter, or something.

I think the crumbly top is just butter and yellow cake mix mixed in a bowl until it's crumbly....but that probably doesn't help.
Do you mean like a struesel topping?

    thanks for all the advice!

    Homemade Cake Mix

I want to share a recipe for homemade cake mix; maybe you can try it next time! We make a "Dump" cake, too, using margarine instead of butter so my vegan brother-in-law can enjoy a giant piece. Yum!

Combine the following ingredients in a large bowl:
    2 1/4 cups sifted flour
    1 tablespoon baking powder
    1 1/2 cups sugar
    3/4 teaspoon salt

Cut-in 1/2 cup solid vegetable shortening with a pastry blender until the mixture looks something like cornmeal.

Use 3 1/2 cups of this mixture instead of a box of cake mix.
