I use that kind of staff https://wowpencils.com/best-pastel-pencils/ . They are good for creating the illusion of smooth surfaces with suble gradients of color. That means they are good, generally speaking, for human faces in natural light and water surfaces with minimum reflections, as well as landscapes

I prefer oil pastel paintings. I use oil pastel colors to color the backgrounds and a glass marking pencil and a hb 8 or 10 p3ncil to draw the sketches. Take a look at some of my oil paintings below.
