I like the old Miss Manners reply to personal and annoying questions: Now, how sweet of you to be concered, but how is it possibly your business?

Of course, you say that with a sweet, sticky smile on your face.

On a similar note, when my mother or a friend would give me unwanted advice about childrearing or marriage, I would said, "Wow, Mom/Friend. What advice did your mom/friend give you that used to make YOU want to scream?"

ditto the advice about just being nonchalant. if they really push their tirades, just go with a noncommittal 'hm" grunt or say, I'm sorry you feel that way, but this is how it is. just don't worry about it. they're obviously not going to change your mind with their BS and you unfortunately won't be able to change theirs. so don't waste your energy trying! :)

awww, I wish I'd read this earlier. You sound a lot like me. In that situation, probably my best response would be "I came to have fun. Let's not have this conversation right now." Then I would turn around and walk away. :)
