Embroidered pillow cases or table linens?
A nice crocheted lap robe that actually has something to do with my color scheme.
A hand-painted or otherwise decorated "art" vase or vessel.
I also really like wine glass rings, the ones that help you tell one glass from another. I like them made from bits of jewelry, like earrings whose mates are lost. I like the thought there's life after being de-paired.

I love offering the following example:
I received two handmade knit Christmas stockings. Each has one of our names on it. One has a snowman and one has Santa. We use them every single year (obviously) and they are a big part of our decorations. And they are beautiful!!!!!

The nicest handcrafted gift we got was a good sized box decorated with different classic hollywood wedding images (with Audrey Hepburn being the focal point) for us to store our wedding cards in.
-
What about a photo album (not neccessarily a wedding album) with a cover you have decorated or customised in some way?

We got, and really loved, a cross stitch piece with our new name and wedding date, a beautiful crocheted afghan, a homade lamp. The registry gifts were nice, but the personal touches really stood out!

For someone in your situation with limited finances, maybe a good idea would be to create a little coupon type book with "services" the bride and groom could "cash in". Or if they are going on a long honeymoon, could you vounteer to care for their house/pets etc while they are away? Or, maybe you could make them a picnic hamper of goodies and buy a nice bottle of wine & treat them to a romantic picnic when they return?
I don't know. Do other people have an idea of where I'm going with this, or am I being a bit lame?
Do you make any sort of crafty things which you could give as a gift?
The only rule I can think of is that a gift should be for both of them equally, so dangly, girly earrings are probably not a good idea (unless the groom is into that, of course :-) ...)
OK, I've thought of one more thing: you could take some candid photos of them on the big day then create a little scrapbook or album to give to them. One of the things I most loved about my wedding was getting copies of all my friends candid shots of the day. They show lots of little details not seen in the official photographs.
OR,
Do you already have lots of photos of the couple? Maybe you could make some sort of collage and frame it?
Hopefully if none of these ideas work they might at least inspire you in some other direction!

The best wedding present was scented massage oil! In fact, a basket of home-made bath products for the honeymoon would be a perfect gift. It could even include something like homemade cookies or brownies.

If you know the colors of their home, maybe make them pillows or a throw for their couch.
Check the china pattern for clues of what they like.
