I don't know any specific brands...but I do know that a vacuum that is self-propelled is awesome. The one we have now isn't, and after being used to one, it feels like something's wrong with it. It's so much easier.

I don't know if you'd be able to find one of these (check garage sales, thrift stores, flea markets...) but we have this old Royal vacuum, probably from the seventies, that is the BEST VACUUM EVER.

We used to have a Rainbow Machine (one of those ones that spits the dust into a basin of water) but it doesn't work as well, plus it's a HUGE hassle to set up, and then you have to go dump the nasty water somewhere. But we both love our Royal. Even my husband is okay with vacuuming now.

Don't have a roomba but I have an Oreck. Just the 8lb standard one; but it works great and is simple to take apart when need be
(I clogged up the hose with thick paper that had been shredded by my dogs)

It does have a bag, but we had a bagless in the past and didn't like it.

We have hardwood all over and few rugs scattered about the house,I've tried them all and I love my Miele! It was expensive but with allergies, dog hair & dust it sucks up everything! I have to change the head for the rugs to the rotating head and a dust sweephead for the hardwood..that's the only thing that sucks! Bags last a long time too! 3-6 months

We saved and saved and finally got a dyson, the animal version. It's amazing how much cat hair it sucks up. And it's so satisfying to see it all the canister. I just vacuumed last night.

I agree, I saved for months to buy the Dyson Animal. It has been worth every penny. We have 2 basset hounds and they shed like crazy. This vaccum picks up every speck of dust and hair on the carpet & furniture.
