    Laundry question

Apparently, I am the world's most disgusting person, because when I took out my polka-dotted shirt the other day I noticed HUGE yellow armpit stains AND a big, nasty, ring around the collar. That same day I noticed that I had some armpit stains coming in on the dress I was wearing, too. I tried a stain remover and they still look the same. Neither are all white so I don't know if I can use bleach on them. I'm pretty new to doing my own laundry, so some help on how to get the nastiness out would be appreciated.

You can try making a paste of baking soda and water. Apply to the stains and let sit for about 20 minutes, then wash as usual.

I used to wear deodorant w/ anti-perspirant in it. I discovered that sweat combined with anti-perspirant was causing the staining. I switched to plain deodorant (Tom's of Maine) and haven't had the problem since.

Yeah, using natural deodorant definitely reduces the stains.

Alas, it also makes me stinky and pit-sweaty! (But then again, I just have supersweaty pits.)

If you must wear anti-perspirant, here's a tip: At Trader Joe's they sell this great laundry additive called Oxo-Brite (I've seen it at Whole Foods too). Adding a scoop of this stuff to my loads has allowed me to wear white shirts again.

Oxyclean does the same thing, too. I use it the same way.

Thanks for the advice--I'll try the baking soda and if that doesn't work I'll spring for some Oxyclean or an analog of Oxyclean.

Is Oxo-Brite safe to use on colours?

I use it with all of my loads, and most of the clothes I wear are black, and I've never had a problem. According to the label it's earth-friendly too! (If earth-friendly even means anything more than an advertising catchphrase, that is.)

Can't vouch for Oxyclean, though ... I've never used it.

Sweat stains have oils in them which is why they are harder to wash out. If you take a piece of white sidewalk chalk and rub over it and then let it sit a bit brush off as much as you can and then wash it, the chalk should help draw out the oils resulting in removal of the stain.

Fun. It is like coloring, but with pit stains. I'm totally in to this.
