I need some advice + good thoughts sent my way

Last September my dad moved in with us, well sort of-- he bought a camper and parked it in our drive way. I don't want to go into gruesome detail but he was a very BIG pebble in some very delicate clockwork since he's moved in, he finally moved out but now I'm left with a business that needs attention, a home and children that need attention, and 8 months of mortgage to pay up ASAP. I'm really trying to stay positive and just telling my husband that we'll dig ourselves out of this mess but 2 things:

#1) he pretty much forced us out of business for over 8 months

#2) I don't literally don't have a dime to my name right now

My businesses are http://quantumspindles.com and http://yarnporn.com if you want to take a look and give me some feedback or suggestions on either I'd really appreciate it. Or if you've ever been in a similar situation and have some words of wisdom to share, ditto. I know I'm going to need quite a while to sort out the emotional stuff, but I don't feel like I have the time to spend doing that and letting our businesses slide any further.

    Thanks in advance.

I too have no money right now. If I did, I would order one of your drop spindles right away. They look so pretty. Your yarn is lovely too, but I don't know how to use it beyond a granny square. Your sites are great and I'm sure the ladies around here will love them. Good luck to you!

I landed at the godaddy placeholder as well. Is there another path into your site?

I hope the web host thing can be easily resolved and I wish you all of the best with improving your situation.

I am changing hosts, the other one was too slow and there are some hiccups in the process, it will probably be another day before my websites are back up.

i think your yarn is nice. i'm a spinner, so i wouldn't buy it, but i'm sure it would appeal to non-spinners. another "just me" thing is that i don't care for pastel colors, and you don't offer any brighter or darker colors right now.

thinking of things from the perspective of a non-spinning shopper...

    1. the close-up pictures are really blurry and low-quality. i'm not going to buy something i can't see in detail. maybe you could borrow a better digital camera, or just upload higher quality images.

    2. it's not totally clear and apparent that all of the yarns are handspun. it would be a good idea to remind people that they are handspun in each description, or people might assume it's really expensive for Henry's Attic stuff. i know it says that all the yarns are handspun on the sidebar, but my eye was not drawn to that information, and i only noticed it after looking for a few minutes.

    3. i'm assuming that your web design isn't done, so you can probably disregard this... if your website IS done, it's not all that slick, and you could probably find a design student or wannabe to redo it for cheap.

    4. personally, i think the name "YarnPorn" is cute, but realize that it might turn some people off.

i know this is pretty blunt advice, but i also know that making a living as an artist is really hard, so i'm sure you want people's actual opinions.

**the quantumspindles site is still down, and the URL just gets you to a raw list of the contents.

LOL don't worry I'm not going to whine because I asked for honest advice and got it. I'd be far worse off if you blew smoke and told me everything was wonderful when it's not.

Thanks, I really do appreciate it.

    My honest feedback about quantumspindles.com:

While all of the things you make look like they are probably really pretty I saw a number of trouble spots...

    1. "Spindles" "Nostpinne" "Spinning" & "Weaving" are all broken links.
    2. The image on the contact paige does not load.
    3. You should build a whitebox or lightbox to take the pictures in so that they are clearer and glareless.
    4. Your fonts do not go together
    5. Stella is right about possibly hiring someone to redo your site, or pick up a book at the library about site design.
    6. The pictures shoud be able to be enlarged
    7. The navigation is wonkie; there is no link for home, you have to back browse to get back to it

    Have you tried google promotion?

When my first host went down so did my google ranking, the second host ran scripts to keep google bots from spidering our pages (and the file containing the most recent copy of my site was corrupted) so things kind suck because I'm fixing them and dealing with yet another server move. We went from 8/10 to 3/10 in rank because of all this stuff.

(Keep in mind that I have 11 websites and I can only work on them one at a time and that I posted my request **before** I had to move servers the first time.)

Reflective surfaces on wood turning is desirable unless you're turning a low chatoyance wood (which we're not) although it might be bad photography we have to represent our products.

Fonts don't go together-- I don't understand that one. The body font is times family-- are you talking about the fonts in the navigation bar?

the new design on YarnPorn is much nicer, but it really looks like a blog and not a shop. for me, it would be more clear what was going on if you separated your blog from your shop more distinctly. is your shopping cart secure? you don't say that anywhere on the site, and few people will purchase using a checkout system that doesn't at least SAY it's encrypted. also, the HTML is wonky, so the text and reply form overlap with the navigation bar. i am using Safari, so you might want to make sure your site works with other not-IE browsers.

i can't even load QuantumSpindles, so i'm not sure what's going on there.
