    home made fabric softener?

whats a good home made, DIY fabric softener?

i heard an old washcloth dipped in a solution of 1/2 fabric softener and 1/2 water and thrown in the dryer works well.

i also heard that a cloth dipped in hair conditioner works too.

but i dont wanna experiment and screw up my clothes.

what solutions have worked for people?

    thanks in advance =)

Bed, Bath & Beyond sells a pair of reuseable, bumpy rubber balls that you throw into the dryer with your wet clothes. (Throw one ball in, that is...) Their agitation helps soften the cloth fibers without chemicals or harm to the clothes.

They sell for $9.99 the pair. I haven't tried it, but I've seen it written about and am seriously considering purchase.

thank you! i'll try that. i think i'll try that in combo with the washcloth & 1/2 fabric softener/1/2 water mix.

any other suggestions people have would be greatly appreciated...

so do you add vinegar to the wash cycle or do you dip a washcloth in vinegar and add it to the dryer cycle?

and should you use apple cider vinegar or plain old regular vinegar?

you could probably smell the vinegar on the clothes if you put it in the dryer. i put vinegar in my wash water sometimes because i live in a very hard water area and it helps keep the dingy hard water buildup down. it doesn't seem to soften the clothes, but it might help if you live in a hard water area.

i think fabric softener is totally pointless, but i'm a hippie like that. it's not like clothes come out of the dryer unwearable and rock-hard, it's just another product for someone to make money off of. i'm also allergic to fabric softeners, and the fragrance from them that lingers on other people's clothing is allergenic and irritating to me, so i'm all around just not a fan.

I agree the vinegar is probably not a good idea, but if I don't use anything then my clothes get all staticy (is staticy a word?)

I actually like the Arm & Hammer fabric softener, but after just doing a quick search I saw:
    http://www.thefrugalshopper.com/articles/softener.shtml
    and
    http://organizedhome.com/content-8.html
both actually do have vinegar in them. But my favorite site for homemade stuff is www.bhg.com - they are the best resource for ideas out there I think.

I have the bumpy balls "As seen on TV" and I really can't decide if they are working or not. My clothes are soft, but they seem a little more static-y. They do seem to help get cat hair off. What makes it through the wash seems to pill up more by using the balls. Has anyone else tried them yet?
