My DIY Black and White Foyer Makeover!

    Picture at: http://www.sisteroo.com/2011/07/entr...-makeover.html

Until two weeks ago, my entry foyer consisted of a beige wall, completely blank except for a blinking security keypad (proof below). Good layout for a state penitentiary, not-so-good as a first impression of my home. I thoughtfully assembled a wish list of items for MY DREAM ENTRY FOYER, only to discover that MY DREAM ENTRY FOYER belongs to a very wealthy individual (i.e. not me). The total cost of those gorgeous items was well over six times my decorating budget ($200). Rats--foiled again by basic economics.

I didn’t want to cop out on Sisteroos, so instead of resorting to plan B (giving up), I turned to the ever-useful THREE C’s: Craigslist, Coupons and Craftiness. Here’s what happened:

CRAIGSLIST saved the day with a hand-stamped pinkish bunny and heart (whaa??) side table for $10. I already own a formidable paint collection, and attacked the bunnies and hearts with multiple layers of The Gripper (the most amazing primer on the market). The Gripper has never let me down and covers even the most challenging surfaces if applied in multiple thin layers. After a day of drying, the primed table received some TLC with a few coats of my favorite glossy black paint (RustOleum Painter's Touch). I topped everything off with a few layers of lacquer. End result: a console table that looks just as amazing as my dream console, for a fraction of the price.

A heaven-sent 20%-off COUPON from Pier 1 made the divine capiz inlay mirror possible. I’ve found that Pier 1 is fairly liberal with coupon distribution, and if you sign up for their newsletters, you too may receive an endless stack of them. You have been warned.

CRAFTINESS brought about the third, most important element in the foyer: a sparkly textured taupe vase. I acquired a rusty metal vase for $8, sanded it, coated it in none other than The Gripper and a nice thick topcoat of Folk Art’s Metallic Taupe craft paint, then glazed it with good ol’ Triple Thick (also used on the gemmy cupcake project). For gorgeous depth and sparkle, I glued glass beads ($2/box from Walmart) to the base and top of the vase.

HOLY STINKING MACKEREL! My entry foyer looks even better than if I’d won the lottery and purchased every item from that wish list. Go DIY!

I know this is old but just viewed all of your past posts and this is beautiful. I love your blog, and I love Pier 1 but hate buying full price. Checking online coupons and their daily deals now is a great way to save on top of sale prices, even just to get one unique piece that pulls all of the other plain bargain pieces together. Found a few 30% offs recently! Whoot!
