    Attention Bloggers...

I would like to start a blog to share my crafts and my musings about life...but I have no cotton-picking idea about how to go about it.

I will be contacting a few crafty/knitty bloggers whose sites I frequent, but was wondering if any of you here had any advice or insights regarding the costs, the time requirements, supplies and any other resources/thoughts/warnings, etc. etc.

Also, could you pretty-please-with-brown sugar-on top include a link to your blog if possible?

    Thanks!

Blogspot from Blogger - http://www.blogger.com - would be an easy way to get started. I don't use Blogspot but I think it is fairly simple to set up... and free!

I do use Blogger with my own domain. My hosting service is Jatol - http://www.jatol.com.

I suppose it will depend on how comfortable you are with html.

Another nifty and cheap place to start would be TypePad - http://www.typepad.com/. TypePad has a monthly fee, but it is fairly cheap. And TypePad has lots of nifty things built in that Blogger does not - like a commenting system.

So I guess if you want to go the easy way, you could get started with Blogspot or TypePad, see how you like it, and later if you needed to you could get your own domain name and move your blog.

Oh, and my blog link is down below...

Well, to me my personal blog and a subject-oriented blog are two different animals. :)

Two crafty blogs that I like, but are definitely not mine are

    Not Martha: http://megan.scatterbrain.org/notmartha/

    and

    Sew Geeky: http://www.sewgeeky.com/

That might be a little inspiration for you. :)

totally off topic, but peppermintsquare, are you happy with Jatol? I've been thinking of moving my webpage to them. they seem to offer a whole bunch of stuff for very very little $$.

I'm pretty happy with blogger. The new changes kinda suck and I refuse to use the comments section from there but it's super easy to learn and completely customizable with different html codes. I was using BlogSpot for quite a while (even figured out how to get rid of the ad...I know, bad me.) but just recently started hosting it on my site. Hasn't given me any problems so far.

    Here's my blog:

Definitely update us when you get your blog up and running. I love reading crafty blogs!

Wow. I did not even realize that Blogger had commenting now since I had been remiss to check out all of the new features. Nifty. It looks like they are adding some of the things that made Movable Type and TypePad so appealing. I will have to check it all out when I have time.

And I too love reading crafty blogs!

Oops. I forgot to answer that. I am happy with Jatol. I can't remember my site ever going down (if it has, it was for such a minimal amount of time that I don't recall it). They do offer loads of stuff - I don't even know what all of the features do that they offer. For a brief period of time, I even added a bulletin board to my site - offered by Jatol, so easy to add.

They were my first web hosting company so I don't have anything to compare them to though. I have been with them for just over a year.

I have never needed to contact them for tech support, so I can't say whether that aspect of the service is good or not.

I use diaryland for my personal blog, I've had it there for a few years now and it works for me. It is not very powerful unless you buy a membership, I just use the free one since I just wanted a simple, easy blog.

I also have a group blog with some friends on blogger and I like that too.

I use HaloScan on my Blogger sites, and I've been pretty happy with it. My blog is not heavily trafficked, so I can't speak for its goodness with high quantities of comments. Pamie.com seems to run okay with it, though, and Pam gets tons of comments.

I'm not sure how on-topic that was, sorry if it was too much of a rabbit trail. I use Blogger -- I only know basic HTML, so I'm starting off slow -- and I like it, except for not being able to post images without doing some sort of run-around thing. It's nice because you can make modifications to the template without having to do it all from scratch. (Mine's http://bitca.blogspot.com , but I haven't been able to update for a long time since I don't have a connection of my own right now.)
