Drawing Class
I've just come home from my last drawing class.
I wanted to do a quick post to encourage anyone um-ing and ah-ing about whether they should take a class (in any subject) to do it, without hesitating!
After my first class I was distraught because I felt so hopeless. I'm so glad I stuck with it.
Over the last seven weeks I've:
* made a new friend
* brushed up on my conversational skills and got to know some very interesting people who I might not have met otherwise
* become more adventurous
* learnt how many of my students must feel when they can't immediatley "get" something
* felt a sense of achievement
* been reminded about how important it is to be patient and persistent
* felt a sense of community
* laughed my head off
* learnt some drawing skills
I had the best time, so much so that my class is now organising to continue together in a new course! If you have the chance, join a class!

Drawing classes are fun like that!
At my college, it's funny because every dep't is kind of isolated, so they form these groups.
But it's kinda sad because the science/engineering and art people don't mingle very much, and I have to deal with jokes about artists on one sides, and then jokes about engineers on the other! gagh.
But the sense of community is really cool.
What kind of drawing are you taking? Beginning? What mediums are you using? I loved working with charcoal! I was so scared at first, but it's fun to do.

i couldn't agree with you more. taking a class is the best way to get out of any kind of rut.

It was just the best fun. It was a beginners class, but I was surprised by how challenging some of the tasks were - I learnt a lot more than I was expecting to. We started using pencil, and experimented with a watercolour lead pencil in the last class but by far my favourite thing about the course was my introduction to charcoal! Every time I used it I was in a frenzy, it was like I was possessed. I'd leave the class having covered (it seemed) every surface, as well as half the skin on my face and arms, with charcoal smudges. I luuuurve charcoal!

Great! It's great to learn a skill or take a class where you're a little "out of your element", good break from the regular routine. Maybe I'll take a drawing class this summer...

Are drawing classes worth it?
