What about the silents? Oh, the silent comedies are my favorite! You had to be multi-talented in the early days - write, direct, act, do your own stunts (which were much more dangerous then, too), and often, compose your own musical score.

    Here's my list:

    1. City Lights - Chaplin

and the rest, in no particular order (other than the silents first!):

    Girl Shy - Lloyd
    The General - Keaton
    Steamboat Bill, Jr. - Keaton
    The Gold Rush - Chaplin
    Saftey Last! - Lloyd

The Shop Around the Corner - (dir. Lubitsch) James Stewart
Shadow of a Doubt - dir. Hitchcock
Breakfast at Tiffany's - (dir. Edwards) Audrey Hepburn
It Happened One Night - (dir. Capra) Gable & Colbert

Okay, I definitely need to see Rear Window. Maybe I'll do that this summer.

    Tentative list:

    Casablanca
    Citizen Kane
    Harvey
    The Lady Eve
    The Misfits
    Now, Voyager
    Psycho
    Rebel without a Cause
    Rope
    Vertigo

I clearly love Jimmy Stewart and Hitchcock.

I need to watch some more old movies. There are a ton I want to see, and I have seen hardly any of the "staples" like West Side Story. I'm like a late bloomer of old movie watching or something.

One of my faves, Gaslight, is on Turner Classic movies right now. Ooo...it's so dark and creepy. Ingrid Bergman, Joseph Cotten, Charles Boyer, and (my fave) a very young Angela Lansbury. Delicious.

Has anyone every seen "When We Were Young and Gay"? it is a fabulous movie about two girls in the 20's who go off to Europe after they graduate from college.

So cute and funny, and I only ever caught it once, late at night on AMC. Apparently it was based on the true life account that the two women wrote about their trip!

Oooh good thread! Yay for Hitchcock!

I have many repeats of movies already mentioned. I especially love Arsenic and Old Lace.

There is a very cute (1930s?) movie called The Penquin Pool Murders. I especially like it because the romantic leading lady is probably in her 50s.

I also really like Clara Bow. See It if you get a chance, she was amazing.

And thanks for all the recommendations!

ohhh, this is a FUN question for me! i go for more kitschy stuff apparently.

    1. VERTIGO or PSYCHO, it's hard to decide which - they are both cinematically amazing.
    2. THE WARRIORS - self explanatory.
    3. LOVE IN THE AFTERNOON - audrey hepburn perfects the mousy/siren image. it's a bit girl detective and quite comic, adorable!
    4. BREATHLESS - jean luc goddard's first film - i had seen many of the anna karena's before this one (which i love all of them especially MY LIFE TO LIVE), but i was shocked this was his first.
    5. ROPE - most underrated alfred hitchcock film
    6. BARBARELLA - so good it's bad - i love retro futurism, and it got me pretty obsessed with jane fonda.
    7. CABARET - bob fosse and liza manelli as an insane flapper + sexual exploration = bad ass musical.
    8. THE SOUND OF MUSIC
    9. THE NIGHT OF THE IGUANA - one of THE most intense tennessee williams adaptations i've ever seen.
    10. WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF? - it doesn't hurt that richard burton is one of my fav actors, but this is my fav of him and liz - it's beautiful cinema in general, yet so vulgar at times.
