    movies to rent

There were some wonderful suggestions for movies to rent on the old boards and now I have gone through the list I made! Any suggestions for movies that could be found at the rental store, library or netflix?

Some movies off my list that I was so glad were reccomended to me-

    Fishing With John

    Go

    Ghost World

    Me Without You

    White Oleander

BTW, The first season of Northern Exposure was recently released on DVD. If you've never seen it I highly reccommend it.

eta: I guess I should add that I'm really interested in any good, independent films that have come out lately.

in addition to the others (the only one of those i've seen and wouldn't recommend is white oleander -- really slow and boring -- the book is much better):

    the graduate
    blues brothers
    fight club
    mystery, alaska
    scotland, pa
    the good girl

    movies NOT to rent:
    one hour photo

Ooh, I loved "One Hour Photo!"

    I recommend:
any Wes Anderson movie ("Rushmore" is my favorite)
    "Igby Goes Down"
    "Adaptation"

Umm, there are so many good movies where do you start?
I second One Hour Photo, Donnie Darko and Rushmore--that one is so funny.
    My own mini spur-of-the-moment Oscars...

Best movie for painting your toenails to with your best friend: Gentlemen Prefer Blondes
Best movie for singing along to: Moulin Rouge
Best movie for horrible realism: Once Were Warriors
Best foreign language flick: A tie between Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Burnt by the Sun
Best repressed-woman-breaks-free period drama: Room With a View

Ummmmm, that's all I can think of now.

Yes, see Rushmore, Frida and Waiting for Guffman! Great choices. Anything by Christopher Guest is recommeded if you like to laugh your ass off (always watch the scenes that weren't used in the movie if you have the DVD version). A Mighty Wind, Best in Show, This is Spinal Tap. Lost in Translation is my favorite new movie out there. Here is a list of some of my favorites:

    The Goonies
    Spirited Away
    Clerks
    Wierd Science
    Wet Hot American Summer
    Valley Girl
    Bottle Rocket
    Committed
    Office Space
    Whale Rider
    The Hudsucker Proxy
    Welcome to the Dollhouse
    Runaway Jury
    Edward Scissorhands
    Zoolander
    Pretty in Pink
    Sugar and Spice
Anything by Kevin Smith or Tim Burton

I love movies. I should stop listing now.
