Sorry if you all consider this thread dead, but Ann Hoffman is such a wonderful author. She also write magical realism, but it is a little bit darker. I usually like my books to have happy endings- which hers rarely do- but you get such a feeling for what the characters have gone through, and why they act how they do. And it is all written so beautifully and poetically but is still completely relatable. She is my favorite author. Try: Practical Magic, Seventh Heaven, Blue Diary... there are more...

Well, if you really want to laugh I suggest Laurie Notaro. Her first book The Idiot Girls' Action-Adventure Club: True Tales from a Magnificent and Clumsy Life nearly made me pee my pants several times. It was so funny. I just finish her third book I Love Everybody (and Other Atrocious Lies): True Tales of a Loudmouth Girl and really liked it too. Her books aren't exactly heavy reading, I can finish one in a day, but they are so funny.
