What could be wrong? High liver function results.

    I'm totally stressing right now.
My dad went for his physical, got results back that he's diabetic (has four months to get on track (diet/exercise) and if that doesn't work, they're putting him on pills), and has high cholesterol and high liver function--what exactly is high I'm not clear on. He's 65.

He had a liver scan yesterday and he originally had an appt. next Tues for the results. Now, they want to see him today and they won't give results over the phone.

I know it can be normal practice that they don't give results over the phone (false interpretation being high and all), but it's still scary. And why was the appt. moved up?

Is anyone familiar with high elevated liver function and what it could be. I know it doesn't necessarily mean my father has the same, but I'm just curious as to possibilities.

    I'm real scared.

I have no idea, but try not to panic because of the moved-up appointment. It doesn't necessarily mean anything dire. It might just mean that it's something that needs to be attended to quickly. When I first got sick with my totally-manageable chronic condition, my doctor told me to cancel a trip so I could go to a specialist the next day. I assumed she would only do that if it were something really serious, but it wasn't. It was just a problem that needed to be addressed immediately or it could have turned into a more-serious problem. Because I addressed it immediately, my doctors were able to take care of it with minimal fuss.

Having done the whole miserable diagnosis roller-coaster for far longer than anyone should, my advice is to try really hard not to panic until you have good reason to panic. Most of the time, it will turn out to be something you can handle.

thank you, sallysunshine and athena. I've already shed some tears in the bathroom here at work because I tend to be a worrier. I want to know what's going on and it's killing me that I probably won't find out until later this afternoon or tonight. Then again, my dad may not know everything yet either--whatever it is, it may mean more testing.

I'm going out for a walk now to de-stress. Hopefully that helps for a while.

Is he on any medications? Lots of times medication can make for a high liver function test result.

Hi,,I just called Dad and he said the doctor is concerned with the high level of his liver and wanted to do more blood tests. He could be fine after being good with his diet. He thought he had a cyst on his liver but the doctor said the liver looks fine he has small cysts on his kidney but he said that was normal. He is having a cat scan on the liver in January. The nurse there said he is very thorough and is concerned about the high level so he wants to get to the bottom of it. Like I said if he is real good about the diet and exercise that level may come down. What a relief!!!

Email I just got from my mom. He's not out of the woods yet, but at least it seems manageable so far. We'll see how the additional blood work comes back next week.

No, ruggedchick, no meds. I think he's gone so long being healthy that this was a real wake-up call for him.

That sounds really encouraging. I think "he's very thorough" is sometimes code for "he doesn't want to get sued, so he does every possible test, just to cover his ass." (And no, I am not cynical about anything except the practice of medicine in America.) I hope everything works out!
