    Women's Health Issue

I imagine there are a lot of students here on Getcrafty who rely on student health services for birth control, so I wanted to warn you about a change that was effective 1/1/07. Due to the Federal Deficit Reduction Act of 2005 universities are no longer eligible for reduced prices for birth control - expect your monthly cost to go up 3-4 times what it was.

    Some stories on it:

Yeah, I had an unpleasant surprise last month when I went to refill my ring - it went from $8 to $35. The worst thing was, they didn't notify me! We refill through a phone request line and there was no message nor did I get a phone call before I went in to pick it up. The cashier was just "$35!" and I totally flipped. Like, started crying in the office because it isn't covered by insurance either (and I was having a really awful day anyway).

I have no idea what I'm going to do, actually. I can't go back to the Pill for medical reasons but I've seen too many condoms break for me to feel confident with them as my only bc but I can't exactly afford that much money.

Here's the opinion piece from the DP on it.

    It's just such crap.

Could you try Planned Parenthood? I think that they were not included in this change, so you might still be able to get the reduced rate through them.

That's really just sick. Federal Deficit Reduction Act? Probably they could have just as well put it under the "Patriot Act."

Anyone with long-term vision could see that birth control will save the government money in the long run, so to cut its funding, as well as funding for the other services provided by student health care clinics, under the Deficit Reduction Act is just a nasty political ploy.

Sooo I'm reading up on this and came across an interesting article.

    http://www.plannedparenthood.org/new...tion-11634.htm

    Clearly there is some backlash.

The last paragraph of the article sums it up pretty well.

I just found out about this last Wednesday because I tend to stock up! I'm so pissed. My doctor is pissed, too -- she spent a big part of our appointment together ranting against Bush. And she told me she's already written Nancy Pelosi about it.

I was thrilled to discover what a feminist my doctor is. Not so thrilled about the circumstances under which I found out.

Good thing I go to Planned Parenthood...but that royally sucks that they raised the prices like that! What the heck?
Does anyone know if we just write our congress people about it, to fight it?
I'll have to look on PP's Action Network and see if they have one to send.
Wouldn't you think in the long run it would be better for these sorts of things to be more affordable for people instead of costing so much that essentially only the rich get to use them? I just think that it's all backwards.

PP talks about the "Clinton-Lowey bill" or the Clinton-Lowey Resolution but I'm having trouble finding anything else about that and it appears their info is from last summer. So I'm wondering where that went. . .
