Painting plastic tubs (Or: finding leftovers in fridge!)

I'm in the habit of storing leftover food in the fridge using old yoghurt containers (plastic). Of course, when I look in the fridge, I think 'gosh there's a lot of yoghurt', and then a week later I clean out the fridge and find all these containers with leftover food that I forgot about.

I thought a possible solution is to paint the set of containers. Like, bright red with 'leftovers' in big white letters. Or green, with a big picture of an olive on it (I also store olives in my fridge like this).

Can I paint plastic so that the paint doesn't chip off the next time I wash the container? How do I do that? Or does anyone have other solutions for keeping track of leftovers and other mysterious fridge items?
