    Jewelrymaking question

    Hi, all -

I posted this on a beading board, but I thought I'd ask here, too. Does anyone have tips on how to secure jump rings without soldering them? I'm doing my first craft fair in a couple of weeks, and I'm paranoid that I will sell my stuff and then it will fall apart.

    Thanks. :)

    Alison

A jump ring will stay pretty tightly closed if you open/close it the right way. If you pull the sides of the ring apart when you open it, it's very tough to get back to a round shape where the ends meet perfectly. But if you pull one end forward and the other back, the circle stays in shape and will close really well. As long as the ends meet pretty tightly, you shouldn't have to worry.

I hope this is what you were looking for, and that I described it ok -- it's hard to describe!

    Yeah,what plainmable said!
Here is a good description http://www.silverfantasy.com/attaching.html
If your working with thread or tigerstail then folding your leangth in half, wrap over jump ring and pull thru the 'u' and you'll have secured it pretty well.

I saw an article on a specific brand of jump rings that make a snap or click sound when they're closed correctly. I think it was in the most recent BeadStyle...I'll find the specific name for you. (I'm at a cybercafe cause i'm poor and can't afford a computer for 5 more months.)

    I found it! Yay!

They're called Snapeez, you can get them here www.viamurano.com. They're a bit pricey...$15 for 50...

On that subject...a couple of questions.

    1. Where can you get split rings cheap? The only place I've found to order them in any kind of quantity (that is, not individually) is from a sporting-goods company (they're meant for making fishing tackle), at about $5 for 144. Is this a decent going rate? It seems a little steep to me.

    2. I make purses with the parts held together by many little rings - jump rings don't hold well enough, and split rings do - but split rings have the problem of snagging on clothes. Is there a particular kind/brand of split ring that is less prone to snagging, or do you have a suggestion for some other kind of sturdy ring to use?

(Edit: Those Snapeez rings sound great - but boy are they pricey.)

You can get regular split rings and jumprings from any beading supply store or online store. The more common are Fire Mountain Gems and Shipwreck Beads. (There are more, but those are a few more well-known companies.) FMG has fantastic customer service, and their website is pretty easy to navigate.
