    Lip balm making--some questions

So, my latest crafty dream has been to make my own lip balm. I'm planning on using the instructions from not martha, and most of the ingredients I plan on ordering from MMS.

Sweet almond oil, however, I have found at my local little expensive grocery store with also sorts of strange foods. I wasn't sure--is it okay to use this, even though its not actually meant for cosmetics?

I have the same question about coconut oil, which I got from Whole Foods Market.

Also, whats the difference between an essential oil and just an oil? I saw
some lemon and orange oils and I was wondering if I could use them to flavor lip balms.

    Whew, a lot of questions.

    thanks:-)

The oils you find in the grocery store are fine to use. I've had good luck with sunflower oil, which is a pretty cheap alternative. The lemon and orange oils are also fine to use. You'll have to experiment, they are a lot less concentrated than essential oils, and you might end up having to substitue some of the other oils in the recipe with a portion of the lemon/orange oils. Essential oils are super-concentrated extracts of plants. You would only use a few drops in any recipe.

    Good luck!

I've made a bunch of lip balms and I tend to use stuff from the grocery store, almond and other nut oils are my favorites.
    I've purchased tubed from:

and had really great service, and you are not limited in quantities of tubes.

    clove oil

You might not want to use clove oil in large amounts... it has a bit of a numbing affect... but maybe you could use it in a "sore lip balm" or something?

i wouldn't recommend using clove oil in cosmetics. it can be irritating to the skin, and the fragrance dissipates very quickly anyways.
