    dye and embroidery

    hallo,

i have a black hoodie that i love dearly with an embroidered skull on it. the hoodie has started to fade with washing. now normally i would just dye away, but i don't know what to do about this embroidered (white) skull. does anyone have any ideas?

    thanks!

i wonder if you could put wax over it, like the technique used in batik? it might be hard to get off the embroidery though... hrm.

is it hand embroidery? or an applique-type thing? if you are an embroiderer, you could always dye it and then embroider over the dyed parts again in white...

it's an applique type thing, and although that is an awesome idea, i have never embroidered anything. :( still, if i get desperate, that may be an option......

hmmm... you might want to pop over to sublimestitching.com-- she has some embroidery patterns with skulls on them that are pretty cool-- you might be able to re-create the hoody or make a skully t-shirt and learn a new craft!

one more thought-- you know how when you tie-dye something you use a rubber band to separate parts of the shirt? maybe you could plastic-wrap over the embroidery, rubber-band it and dip-dye the rest of the hoody?

I have a tank top that I just embroidered and I love it , but I hate the color. It's a light yellow with some faded stains. I just chose this tank to practice on, but I love what I did. Do you think that tea staining would work with out ruining the floss?

What about Scotchgard sprayed only on the skull? Would that repel dye? I've never tried that, so I have no idea if it would work.

If the skull is an appliqué that's sewn on, could you remove it with a seam ripper, dye the shirt and then sew the skull back on?

Otherwise, I'd suggest just letting it fade gracefully - I'm sure it still looks cool even if it's not the blackest black.
