Binding off for the first time

I am about to bind off a scarf for the first time and I'm not sure how. Do you have a source you recommend as the most helpful? I have the stitch n bitdh books, I thought I might start there.

www.knittinghelp.com was a lifesaver for me. you can bind off in either style.

someone told me this and it seemed to do the trick!

" Here's how you bind off:
Knit or purl 2 stitches, you now have 2 stitches on your right hand needle. Take your left hand needle, use it to slip the right stitch off over the left stitch. You now have 1 stitch on your right needle. Knit one more stitch. Slip the right stitch over the left. Keep going until you are done.

I knit continental, and prefer to bind off while knitting, not purling. I feel that holding the yarn to the front gets in the way. But depending on your instructions or stitch pattern, it is sometimes to bind off while purling. "

    Hope that helps!!!

Hmmm - can i minorly hijack to ask a question about binding off?

When I bind off, I find my stitches get too tight - my knitting all gathers on that side as if I inserted an elastic. What am I doing wrong?

If you've crocheted, binding off is essentially crocheting.

Not that will help anyone, but when I figured that out it was a cool moment that finally brought the two together for me and that was exciting.

    del,

you can either of two things (or both):

    1. bind off loosely=when you pull the stitches off the left-hand needle, pull a little more yarn out. (actually, you should always bind off loosely. if you want to rip out what you've done, it will be a lot easier)

    2. use a needle one or two sizes larger for your right hand.

also, i prefer to bind off in pattern unless otherwise instructed.

i'd recommend the larger needle on the last row before binding off. especially if you're binding off with a rib stitch.

(and this is also what i recommend when starting a ribbed cuff or any ribbed item, especially a hat - you know you use a needle at least 2 sizes smaller than the rest of the garment for the ribbed section, so use the larger needle for the first row of the ribbing so it has more stretch.)

my favorite bind-off is EZ's "casting-on casting-off" from Knitting Without Tears.

it's less homely, stretchier, and never tight and binding.
