    Mini Sewing Machines

Does anybody have one? are they useful? too small? are they easy to use? good to start or better to wait and buy a big one?

thanks for the advice you can give me.

i have an $8 mini sewing machine - I definitely don't feel like it would be good for any wearable cloth item. I only use it for paper.

Alexia, that is the best use I've heard for them yet.

Many moons ago, I bought a really teeny sewing machine that was crap. I don't recall the specifics of it so much, but while working in a craft store and talking to all the other sewers who had tried these little ones, it seemed we all had the same experiences.

Big problem is tension. Huge problem is you have to feed the cloth yourself. It's better to get a relatively inexpensive basic full sized machine whether reconditioned or new than to waste money on these. IMHO.

the $40-ish ones at Jo-Ann are total pieces of shit, and mysteriously, we can't keep them in stock because they're so popular. i've never heard anything good about the mini sewing machines.

My mother got me a "tiny tailor" used from a co-worker, and I couldn't really get it to do anything I wanted at all.

I have a kenmore that I bought for 175 US on E-bay - four times as much as one of those mini ones, but it does everything short of serging, is super easy to use, and, well, just WORKS.

I think it's better to buy a good, used machine than a cheap, new machine that can't do what you want ...

i have the kenmore mini ultra, it retails at 100 dollars but is frequently on sale, I got it for 80 but i've seen it in the already opened section for 65. I like it b/c it's cute and 3/4 the size of a normal machine. It's not perfect, sometimes the tension is wonky but part of my problem was that I was not reading the manual and was threading it wrong...i was threading it as i learned in home ec, but apparently it had to be thread a different way. i'd recommend it :)
