I just got a couple of really cool kitchen dishrags from Target, really funky retro print. I'm just going to fold them in half and sew up the sides. Maybe make a handle from some felt or the spare dishrag.
I hope you post what you make, I'd love to see it![/i]

That's a fantastic idea-- I could also use the typical pillowcase but sew on flashy handles...I'm so excited , Halloween is one of my favorite holidays for all the creativity and people actually going outside their comfort zone to dress up---I will definitely post the results, whatever I do...Thanks

love the dish towel idea!
I think I actually saw this idea in Martha Stewart Halloween book:
Cut out a felt skull and cross bones (or bat, or black cat, etc) in felt and sew on canvas bag. Done! Sturdy and cheap.

I never used bags, I always had one of those plastic pumpkins. One thing I've always had in the back of my mind for when I have kids is to paint buckets or coffee cans (and add handles) with pumpkins, ghosts, or whatever Halloween thing they want. Maybe even something that goes w/ the costume.
If you wanted a bag like that you could even cut two symmetrical shapes out of felt and sew the seams together. The one thing that sticks out for me is all those baby costumes of a lady bug. You could cut out a leaf shape and turn it into a really cute bag. Then draw the details w/ a sharpie.

I think I saw a pattern once where they were made from burlap sacks, and then embroidered or cross stitched with autumn leaves, and typical halloween icons (ghosts, witches, pumpkins, yada yada yada).
We always used old pillow cases. The bad part was that your pillow case never really looked full, and was always heavy and dragging along the ground.... ah well.

I think--as I posted in my blog--that I may cut off the top of a spam can or do a doll's head hollowed out for a Tim Burton-esque appeal

Well I hate to say this, but if you're at Target anyway, you can check out the $1 section. They have some really cute ones - already made. (It's an option!)

Hee-Hee - We dressed my daughter up as a Trick-or-Treat Bag for her first Halloween!
We got an orange canvas bag from the craft store, I turned it so that the straps would go over her arms, cut holes for her legs, and then painted it with various Halloween-y things. It was such a fun costume.

I love the trick or treat bag as a costume idea! I'll have to file that one away for the next little one...
