Need help with a music CD gift!!

So I was listening to the radio this morning in the car, and got a big, fat moment of inspiration.
The daughter of one of my close friends is turning 13 in January. She calls me "Aunt" and thinks I'm absolutely the coolest of her mom's friends. So naturally I have to come through with cool stuff for her special day!
I've already gathered a bunch of little fun things for her, and am planning to make her a one-of-a-kind purse w/ matching accessories, like a make-up bag and tampon case.
Anyway, this morning I heard the Fugees version of "Killing Me Softly with His Song", which I LOVE. So I thought it would be really fun to burn a CD of remakes like that one and also burn the original versions...maybe on a separate CD, So I could burn Roberta Flack's 70's version too.
Another one I thought of was "It's My Life", remade by No Doubt w/ the original by Talk Talk, which I also really like.
So, what are some other great remakes of songs that you can think of? Please include the name of the singers/bands who did the originals and remakes!
I'll post a list of the end result later.
    Thanks everyone!

What a great idea! I guess a lot will depend on which ones she's heard. For example, didn't Hillary Duff or someone do a Go Go's song? And didn't Jessica Simpson do These Boots..." (Of course, in both of those cases, you'd rather just record the original - NOT the remake.)

One of my favorites was Cindy Lauper's rendition of Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On?" That's just a great song and I think she did it justice.

    Here are some more :
I Shot the Sheriff - Bob Marley and Eric Clapton
Personal Jesus - Depeche Mode and Johnny Cash
Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana and Tori Amos
Sweet Child O Mine - Guns & Roses and Luna
Common People - Pulp and William Shatner

    OOH!!
Thanks so much cackalackie! Those are some great examples!
Her mom, my friend, majored in music in college, and was studying opera. So there's a lot of music appreciation going on there, of all genres, which makes this an even more fun project.
I thought of some more on my 2nd drive of the day:
How Come You Don't Call Me-Prince and Alicia Keys
I'll Be There-Jacksons and Mariah Carey

And didn't I hear the Fugees AGAIN singing Killing Me Softly!! It must be Karma or something. LOL!

P.S.~didn't LeAnn Rhimes sing "How Do I Live"? Wasn't that a cover of someone else's version??

Sewlittletime, there's an entire album to help you out: Spirit of '73.

The entire album is female performers covering '70s era songs by female performers. This is the track listing:

    1. "If I can't have you" by Eve's Plum
    2. "More, more, more" by Babes in Toyland
    3. "We are family" by Ebony Vibe Everlasting
    4. "Dreams" by Letters to Cleo
    5. "Dancing barefoot" by Johnette Napolitano
    6. "Cherry bomb" by L7 with Joan Jett
    7. "Midnight at the oasis" by That Dog
    8. "Have you never been mellow" by Pet
    9. "River" by Rosanne Cash
    10. "Feelin' like makin' love" by Melissa Ferrick
    11. "Killing me softly with his song" by Cassandra Wilson
    12. "Blue" by Sarah McLachlan
    13. "It won't take long" by the Indigo Girls
    14. "The night they drove old dixie down" by Sophie B. Hawkins

If any of these covers interest you, just send a PM my way. I recommend tracks 2, 5-8, 12-14 most of all. :)
