    Gift for 21 year old

I am trying to figure out the perfect gift for a 21 year old man/boy. He is my daughters boyfriends brother. He is into computers and goes to a strict christian college... so no drink theme things. Help it is this Saturday! Ack!

    it depends...
doesn't sound like you know him super well.
maybe a (eww) gift certificate for a CD/record store?
or a crocheted box to keep small computer stuff or pens and scratchpaper in...

    Special

The thing is I want the gift to be meaningful. Something that you will have for a while. Something special. I don't know. His MOM will care more then him, but that is important too.

21 year old guys are indeed difficult to buy for! I'd suggest doing something with pictures of family, friends, etc so that it will mean something to him. you could do a box or something so it would also be functional.

There's not many meaningful gifts you can give a 21 year old male that you do not know very well.

I suggest a book (although could be loaded if he is a strict Christian) or second the gift certificate. Those are really the best things for someone you don't know well.

I got my 20-year-old baby brother a remote-controlled fart machine for Christmas, and that was pretty meaningful to him ... but maybe not what you're going for?

Some of the things my little brothers (20 and 22 years old) like that could be neutral and meaningful include:

    - nice button-down shirts
    - a nice bottle of cologne (they are OBSESSED with the way they smell; they like Clinique Happy for Men and Old Spice, both of which I find stinky!)
    - classic movies (tho this could be hard if you don't know him well and/or depending on how strict a Christian he is)

I also think the gift certificate idea is a good one, but I hope that helps if you really don't want to go the gift certificate route.

If you have time and want to make something..

Those 70s record bowls are pretty hip.
Knit some gloves or mittens--or anything from knitty's "man" issue.
A CD shelf (I don't know how you'd go about making one, maybe buying would be better!)

Blank CD-Rs are great, we computer nerds can always use more of those!

Depending on where he lives, and his ability to return stuff...

Maybe get him something from a Christian store? Maybe a Christian compilation CD of the best hits of the year?

Maybe put together a basket with a cd or t-shirt, a beer mug filled with candy, and a scratcher lottery ticket.

Even if you don't go that route, a gift card to a Christian bookstore would prove handy to him if he needs to buy certain religious books for classes (amazon doesn't have a lot of the limited publication type books).

You could get him a gift cert or sweatshirt from his college bookstore.

A good theology type book with a pretty binding?

Something like a C.S. Lewis book (more along the lines of Surprised by Joy than Narnia, of course :) ) or St. Augustine's Confessions, perhaps?

My favourite religious book I've read recently was Saint Francis of Assisi by G.K. Chesterton. If he's into poetry you could get him some George Herbert or John Donne. (Be careful not to get Donne's naughty poems, though. He had some interesting pastimes for a minister. ;) )

I've always found books to be good gifts for male friends from religious school. However, I do agree with the people who say that buying something for someone you don't know very well is a bit risky. If he's an impoverished student, like a good many of us are, a gift certificate or something of the like would probably be appreciated.
