    fabric flowers: need ideas

I want to make some flowers for tutu embellishments out of scraps of heavy velvet, silks, etc. I don't want the same old ribbon roses! These should be big - 4 to 6 inches across - and durable. Any ideas? I found a pattern with instructions for millinary techniques, but I can't afford it...

This is just an idea . . . I remember seeing a beautiful wreath in Martha Stewart Living, which was made with leaves embossed onto velvet. A flower made in a similar way might be very pretty.
