sharpie on tshirt -- stop the bleeding!

    Hiya,

I've recently gotten a bit excited about quick and dirty tshirt modification with sharpie markers. I've noticed some marker colors tend to bleed when you run the tshirt through any washing situation (machine or hand) while other colors stay firm. Is there any good fixative technique to make sure the ink doesn't bleed or show up where you didn't originally put it? Or should I just make some kind of sampler to watch what the colors do and avoid the ones that are rambunctious? I sincerely apologize if this is a totally idiotic question.

Thanks in advance, you smart crafty types!
    andrea

not much you can do to stop the bleeding - it's the nature of the fabric, I suppose, to suck up liquid :)

Try ironing the fabric where you drew before you throw it in the wash. Heat-setting helps some inks from bleeding.

You may want to try fabric pens - they're made specifically for drawing on fabrics.

but testing the markers on swatches should help you figure out how things turn out before you ruin a good shirt ;)

    have fun!

Have you tried washing the shirts in a bit of vinegar?? well, diluted vinegar that it. maybe about a 1/2 cup in the washer. I know that to make rit dye stay that you wash the final product in vinegar.

    try hairspray as a base...

    Hi,
If you are still interested, the Oct.2006 issue of WIRED magazine had a blip about preventing blurry Sharpie marks on cloth. It said to coat the fabric with hairspray before drawing on it. This causes the surface to become " hard" and eaiser to write on. Also, the hairspray fills any gaps between the fibers and prevent smears. I do not know if it will help with keeping the pigments bright after washing but, it is worth a try.

there is a product called Raycafix (the spelling might be a bit dodgy) that I get at a local dye shop called G&S Dyes here in Toronto. It helps to set the dye to the material and prevent bleeding.
