    Felted wool?

Over the summer I was vacationing in Ohio and went to a quilt store where they had "felted wool" items -- at least I think that's what they were called. They had adorable purses and wall hangings. I live in Miami. FL and can't find anyone who teaches these classes. Does anyone know where I could find a kit online to try and learn how to do this? I was told there's no machine sewing involved which is perfect since I've tried and just can't get it(!). Many thanks for your help!

Was it NEEDLE felted wool? I've seen it done on That's Clever and I've been interested in trying it myself. I think you just need some wool roving and a special felting needle that has little barbs in it.

Let me see if I can find some links for you...

Hhhhmmmm, needle felted wool.....not sure. Do you mean do you sew it with a needle? If so, then yes. I've gone to a number of quilt stores in Miami /So Fla and none of them teach it because it's a "North craft." Many thanks in advance for your help! Have a great weekend!

it's not sewn with a needle, you use a special needle to make the felt.

did the pieces you saw look like commercial felt, with no grain, or did they look like thick, fuzzy fabric? if it looked like there was underlying knit or woven fabric, then they were probably fulled and sewn. if they looked more like commercial felt or were seamless, they were probably wet-felted.

there are a few different types of felting, so it is hard to say without more information.

The items I saw in Ohio looked like the pieces of felt were appliqued. Does that help? Thanks for your patience (sewing/fabric is foreign to me!) and help y'all! I really want to learn how to do this. =)
