    Cardboard in purses

I want to make a purse/ tote that is sturdy. I've seen many purses in store that are stiff (they must have cardboard in them). I really want to make one for myself, but am unsure of exactly how they get the cardboard in there and make it look so good. Does anyone know how this is done of know of a book or other source that would help me out? I've been searching online, but have only been able to find information on making soft cloth purses.

    Thanks!

You could use Timtex. It's a thick sort of interfacing that you sew right in and it makes bags sturdy and helps them hold their shape. I haven't tried it yet (it's on my list of things to try), but I have seen bags that have it inside and they look really nice. You can probably find some at a local fabric store. Let us know how it goes!

I use a cardboard insert (or sometimes a plastic mesh that is found in the embroidery aisle) in my smaller handbags. I do not sew it in, but it is held in place by the purse feet. When you turn the bag after sewing the inside/outside together, you just need to make sure it stays straight and doesn't bend. I haven't had a problem with this. Also, if you will be selling or giving any bags away with this, be sure to let the recipient know about the insert in the event they have the bag cleaned.

i worked at a dry cleaner through college, and i'll tell you that every handbag we washed with cardboard in it was ruined. so i would use something waterproof.
