art teacher+california public school=no budget (junk wanted)

    Hello all!

I am an art teacher and I thought I would put a message out in case any of you have any old crafty or art stuff that you dont need anymore. If your like me you collect tons of junk and store it for that perfect project.

Im looking for any of the following:
magazines (any type, we use the pics obviously)
scraps of fabric, ribbon, string, thread, needles
matt board scraps, paper of all types
    silk screen frames
    manequins or old dressmaking forms
still life objects (pretty much anything unique)
easels for paining and displaying work
    canvases (used or unused)

Anything would be greatly appreciated--sometimes people would be donating these things anyway so it cant hurt to ask, right?

    Laurel

I'm sure I have some things I could part with. I think I have some paper scraps, catalogs and other miscellaneous art supplies I could send your way. Let me know the details and I'll look through my things. Good luck!

Oh my, I have TONS of magazines, fabric scraps, etc., and I'm hoping to get rid of most of it, since I'm moving. But I'm clear across the country!

You might want to check to see if there's a freecycle group in your area. I see postings for free magazines, and other artsy things in my local groups.

I just did a quick search and if the Simi Valley (as google suggested), is near LA, here's a freecycle group for you to check out:

    http://groups.yahoo.com/group/lafreecycle

The NJ-area freecycle pages are my favorites next to getcrafty.com! Great for finding stuff and finding new homes for your stuff!

    Best wishes -
    Chrissy

Laurel - for free paper, check newpapers for ends of rolls and check printing presses for "off cuts".

I live in Camarillo/Ventura and have old magazines or other art supplies that I could look for. Since I am so close you should email me at: newton@bust.com

i don't have any supplies to spare as i teach art classes myself, but here's an idea i can share...

i just taught my first kid's printmaking class last weekend, and we used recycled stryrofoam meat and produce trays (ran through a dishwasher to sterilize) to make relief prints. styro take-out boxes would work well, too.

pre-cut some newsprint (love the idea of getting end rolls from your local newspaper). cut the styro into flat pieces (a little smaller than the paper), and draw design on with a pencil, keeping in mind that design will print out in reverse...so any writing needs to be done backwards. roll on some waterbased ink or acrylic paint, lay a piece of newsprint over it, and rub back of paper with a wooden spoon. lift paper off carefully and voila! a print.

in the class i taught there were mostly 5-8 year olds, but an adult woman took it too, and loved it.
