Post Subject: Submission call for Knit Graffiti Book
Submission Call – Knit Graffiti Book
In the hands of guerrilla street artists, yarn graffiti snakes around telephone posts, through barbed wire fences, and over abandoned cars. Originally created by a crew in Texas, knit graffiti has become an international movement embraced by crafters of all ages and nationalities. Yarn Bombing: The Art of Knit Graffiti is a book about the history of yarn graffiti in urban spaces and future plans for world yarn domination, and will teach knitters how they can join the revolution.
Are you a knitter or crochetier? Do you design (or want to design) unusual pieces of street art out of yarn?
If so, you should design a pattern for Yarn Bombing: The Art of Knit Graffiti, to be published by Arsenal Pulp Press in fall 2009.
A DIY guide to the art of yarn graffiti and a history of hand-crafted textile street art, Yarn-Bombing will feature patterns such as street-smart disguises, useful wearable tools like gloves and tool belts, street art such as knit car cozies, bike covers and headlight toques, and outdoor installations such as crochet shawls for leafy trees. The sky’s the limit as long as it’s knit or crocheted! Projects should be fun, colorful and a little bit wacky.
Designers are asked to submit a sketch and detailed description of their project, along with a brief bio, by the submission deadline of May 30, 2008.
There is no entry fee, and you are encouraged to submit multiple designs. Please include your complete contact information (email and mailing addresses) with your submission. Hard-copy submissions will not be returned unless an SASE or International Mailing Coupon is provided.
Digital sketches (under 2MB) can be emailed to mandy@yarnbombing.com, or hard copy sketches can be mailed to:
Leanne Prain
203-884 Bute Street
Vancouver, BC
Canada V6E 1Y5
You will be notified via email if your design has been selected for publication. Selected designs will need to be knit or crocheted by their designers over the months of June-August, and mailed to the publisher for photography and editing by August 30, 2008. Patterns and any accompanying diagrams must be mailed to mandy@yarnbombing.com by the same date. Designers who are chosen to participate will receive the yarn necessary to complete their project, an honorarium, a free copy of the book, and credit for taking part in the book.
For more information, please visit Arsenal Pulp Press (arsenalpulp.com) or the Yarn Bombing Blog (yarnbombing.com).
If you have any questions or concerns regarding submissions, please contact Leanne (leanne@yarnbombing.com) or Mandy (mandy@yarnbombing.com)

Hi, I'm the Boutique Director for n.i.c.e. boutique in Salt Lake City, Utah. We are located inside The Women's Art Center. Post Subject: craft workshop Sun, Aug 1st @ Ladyfest Bay Area (California)
i'm sure most of you know that this weekend is the second Ladyfest Bay Area. I taught a workshop in 2002 at the previous Ladyfest on using recycled materials in art to create shrines. This year, we are again trying to help people see alternative paths to art - being creative without an art-school budget. Our prototype projects are books made out of matchbooks, tins, and other ordinary objects reframed as narrative containers.
i hope some of you can make it to the workshop! i *think* it is a $3-5 sliding scale charge. Ladyfest is a fundraiser for two really important local women's art groups. See http://www.ladyfestbayarea.org/beneficiaries.html for details.
creating without consuming will be 1:45 p.m. - 3:15 p.m. on sunday, august 1st. it will be held at everrett middle school, at 450 church st. i suggest arriving at 1:30 to get your ticket and get settled before the workshop starts. since we only have 90 minutes, we have to start right away! http://www.ladyfestbayarea.org/venues.html
also, i will be bringing some scissors, glues, etc, but if you have scissors to bring with you, it will make your craft time even more enjoyable!
for your other crafty interests, there is DIY Beginner Crochet, from 12-1:30 on sunday, august 1st.

The Smithsonian American Art Museum just launched the creative initiative Ghosts of a Chance. All objects that are received will be on display in the museum on October 25, and selected ones will even be entered temporarily into the online collection! The deadlines for each artifact are not critical -- as long as we get everything by the week before October 25 we''ll be happy!
Please see http://www.ghostsofachance.com for details of the different artifacts and for information about the initiative in general. Contact me if you have any questions.

Currently living in Sydney Australia and I am flying into Denver Colorado next week to visit relatives in Granby. Does anyone know of any good altered art or stamp stores to vist in the Granby or Denver area.
I have heard of great stores in Fort Collins but that is too far away from where I will be staying.
I am looking for stamps, ink, collage material etc for altered art projects.

Does anyone here know about the anti-Bele Chere festival in Asheville? I've never been, but from what I hear Green Eggs & Jam (a music store on Lexington ave) has a ton of local indie/punk bands play. I was wondering if this anti-fest also included craft vendors. Does anyone know?
I think it'd be great to set up a table and sell affordable art/crafts since so much of the art at Bele Chere is inaccessible to many of the people living in Asheville.
Thanks for any suggestions!

Jessica and I have recently launched the online incarnation of Miss Chief Productions. Here is the latest blurb of what we are all about:
Erin Wommack and Jessica Manack fine-tuned their collecting and collaging skills as college roommates in Roanoke, VA. Misschiefshop.com is the new showcase for their creations, from buttons to stationery to knits, and a rotating rack of thrift-store gems. Miss Chief's offerings include accessories and utilitarian items created from vintage finds, often one-of-a-kind...and affordable! Irreverent and irresistible, they bridge the gap between fine art and the art of the everyday.
Please check it out! We are putting the finishing touches on the website and are adding more lovely things every day. Ka-pow! Any suggestions would be helpful as well!
best, erin

hello all! i just began a blog!
http://octavineillustration.blogspot.com
here's a bit about me:
Welcome to Octavine Illustration! My goal is to construct a world of retro images based on the classic Art Deco form.
I garner inspiration from the sensuous lines of Deco haute couture, classic silhouettes of sleek sophistication. Imagine the ‘30s era of Hollywood beauty queens, the Chrysler Building and the Duesenberg. Style and craftsmanship reigned supreme, nurturing the creation of a product solely for its beauty. That is Octavine Illustration.
With gouache as my medium, I craft fonts and images which are completely hand-wrought. My images are then transferred to silk-screens to produce the bold colors you see in my art on cloth or paper. I do not use digital technology to alter my images in any way. As a result, my creativity is not bound by a machine.

like Baka Poi / Quien? split zine between my pals Katy in France and Madoka in Japan. Interviews with Math and Physics Club, Cocosuma, the Concretes and more. There is also a section where Katy and Madoka write their "firsts and lasts" - like records bought, bands seen, etc. Fun read! Some in French, most in English.
My friend Paul in the UK does a zine called Homelovin'. This is one of my favorite zines and it is he has live reviews, articles about art, and stories.
Have you seen Catch that Beat? It was made by Yayoi in Tokyo. The issue I have availble is the "Herstory Issue" and has interviews and articles on Darren Hanlon, Nikki McClure, Sleater-Kinney, the Lucksmiths, Le Tigre, Lois Maffeo and much more. This zine is mostly written in Japanese, but is so wonderful, you will want it for the art and the parts you can read!
All waiting for you here!

Post Subject: Maw is alive and well in the Southwest!
Ok
so here I am a little ol country girl from Alaska transplanted in the great state of Arizona! Phoenix to be exact. CAN YOU SAY CULTURE SHOCK!
Now don't get me wrong I have lived here for awhile the shock has just lasted that long.
However I find Arizona captivating with lots of places to rock hound for great little treasures. I get to go home every year so I have the best of both worlds.
Anyway they call me maw! when I was younger little mama. Why you ask, because I am always mothering something or someone.
I love beads all beads and seed bead work is my favorite. I love life and living life. My cup is always 1/2 full.
I love handcrafted items and I own a lot of handcrafted goods and art. I just find it so spiritual and more homey to be surrounded by items made with love and care.
Forget those dollar stores give me something of quality! give me homemade!
I love to make cards, garden, do jewelry work, hike, ride motorcycles and I love art, music and my pets. In fact I can't think of to many things I don't like or can't find some good it.
I look forward to sharing with you all

Post Subject: Trashion Trunk Show at Etsy Labs - July 27th
I’m a member of the Etsy Trashion Team. We're a group of over 70 artists from around the world who specialize in turning trash into treasure. The Etsy Trashion Team is about visualizing beauty in unconventional objects and materials. We fabricate art, jewelry, fashion and objects for the home from used, thrown-out & found elements. For us, trashion is a philosophy and an ethic. It encompasses environmentalism and innovation, and respects the human creative and healing potential.
We JUST launched a group Etsy shop, located at EtsyTrashion.etsy.com. Products from all of our members will be available for purchase there. A full list of members' shops will also be available there in the profile section soon.
On Friday, July 27th, we will be hosting a trunk show at the Etsy Labs in Brooklyn NYC. (325 Gold Street, Brooklyn NYC. A/C/F to Jay St * B/M/Q/R to Dekalb)
We'll have recycled art, jewelry, clothing, home décor & more for sale, plus there will be trashion-themed films, make-your-own trashion activities and refreshments.
The trunk show is FREE and open to all ages, plus the first 25 people through the door will receive a FREE trashion team gift bag. Attendees are requested to RSVP via email at rsvp@etsy.com.
For more info on the group, our Etsy shop and our trunk show is available at: http://www.etsytrashion.com
We’d really appreciate anything to help us get the word out. If you live in NYC and want some fliers to pass out, there's a copy of it here that you can print out: http://www.flickr.com/photos/etsylabs/544716216
Thanks! Hope to see you there, I'm definitely looking forward to it!

Post Subject: Craftland Craft Show!
Just wanted to spread the word about the Craftland craft show to all of the crafty folk on get crafty. Check it out!
Craftland is back for its third glittery year!
Applications are now being accepted for the 3rd Annual Craftland, a contemporary craft show in Providence, Rhode Island featuring an eclectic assortment of fine crafts and cutting-edge, quirky handmade items. Proceeds from Craftland benefit New Urban Arts www.newurbanarts.org , a free art studio program for Providence high school students. Craftland operates for five weeks in November and December at a retail space in Providence, Rhode Island and sells unique and unusual handmade items on consignment. Artist need not be present to sell their work. Artists drop off or ship their work to Craftland and Craftland displays and sells the work – like a consignment store or gallery. Artists receive 60% of the retail price on items sold, 30% goes to the cost of running the show, and 10% goes to New Urban Arts.
To download a Craftland Artists Application which includes all of the nitty gritty details please visit www.craftlandshow.com
Applications are due by September 10, 2004 POSTMARK DEADLINE
Most of the artists participating in Craftland live in New England, but we also accept work from artists throughout the United States. To keep Craftland fresh and irresistible, we seek a range of people to participate. Whether you have participated in craft shows before, are an art school student or have made nifty things but never sold them, we want to hear from you! Over 100 local and far away artists participated in Craftland 2003 -- teenagers to grandmothers, professionals to first-timers. We encourage artists to view Craftland as an opportunity for whimsical craft exploration. Some artists have created limited-edition new work exclusively for Craftland, and others have experimented with techniques outside their usual work (painters who made puppets, jewelers who made holiday ornaments, and chefs who made magnets). Other artists sell the prints, jewelry or books they produce year-round.
Craftland is about the love of making things, the pleasure of having one's own creative practice and the celebration of all things crafty. And it supports a great cause! Please share this information with anyone you know who might be interested in participating this year.
Thanks and Get Crafty!

About the organizations:
The Goose Hollow Shelter
The Goose Hollow Family Shelter is a temporary emergency shelter for homeless families in the Portland metropolitan area. They take in anyone who has a child under the age of 18, as well as pregnant women. The shelter currently operates from November to May and is hoping to one day have the resources to stay open year round. In the evenings, they have “kid time” where volunteers lead the kids in various activities, one of which is crafting.
p:ear
http://www.pearmentor.org/
p:ear builds positive relationships with homeless and transitional youth through education, art and recreation to affirm personal worth and create more meaningful and healthier lives.
Community Action Organization
http://www.communityaction4u.org/
Community Action exists to ensure that low-income families have a place to turn for help as they strive to get back on their feet and achieve a better life. They offer the following services: A Kid’s Domain: Before and after school care, Early Head Start/Head Start Preschool, Energy and Emergency Services, Homeless and Housing Services, Opening Doors: Maternity outreach and pregnancy support.
Buckman SUN School
http://www.sunschools.org
http://www.buckmansite.teacherhosting.com
Buckman Arts Magnet Elementary School is one of the community schools serviced by the SUN Program (Schools Uniting Neighborhoods). The mission of the SUN program is to improve the lives of children, their families and the community through partnering with local school communities to extend the school day with a variety of classes and develop schools as “community centers” in their neighborhoods. We are specifically asking for donations for their Winter Craft & Gift-making Night on Wednesday December 15th at Buckman Elementary School. Families are invited to return to school in the evening and create unique handmade gifts for the holidays with the help of parent volulteers and local artists (including the girls of Super Crafty!)
One more organization collecting craft supplies and handmade gifts is La Casa de las Madres, a San Francisco-based group that offers emergency services to women and their children escaping domestic violence.
They have women of all ages there, and children from newborn to age 18, so items of all sizes and colors would be welcome. They would take blankets, scarves, hats, mittens, gloves - all the standard handmade stuff. If you do not knit or crochet, you are welcome to sew any donations. Machine washable is good, so is warm wool, but they are not picky and would take anything. You are welcome to wrap stuff if you want, but please put a tag on the outside indicating what is inside, and the size, etc., and attaching a tag indicating the fabric content, care instructions, and maybe a little pick-me-up message would be wonderful.
They are also looking for donations of art and craft supplies - fabric, yarn, needles, paper, crayons, hooks, glue, markers, etc. NO magazines, they already have plenty.
http://www.lacasa.org/index.html
http://www.lacasa.org/wish_list.html
About La Casa: La Casa de las Madres offers emergency residential shelter to battered women and their children while providing counseling, family-based services and referrals. Our Emergency Crisis Shelter has the capacity to shelter and support 35 women and children per night. La Casa's downtown San Francisco office houses our two 24-hour Crisis Phone Lines, a Drop-In Counseling Center, the Teen Intervention & Prevention Program, and the Community Education & Outreach Program. All services are offered free-of-charge in English and Spanish.
Please send donations directly to the shelter by December 17:
La Casa de las Madres
1850 Mission Street, Suite B
San Francisco, CA 94103
PDX Super Crafty won’t be delivering these gifts, we’re just handling donations for the Portland organizations! Thanks for your generosity this holiday season!

No offense, but they're just EVERYWHERE here and I'm dying for some change!). Any girls from 21-30 who would like to do some crafts and maybe have a couple drinks email me @ starlingskyy21@yahoo.com. Thanks!

Post Subject: getting permission for copyright-trademark- logos
I'm contacting the business and organizations that hold the rights (for certain artwork and logos) to ask for permission to reproduce their designs for the purpose of selling my crafts. I've only had one decline, the others have not responded.
I'm wondering if anyone else has received permission in this way?
Am I wasting my precious crafting time?
I could design my own faux vintage art...but they wouldn't be reproductions, which is the market I'm tyring to tap into!

New here as well as Etsy (less than a month). Can't tell you how thrilled I am to be paid by people for my own creations. Isn't it the most awesome pat on the back you can get?!
Anyway, I would like to introduce myself. I specialize in handmade purses (especially reversible ones!), beaded bookthongs, and original art. I especially love linoleum block printing which I feature on notecards and even on my purses.

not so much an 'ad' as a peeve of mine that 'crafts' aren't as well represented in art exhibitions - so when I learn of a good exhibit devoted to crafts I do like to let people know. For those in the Chicago area there is a large exhibit devoted to African pottery featuring objects from across the continent. It's called From Hearth to Altar and runs until February.
I'll include a link with more info and some images (about 1/2 way down the page).

Thanks for the posting, lumberjack lolita! I want everyone to know that you're also teaching a free Relief Printing class for kids at Revolution Gallery in Issaquah, WA on Aug. 7th at 11am.
We also have a Mosaic Basics class (also free) Aug. 15th at 1pm and an Intro. to Mosaics class (alas, we must charge for this one) Sept. 11th at 11am.
I must confess to being the owner (as well as an artist) of said gallery...
However, with our talented local artists and our great recycled art, our aim is to give local artists a forum for sharing their talents.

Being a graphic designer, I'm always looking for ways to cover up my walls. I recently found what are called "test prints" --they are screenprints that are used repeatedly to test color, etc. They use the test print for different posters so you get this fabulous, one-of-a-kind work of art!
I'm trying to find resources for them, since currently the website that I really like doesn't have any for sale (they're all sold out!)
here's the website I found:

I''d definitely get bonus points if I could find an inexpensive but tasty Indian or Mediterranean restaurant. We''re open to all of forms of delicious foods if you have other local favorites you can suggest.
Thanks in advance for any tips you have for us.

Some of them are so cute! I'm really excited about the turnout so far. I figured out yesterday that this is actually 4 art projects rolled into 1. First, I make the actual Cletus, second, people take photographs of him, third, i edit the photographs into postcards, and fourth, i compile them into this project.
I'm so proud that something I made is traveling all over the place. It is such a neat feeling!
Anyone can vote for their favorites, you do not have to be a member of the community.

In August I'll move from Belgium to Lake Charles (or in the neighborhood, don't know exactly yet). My guy will work there, but I won't. So I will have plenty of time to practice a lot of crafts! ;-)
I'm very interested in ceramics.
I just finished an Art School in evening classes (7 years). So, I'm a big AMATEUR and would like to continue "turning" (don't know exactly how you call it in English, sorry). It won't be possible to ship all my stuff (because $$$), so that's why I'm looking for interesting tips in Louisiana, like:
where are the good craft shops? the training possibilities? nice people to meet (around crafts)? where are some crafty resources?
I hope someone can help me! ;-)

Post Subject: Question on a new art material...
I didn't know where else to post this! This seemed to be the most fitting category......
Well...I was looking through the Dick Blick art supplies catalog the other day when I noticed clayboard. The catalog explained that it is made by putting a layer of india ink over top the board and can be used for etching and painted over with acrylic, watercolor, etc. Has anyone used clayboard before? Are there any techniques you can suggest? I've never heard of this before, and I really want to try it out. If anyone has used this before does anyone have pictures of what they've done on clayboard? {Just for curiosity sake, to get idea's going, etc.}
P.S> This is the link to clayboard on dickblick.com for anyone who has never heard of it before: http://www.dickblick.com/zz149/15/

Post Subject: Pua range exclusive to Portsifika Gallery....
Tomorrow the Portsifika Gallery is opening in Port Chalmers, Dunedin, New Zealand - it is an idea envisioned and made a reality by a good friend of mine Angela Cook who is aiming to showcase Maori and Pacific Island art made here in New Zealand by New Zealanders.
I am involved in this because Angela invited me to make several pieces to feature as permanent fixtures available for purchase exclusively from Portsifika - accordingly I have invented Pua a sort of subsidiary of Ami-Ana - the brand name I currently use. Pua is the samoan name for a flower often used in leis in the islands and very similar (but smaller) than the hibiscus.
My thoughts in naming this range Pua was to have something like an icon that represented the pacific and my cultural heritage - what better symbol than a flower?
Hope all goes well!
Ana
