Well, depending on how long you want to sit in the car... I am in Louisville, Kentucky.
Time sensitive: the St. James Court Art Fair is the first weekend in October. One of the best art shows in the country - I always leave inspired.
Anytime, Louisville (who knew?) is a great spot to check out art glass. Lots of galleries and shops and workshops (should you want to try it) around town.
The Mellwood Arts Center is this fantastic old factory that has been turned into artist studios, performance space, galleries and shops.
Many of the great boutiques and restaurants and galleries are conveniently clumped together, for easy walking and exploring. (Louisville is actually a fantastic restaurant town) Ask anyone to direct you to the Highlands, Frankfort Avenue or Market Street downtown - it's the South, we love to be helpful.
And should you feel like spending a bit more time on I-75, as a former Michigander, I highly recommend the Ann Arbor Art Fair, Royal Oak and Ferndale almost anytime (Detroit suburbs - google Handmade Detroit for local events). And if you can make it that far, northern Michigan has some amazing little lakeshore towns to shop and explore in the summer.
