Post Subject: Southern Fried Art Collective
Hello all!
This is Jennifer of Lab Seven & the Southeastern Swag Market. If anyone's in the VA or NC areas, you might want to check out an art collective I'm trying to form. As of yet I don't have a website b/c I'm html-ly challenged, but there is a message board set up here: http://sfriedart.proboards75.com/ and a myspace group here (with a little more activity:) http://groups.myspace.com/southernfriedart.
Our first art show runs this weekend & I'm pretty excited about it, but I'd love to have people in from out of town on the next show!

Post Subject: atlanta craft show anyone?
this weekend i am going to "big angel blow out" in atlanta , it is like a seasonal art show..they also have one in the spring that i went to that was really cool. i am looking forward to it, they will have lots of artsy angels and christmas things to buy.
with all this crafty chirstmas inspiration i really want to have more craft-y shows in atlanta. a while back there was a post about starting somthing like taht but nothing really happened. if anyone is interesteed i think it'd be cool to have a monthly, or bi-monthly depending, craft/antique gathering somewhere to sell and trade, and maybe even make it more festival-like with bands playing and such. i have no idea where this would take place, the blig angel blow outi was talking about before is just in the yard of someones house, a big yard..but still. i think taht is a good idea just so there isnt the hassle of renting a place, permits (or atleast not as many?) and that sort of junk. also, if it was help at a house or someone's property could we sell food and not have to buy a food/drink permit? i think after the hollidays wouldbe a good time to start, but still if you live in atlanta and want to help or just think its a good idea and think people would come, comment and we will see.

Hi everyone, I am organizing an art show the will be up during March at the co-op gallery I show at and I am currently seeking submissions. Please read on for more info.

Cut & Paste is a show celebrating art forms that are often dismissed because of their craft element or that are unfamiliar to the general public. Cut & Paste is open to artist trading cards (ATCs), artist cards editions and
originals (ACEOs), mail art, zines with a strong art or design focus,
collages, assemblage, Cornell boxes, altered books, journals, handmade
books, book arts, and any other two- or three-dimensional art form that is
true to the spirit of "cut and paste".
All submissions due by February 11, 2007

Post Subject: One More Wedding!
It's sorta like quittin' a job.....
My last official Sundance Entertainment wedding is this Saturday. Then I am done providing DJ services for weddings, except for helping out friends and relatives (even that is not a good idea!) and maybe a few exceptions for unique weddings.
I originally stopped booking for 2004 weddings last August when it was a strong possibility we would be moving to Miami. When November hit, I was exhausted from doing weddings every single weekend and travelling all over Indiana and Michigan. It's been hard turning away business, as I get calls and emails every day from brides and grooms (Today, I had 5 calls before noon and as many emails!). I could use the money, but I must stick with my plan for moving on....
What am I moving on to? I've been developing an interactive entertainment show for preschool and elementary children and their families. I've been studying Improv for the last year and I want to incorporate that style with music and themes to create a one-of-a-kind show. Oh yeah, and throw in some educational bits so the kids learn something and the schools are willing to pay a little more than your average jukebox sock hop DJ! *wink*
This is totally different for me compared to weddings, because my niche with weddings was that I was that I provided totally elegant (non-cheesy!) DJ services. I attracted brides and grooms who were scared of having a DJ doing interactive "crap" or say stupid stuff on the microphone.
My new direction will also allow me to have most weekends free to do trunk and arts/crafts shows. I cannot tell you how painful it was last year to be draggin' my SUV full of speakers, music and CD players out of town to a wedding and pass signs for a big art show! Now I can go! :) I also thought about offering my entertainment show for the shows that have children's activity tents. Give me a way to perhaps sneak past jury requirements someday. LOL

don't know what timeframe your class is covering, but i sculpted and painted a sculpey fetish for an assignment when we were covering pre-historical art. i thought it was really simple, but the teacher was super-impressed and asked me to submit the piece for the end-of-the-semester art show.

Creative blocks are like writers block. They exist in your mind, but you reinforce them by worrying about them.
Don't think, just do... Start doing something, anything, it doesn't have to be good crafting, just headed that way. Maybe replace the buttons on something, or glaze the lightswitch covers, or make muffins with odd bits on the pantry shelf. Break the inertia.
For deeper funk, go visit a museum or to an art show, even a small gallery can help. I also like woods or beach walks, or anywhere to observe nature.

Post Subject: share your ghost story!!
it's that time of year. all day today while i was painted stuff for our day of the dead art show this weekend, i tuned into the travel channel and watched their entire haunted line up.
do you have a ghost story? i do :-(
when i had my son, i had to go to emergency, i had undiagnosed toxemia. i had a seizure and had to get an emergency c-section. it was in the old wing of a very old hosptial in phoenix. from one second to the next i had shots and tubes going in every where and it was very traumatic. later, after it was all over i was moved to a room where i was heavily sedated because i had been in so much pain.
in the middle of my deep slumber, all of a sudden i felt someone smack me in the face really hard with a pillow. i jumped up out of bed and screamed - first from fright and then from pain because of the fresh c-section wound. i yelled at my husband (who was sleeping in the chair next to my bed) "why did you do that? you hit me with the pillow!" he was like, "why would i do that to you? i love you!" he began to cry with me. we heard weird wailing sounds of people crying. we couldn't tell if they were real people or ghosts. all the lights were off because it was in the middle of the night, all i could was his silouette. we decided no matter what, we wanted to get the heck out of there! we were extremely freaked out!!
right then the door busted open and the lights came on. it was the nurses wheeling in my 4 lb baby boy who was crying because he was starving. we named him DeAngelo (the angel) because at that moment everything was ok.
so i thought...
several years later we moved into a house that used to be a way station for the homeless and was since renovated into a nice home. everytime i'd fall into a deep sleep whenever i was extremely exhausted this thing would hit me in the face, just like when i was in the hospital. sometimes it was worse! i'd feel it pick me up by my feet and lift me upside down and spin me around, pull me to the ceiling or once even drag me through the hallway. it wasn't my body, but my spirit. i would see patrick sleeping on the bed and i was trying so hard to hard to call him to wake him or grab hime to get him to help me but i couldnt reach him. the only way i could get it to let me go was to yell at it in my mind, like "NO!" and fight until i was free from its grip...
it got to the point where i was terrifed to go to sleep because it was happening every night! one night patrick hel dby my shoulders and told me to go to bed like a warrior - vibe up, take control of my energy and put up my spiritual, sacred force field. it sounds so goofy but thats what i did! i summoned my aztec warrior angels to protect me and my family. every night now i don't fall alseep without giving thanks and asking to be protected and i send out a strong Kill Bill warning.
i think something must have latched on to me from the hospital and returned when we were living at that house. it's gone now though, all is good!

Post Subject: styrofoam + glitter + glue?
my beau and i are working on a piece for an art show... it's going to involve styrofoam spheres covered in glitter (entirely). we figured using some kind of glue would be best, but neither of us have really worked w/ styrofoam. what kind of glue works best with stryofoam, hopefully something that glitter will want to stick to! any suggestions would be great!

Post Subject: Re: Any proffessionals in "the arts" on this board
Reading your post made me feel 10 times better! It honestly did. Sometimes I try to describe my situation and some people say "well, why don't you do this this and this?" without realizing there are other mitigating circumstances. Sometimes I feel like there is a set path people think you should follow, and my family life and emotional life have caused quite a few bumps... I don't mean to infer that I'm ungrateful to everyone else that has posted.
My parents claimed me up until this previous September, so this upcoming Sept. I'm going tfile as independent. I'm going to the college near here{ Stockton} that offers Visual Communications and talk with some people. {Which should be easy because I'm going to my friends senior art show there tomorrow.
They will not fill out financial aid forms. I live with my signifigant other,etc,etc. So getting financial aid and just living on campus isn't really an option.}
Any more advice????
This happened to me 15 years ago. . .I think you can petition for an exemption from having your parents fill out their portion. I could be wrong. That is based on whether or not they claim you on their taxes. I ended up getting my mom to just SIGN the forms. This was right before the FAF, so a much longer form. She ended up writing all over the form about how she was not a "displaced homemaker," and a bunch of other stuff. You know, you're not supposed to go outside those little boxes and if only she'd filled out her portion in the first place!! So there was white-out all over my form.
My home-scenario was all messed up too!
I say try your financial aid counselor. Meet with her/him and find out your options in light of your situation. I do believe it is possible for you. If I could do the financial aid thing, believe me, anyone can! And although it is a hard and will make you cry (I promise!) you will learn so much from dealing with the beaurocracy.

i have a bfa in illustration. you really need to have good professors and classes where you're drawing ALL the time in order to be a successful illustrator. i see that you live in new jersey - why not look into a school like f.i.t. for part-time classes? it is a state school, so you won't have to pay as much, although since you don't live in new york you'll be paying more than if you lived in the city. i went to pratt, so if i can hook you up with anyone there to talk to, let me know.
i went to school right out of high school, and only lasted one year. i just wasn't ready to committ to a career choice at 19. so, i went off into the world and worked a little while, joined a rock band, moved to the west coast all by myself, fell in love, moved back to the east coast, yada, yada, yada. eventually i was stuck in jobs that sucked and offered no money, because, or so i felt, i had no degree (though i am not saying it is not possible to have a wonderfull and fulfilling career without a degree, that just wasn't my case, and realy isn't the case for illustrators). so i put myself through school. all by myself. i had amazing teachers and was amazed at the great education pratt could offer me.
now, i am not saying that the money's rolling in constantly, but i do freelance on a consistent basis, and i know that if you really want to work commercially, your school matters. all of these online programs for illustration that promise you tons of money and jobs will not get you anywhere, and you'll ultimately just lose money.
just try out schools that offer communications design as a major, or even just drawing and painting majors if they don't have illustration, and in your situation you'd probably get decent support from a school, depending on your talent of course. sallie mae is very accepting of loan applicants (i have horrid crdit and still got a $14,000 loan, for example).
in the meantime, and this is the MOST IMPORTANT PART OF BEING AN ILLUSTRATOR, all i can advise is that you go out every single day and draw. do not go anywhere without your pen and ink and sketchbook. draw everyone sitting with you on the bus on your way to work. draw animals. spend a day only drawing people's hands. experiment with media you've never tried (i fell in love with watercolor crayons when i first discovered them!). make up a commercial-based project that you could illustrate, like 10-15 images of your town, with text - could potentially go into your town's paper or to a local realtor, no? stuff like that is grat for your book.
keep it up with the art show booths and contests - especially those judging them (as a student i once saw an ad for a contest and was not eligible to apply, but recognized a magazine editor's name on the jury list, so i called her...she was happy to set up a meeting with me to look at my portfolio and offer up some advice).

i painted a chair for an art show in a candy theme. you could paint some furniture in a theme like candy, rainbow, different shades of one color, etc. or decoupage like i did with the candy wrappers.
