I think you could get a similar hat by knitting it in the round and making the decreases in four 'lines' rather than in different places. Like when you knit some types of mittens, but instead of decreasing at two sides (to make "pointy" mittens) you decrease in four places. I'm not sure I'm making any sense here, so I hope someone can clarify. :-)
The hats on the website might be knit in some other way, but it might also be that they're knit like I described and just happen to look uneven/bunchy/whatever in the pictures. Anyway they seem to be made with a chunky yarn, so they should be quick to knit.

Post Subject: pricing question- help!
i just learned how to knit and l o v e it. i made a really cute scarf using a eyelashy-yet-chunky yarn called 'bling bling' (i think) and another thin sparkley yarn. anyway i made it for a friend of mine and couldn't resist wearing it once or twice on the sly before giving it to her- someone complemented me on it the last time i wore it and asked me where she could get one and i offered to make one for her (for her to buy) and i'm having a hard time coming up with fair pricing. the yarn was about $16 and they take me from 4 - 6 hours to make. I had first thought to just double the cost of materials, plus the cost of mailing it to her... is this too much? too little? help!

Post Subject: Best deals for yarn in the UK?
(Hi I'm new!) Since starting knitting about 2 weeks ago I've already spent more than I thought I would on my first ever project, I naively thought a baby blanket would only take 2 100g balls of super chunky yarn! Duh!! So I'm going to be seriously in need of cheap places to get yarn for my future projects as this one's going to bankrupt me!... Is there anywhere especially good on the net? Keeping in mind that I'm in the UK!

Post Subject: the hook vs. the sticks
k,
i'm not sure if this is a totally overdone topic (i'm sure it has come up at least once), but what are your feelings about knitting vs. crochet?
see, try as i might i have never been able to click with knitting. sure, i found it relaxing and a way to stay focused during a boring lecture, but i never had the inclination to go beyond the scarf or wrist cuff. but with winter approaching and my current city being so knitting crazy with the amazing yarn shops and knit cafe, etc. i am feeling a bit left out. and it is such a great craft in its portability (and thus conduciveness to sociability) and all those yummy fibres...
so i am considering giving crocheting a proper go - maybe starting with a big fat hook and chunky yarn. do you guys think a lukewarm knitter can get hot and bothered by crochet (sorry for that - feeling really cheesy right now!)?

What does the * mean?
looks like everyone else covered it.
the scarves i've made with this stitch are made out of lion brand homespun, which is a very pain in the neck type of yarn to knit, but makes a great scarf in this stitch. this is a bit of a chunky yarn, using size 10 needles. for a wide scarf for my sister, i cast on 41 (40 + 1). For a more normal width, I cast on 29 (28 + 1).
Depeding on your yarn, you may want to cast on more or less. After a while, you could probably memorize the pattern. if you know how to "read" your stitches, you don't have to refer back at all.
