Post Subject: Anybody In Brooklyn / NYC?
There's a craft fair on Oct 13 at Prospect Park, Brooklyn and I'm looking for a craft fair-mate. The space is $25 ($40 with table and chair). The thing is the space is too huge for me: 10' x 5', I don't have that many products to sell so i'd probably only take up half of that space. If someone wants to split the cost and share the space with me, please let me know! And I need to know soon.
If you wish, you can email me at daibebeads (at) gmail (dot) com
Here's more details about the fair:
http://www.plgarts.org/home.htm
Date: Saturday, October 13, 2007 from 10am – 5pm
(Rain date: Sun, October 14)
Location: The fair is located on Lincoln Rd between Flatbush & Ocean Aves. in Prospect-Lefferts Gardens and is just one block from the Prospect Park Subway station.

Post Subject: Guessing contest on my blog
Does anybody ever make fashion doll dresses here? I do, just for fun, but is IS fun to do, I find. And I even sold one on my last craft fair, so not totally silly, is it? Now years ago, when I needed new dolls for models I bought some used ones, then later found huge numbers in the trash... I dedicated my new blog post to that and set up a fun contest around it. Just to celebrate summer. Hope you enjoy

I'd like to let y'all know about a craft-related e-mail list I'm starting up, and to invite you to send in your submissions and sign up to receive it. Post Subject: Welcome new co-editors!!
I would like to welcome Christy Petterson and Nancy Flynn as the two new co-editors of getcrafty.com! Effective immediately, Nancy and Christy will be taking over Jean's previous role on get crafty.
W had big shoes to fill. First of all, thanks to Jean for helping us by recommending Nancy and Christy. Based on the getcrafty.com’s members’ feedback, it was important for us to continue Jean’s vision for this website, and Christy and Nancy, both long time committed members of getcrafty.com, will be fantastic co-editors. I would also like to thank all of the community members who have offered to help and made suggestions over the past week. The caliber and commitment of members of the getcrafty.com community never ceases to amaze me.
I know many of you are familiar with Nancy and Christy, but I thought I would post some more information just to give you a bit of background on both Nancy and Christy.
Nancy Flynn has been a member of Get Crafty since October 2004, and has written the Dilettante Crafter column since August of 2005. She credits Get Crafty with inspiring her to quit her day job and follow her dream of a more creative life. Thanks to the inspiration and support of the Get Crafty community she has written a craft book for teens that will be published in 2007 and has another in the works for 2008. She also designs a line of handbags (which she sells in local boutiques and craft fairs in Northern California) named after her Get Crafty handle belle epoque.
Craftiness and Christy Petterson go way back. In the 80s she constantly had an in-the-works friendship bracelet pinned to her jeans. Today she creates clothes and accessories for her line called ‘a bardis’ and plans the Indie Craft Experience with two other Atlanta designers. The Indie Craft Experience is a craft market and fashion show that takes place twice a year with participants from all over the country. Christy has been a member of Get Crafty since November of 2003 and has written a column on the site called “how to by ceebee” since August of 2005. She also travels to shows in other cities to sell her creations and you can come meet her at the Renegade Craft Fair in Chicago (September 16 + 17) and Crafty Bastards in D.C. (October 1). www.abardis.com
Please join me in wishing all the best to Christy and Nancy!

I thought it might be good to have a list of craft fairs in California--and other states for that matter. It's been hard trying to find good ones around--most of them don't have that cool young hip feel.
This is sad, but the only ones I know of are:
Bazaar Bizarre, Los Angeles, CA
Renegade Craft Fair, Brooklyn, NY
Renegade Craft Fair, Chicago, IL
Any others? California ones would be so good to know...

CRAFT CONGRESS IS IN SESSION
Indie/diy craft movement organizers holding first – ever worldwide conference
Craft Congress, the first-ever gathering of the diy/indie craft movement's leaders will be
held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on March 31 and April 1, 2007. The goal is to build
connections between the movement's organizers who have been primarily working in their
communities; Craft Congress attendees will share knowledge and experience, creating a
network and fostering the movement's growth.
Fifty participants from across the U.S., Canada, (and one from England), will attend this
gathering of leaders in the increasingly popular craft subculture. Many attendees will stay
in the homes of Pittsburgh hosts.
Local designer and organizer, Kpoene' Kofi-Bruce will be moderating a session on helping designers to sell - visit www.designleague.org.
Craft Congress is organized by the creators of Handmade Arcade,
(www.handmadearcade.com), Pittsburgh's first indie craft fair, which began in 2003. The
idea grew from the indie craft community that was forming across the country, primarily
via the internet. Countless websites, web stores, blogs and forums connect crafters. These
new crafters are mostly young women, in their 20's and 30's, who delight in combining
retro images with traditional craft techniques to produce practical items with an off-kilter,
humorous streak. There is no right or wrong. If anything, the movement is defined by its
eclecticism.
Knitting with Kool Aid dyed wool is new craft, using cocktail umbrellas to make lamp
shades is new craft, turning album covers into purses is new craft.
Fueled by internet relationships, the number of indie craft fairs across the U.S., has tripled
in recent years. Craft Congress' goal is to strengthen the indie craft community by sharing
ideas, experiences and discussing the future of indie crafting. Portions of the sessions will
be podcast for those who are not able to attend. Participants will discuss best practices
and explore ways to expand their markets, techniques for guerilla marketing, business
challenges, such as "big box" stores' attempts to rip off the diy aesthetic.
A recent survey of 100 indie crafters found that over 25% have recently switched from part
time crafting to full time. Almost 85% report their 2006 sales were up from 2005. They sell
via their own websites, (56%), at fairs (90%) and in brick and mortar stores (47%).

Post Subject: painting on rigid plastic
Hi,
I am hoping someone can assist me. I was going to paint some items that are plastic (bed trays, cups etc. ) and personalize them with kids names and designs for a craft fair. I am currently using "Paint for Plastic" by Plaid, but I want to make sure that it will hold out through washing etc. Has anyone done this before or have any suggestions? I also didn't know if anyone knew where I may be able to get the trays etc at wholesale.
Thanks in advance for your help!

Post Subject: Guerilla Style Craft Fair in Los Angeles?
Hi all, I was just bouncing around ideas for future craft shows and thought it would be interesting to organize a guerilla style craft fair. I live in LA and and I''m not completely sure about any permits or fines for setting up a craft fair in a HUGE public park. I was not able to find anything online that states that I can''t do this unless I''m a food vendor. FYI, I do have a seller''s permit. I''m thinking of having as many vendors as possible! Does anyone out there know anything about this or know anyone who''s participated in an event like this?
Thanks

Post Subject: Pittsburgh, PA - Don't Miss The 5th Annual Handmade Arcade!
Handmade Arcade
Saturday, November 8 and Sunday, November 9
Hunt Armory, 324 Emerson St, Pittsburgh
www.handmadearcade.com
Handmade Arcade, Pittsburgh's largest and first independent craft fair, is back this Saturday, November 8, 11am to 7pm and Sunday, November 9, 11am to 5pm, with a brand new location: the historic Hunt Armory, located at 324 Emerson St., in Shadyside. Admission is FREE and the first 100 shoppers each day will receive a swag bag stuffed with crafty goodies.
The award-winning Handmade Arcade brings Pittsburgh-based and national crafters together to create a hip, innovative shopping experience. This year, Handmade Arcade will feature more than 80 vendors selling creative, inventive and progressive crafts, along with music, yummy fare and a "make and take" screen-printing activity led by Artists Image Resource. Handmade Arcade is an excellent opportunity for holiday shoppers looking for something different and for anyone who appreciates the care and creativity that goes into the handmade.
Also new for Handmade Arcade in 2008 is the event's Early Birdie Shopping Pass, available for purchase for $15 at handmadearcade.com. The Early Birdie allows the holder to shop at Handmade Arcade a whole hour early, to beat the crowds, get a first look at featured wares and receive an extra special swag bag.
Part shopping bonanza, part craft showcase, Handmade Arcade is a celebration of the make-it-yourself aesthetic, as well as one of the year's must-do events.
I hope you all like it too. It's not hard to make... you just need some plastic tri-beads, a pipecleaner, and some lace ribbon. These are also inexpensive and could be made in quantity... so it might be a good idea for those of you working on craft fair items for Valentine's Day. The complete tutorial with many pictures can be found here: http://www.crafts-for-all-seasons.com/Valentine-heart-pin.html

It might be different in different places, but in Dallas where I live, EVERYONE makes jewelry. It is basic supply and demand... if you can make your own, then all you are looking for is an idea you like, not necessarily something to buy. Sounds harsh, but it has happened to me too. It really stinks when you are in a show and you don't sell enough to make it worth your while, but it is also a learning experience. Tell your friend to research.... go around the shows that she is entering and look at other people's booths. Is it the same style as other exhibitors? Same price range? Equal or better display? All of these things contribute to people's willingness to buy. Also, if you are showing in a "Craft" fair, then the people who are attending are probably crafty people... they have the talent to make their own. Perhaps find a place like a wedding show, or something where people have the desire to buy and not the talent to make.

I don't know about where to get them made, but I bought several recently at a craft fair from My Favorite Mirror, maybe they have some info on the process on their website?

Are there any crafters on the East Coast or elsewhere interested in setting up a craft fair in NYC or Brooklyn before Renegade? I'm down to give it a try.

Would you be interested in writing for a Craft Fair in San Francisco? Press Releases, About, Bios, that sort of thing? Let me know. I'm organising a show called Bohemiarama in San Francisco and would like to take the show on the road. Let me know if you'd like to know more?

Post Subject: adult fantacy dream catchers what do you think
I bring my dream catchers to my job to inspire the students at my job and one of the students asked could I make one out of condoms of course I acted prefessional in my response, but later on I said not a bad idea. Do you think that something like this would be acceptable at a craft fair if it was behind a curtain?

i can't even imagine how you'd be able to use them in a dream catcher..... i'm intrigued! do tell! and it really depends on the type of craft fair you're attending. if it's some indie thing i'd say don't bother with the curtain. but if it's some "kountry kraft" type dealie, i'd be wary of bringing it at all!

Nancy,
That sounds like a great idea. I think it will be nice to know that information has gone through some sort of gatekeeper process. I also like the idea of keeping the crafty business links, perhaps in a wiki or something like that?
Because the wiki can be edited by anybody, I worry about opening it up to this kind of advertising. Not only will spammers use the space, but those with few scruples might mess with a competitor crafter's URL or something.
I think it's a good idea to keep the crafty business links thread, just because it allows people to post about their businesses. Honestly, I don't read through the thread because it's so huge, but I expect others have some use for it. I'm much more likely to buy from someone's shop via their etsy link or a blog posting.
One quick question about the new crafty business forum that's been suggested: I love the idea of the forum going back to GGC's roots and being a place for the self-employed, those with home-based businesses, or craft fair regulars to give and get advice. I do, however, see a potential for abuse with people posting something like this:
Hey, guys! Check out my new web site. Any comments?
www.some-crafty-girls-stuff.com
I think helping our members build great web sites to promote themselves and their crafts is important, but this sort of post just gets around what we don't want the new forum to be.
I'd like to suggest that such threads be deleted and that mods contact the original posters and ask them to repost their thread with greater detail about their web site, what their concerns are, etc. Basically, what specific areas of their web site do they want people to evaluate? So, while the above post would be inapporpriate, a post like this would be acceptable:
Hey, guys! I've just revamped my web site (www.some-crafty-girls-stuff.com) and wanted your opinions. How do the pages look on your various monitors? Is the new navigation system clear and user-friendly? Finally, I'm trying to take better pictures of my wares. Can some of you look at the enlarged photos and offer advice about things I can continue to work on/tweak? Thanks in advance!
What's everyone else's thoughts on this?
-Angelique (who feels guilty for inventing problems before the forum is even made public!)

I'm in Charleston, WV. I know of one knitting group in Charleston, the Appalachian Knitters Guild, and the contact is Geane Helfrich, Cross Lanes, WV, tuba@newwave.net. Also, if you head north the first few days of July, the Mountain State Art & Craft Fair at Cedar Lakes in Ripley is amazing! www.msacf.com Definitely worth a day trip! There's a pretty thriving art & craft scene in WV, you just have to meet a couple of people and they'll introduce you to a couple of people, and so on, and so on...(sorry channeling a Breck?? commercial?).

Have you checked at the Glitter Workshop on E. Johnson? They have an amazing assortment of crafts on consignment - they also hold their own craft fair several times a year.

Post Subject: Online sales vs. Craft fairs sales
Hello I was just wondering if anyone has had more than a few sales of thier crafts online.
I have gone on a few crafters forums and have spoken to quite a few crafters on this subject. Most have stated that they don't sell well on the internet, but are very successful at craft fairs in such.
I have decided to try a craft fair, this spring and also started displaying my handmade dream catcher on my lawn and what do you know I sold 2 in off my lawn.

Post Subject: Selling all Yarn - Business has gone belly-up
Hi,
Basically, my crocheted/knitted clothing business has gone bust (not that it ever got off ground). Anyhow I am selling all my yarn. It would be great if you could place this information on your site somewhere. I have kept my online store open until I sell my yarn and probably my displays later on. All my contact info. is on my site.
Anyhow my link is http://enjoysyarnbarn.com
There are lots of great deals now and more to come. I should have all yarn listed after last craft fair which is March 20.
