Post Subject: Share a craft for charity
Please look at the new forum section- 'GetCrafty Community Book'. We need people to write up their favorite inexpensive craft ideas, especially ones for home and apartment decoration. The idea can be at any level of difficulty, but it should reflect practical and beautiful craft ideas.

Post Subject: Uses for left-over PVC "fake wood" blind slats
We recently installed fake wood blinds in our home. The blinds are made of PVC and are white. We removed a lot of slats in order to size them for our windows, and I hate to just through all of those slats away. I'm trying to think of something I could make with them...possibly jewelry? The material can be cut and I think it can be sanded. I tried stamping on it with a rubber stamp and it takes the ink beautifully.

Post Subject: free time at college-need project ideas
I'm seem to have a lot of free time at school. I've been doing a lot of crochet work and cross stitch but need some other ideas of things to do. Anyone have any ideas of some projects I could do that don't require too much material. I'm living in a dorm room so I don't have too much space for craft supplies. I've thought of scrapbooking but don't want to bring all my supplies there....I figure when I really want to scrapbook I can do it at home on the weekends. I can't come up with any ideas of craft ideas for some reason.
I am also looking for a small Christmas/holiday project to give as favors for a party. Something cute, creative but cheap. My family has a party every year and last year I painted the plaster ornaments, a couple years ago I made candy snowmen. We have to make around 75.

I am looking for Halloween Craft Ideas for an upcoming Monster Mash party that the local library is giving for the little kiddies. They have to be pretty easy crafts, but not lame things like ghosts made from tissue paper. Something cool. I was thinking a craft for ages 3-5 and then 6-8 then 9-11. Any ideas?

round-robin is a great idea! I have a lot of blank journals that I've bought while travelling or ones that I've made myself.
when i give them as gifts, my friends won't use them. they want to save them for something special. but i really like all of your ideas!
an empty journal is boring when you can use these ideas to personalize them.
I keep a journal where i paste and write down craft ideas and gift ideas.
i randomly select blank pages and start writing or pasting. The next time I look for blank pages, I run into filled pages and refresh my memory on the things that I want to make.

Hi-
I'm new here so take any suggestions with a grain of salt. First of all, I really like your site. It was easy to navigate and full of inspiration.
I would like to see some craft ideas for bigger projects- what I mean is something I can remodel my home on a budget with. Coordinating placemats and tablecloth, rug hooking, throw pillows... maybe a cute way to organize all my crafting supplies! Also, I have a zillion patches that I picked up when traveling and draw a complete blank on what to do with them.

del.icio.us is great and I use it in a few ways.
1. I bookmark craft ideas, not the whole website, but just the page with the pattern I want or idea I find intressting.
2. Things I need to (or want to) buy, art supplies or clothes, I bookmark and tag with wish. This also gives my husband heads up around birthdays and other gift giving holidays.
3. I use the Internet at Home, Work, School, my Mom's house so its nice to have your bookmarks every where.
Here is my del.icio.us page, http://del.icio.us/violet13, I've just cleaned it out so its a bit smaller that usual.

Post Subject: craft ideas
Hello Instant,
welcome to getcrafty! :)
I hope you have a great vacation. What about working on a vacation scrapbook? You can collect postcards and maps and other visual items to put in it, and then design it along the way? Or you could make your own postcards to mail to people on your vacation.
Other craft ideas are making t-shirt designs with fabric paint (you could do them for the whole family), do something with a polaroid camera and then make cards from your vacation. I think crafts that involve painting and glitter would be too messy for your vacation because of bumps in the road and then things needing to be left out to dry. What about learning how to knit? That could be a fun craft! Or origami?
Another idea could be to come up with a craft idea that you could do with your sister. If you are going to be spending 12 hours with someone, it might be a good idea to include them in your project, it might be fun too!

Post Subject: Making an Apartment into a Home?
Hello, fellow Craftsy people! I've got kind of an odd problem that I was wondering if you all could help me with.
My boyfriend and I are going to be moving in a few months, and we're going to be living in a little studio apartment. The move is going to be wonderful, but it's also going to be very hard because I'm moving about six hours away from my family (specifically my mom and little brother), so, I want to find a way to help make the transition easier.
The thing is, I'm just a dorky little 19 year old College Student, so I don't really have many things to add to the place to make it ours. I have a couple of posters, but that really isn't going to cut it.
What I'm wondering is if anybody knows any craft ideas for making little things to make a house (or in this case, an apartment) a home?
Any ideas are welcome, as I'm open to pretty much everything. (Though I'm just starting knitting, so anything too advanced will probably be a few years in the making!)
I'd greatly appreciate any help anyone might be able to give me with this. I'm, to be frank, really nervous about how badly I'm going to miss my mom, my brother, and 'home', so this is something wieghing heavily on my mind.

Post Subject: craft ideas for used windows
Does anyone know of any interesting craft ideas for an old paned window? It's an old wooden frame window, and fairly big - I guess about 3'x4', with 9 panes. Long story short, it's from the old house of a friend, who had a lot of emotional attachment to the place. I ended up with these windows (another long story) and it occurred to me I might be able to make her something with one of them. Might be a bust idea, but I'm not the most skilled artistically and could use ideas if anyone has any...

yeah, i really had no intention of including any sort of bodily functions in the forum - really don't think this is the place, and i have no intention of, or desire to take that direction. at least not on this site. i was thinking more household stuff, and in terms of mama stuff, ideas of things to do with and for the ankle-biters; craft ideas, projects, activities. but like i said, that would be more of a secondary aspect of the forum, definitely not an emphasis. i was really thinking of things like alternative cleaning methods, decorating ideas, reusing/recycling/repurposing, ideas to keep one from going crazy while stuck in the house all day.

it's crazy how this has morphed - it's like playing that game 'telephone'!
i have no intention on this being ANYTHING related to parenting other than stuff like playdoh recipes, and other craft ideas for kids. as far as the whole parenting thing would go, i just don't think that this would be the place. (i'm working on making a place where that WOULD be appropriate, to a certain extent. if anybody's interested, PM me and i'll give you the details if you want, but i'm still in a very initial planning phase, having started on it after seeing the responses this thread has gotten. but even there, i still have no interest in the whole bodily function thing other than a crafty idea or two to get your kid to use the potty. )
(thanks for watching my back knittymomma!)
the forum would just be home related stuff - not parenting, and not just for moms...... i say to include stuff for mamas because a lot of us are at home, and it just seems to be the appropriate spot for stuff for moms to do; mom projects (or things to make for other people's kids), and kid projects - instead of getting lost in or clogging up other forums.
in response to any implied reverse sexism, none was intended. it's just that this site seems to cater to the "fairer sex." believe me, i give my props to the men who stay home and/or are crafty in their own right, though i have yet to see any boys around here. (....and the 'today show' domestic diva was a MAN, but perhaps we should be more PC and use the term "domestic engineer"? of course, i'd prefer to go the other route with something like house goddess. but that's just me, and again, no sexism intended. really.)

Most all of my books are second hand. Not only is it cheaper, it's more of an adventure that way. I go to the used book store or thrift store and scour around, ending up finding authors I've never heard of or old favorites I'd forgotten. I'm much more likely to try someone I've never heard of if it's only a quarter or so. I find that thrift store and/or used book stores are also great for magazines and children's books. I have a smallish collection of children's books from my own childhood and from the thrift store (most of them ones I remember from growing up). Magazines are great for cutting up and getting craft ideas out of, and they're only a nickel to a quarter. Children's books are great to de stress to or read before bed to unwind...or anytime you want to be a kid again.

Name: Katrin
Location: Colorado
Age: 39½
Married, no kids
Pets: 3 cats
- Fizzgig, 11, skinny orange & white tabby, love of my life
- Blanche (Bianca), 6, big fat brown/black stripey, purriest cat ever
- Lenore (Lenny), ~1, stripey calico who just keeps growing & growing
I collect:
Stuff that would otherwise get thrown away, most notably work-related packaging materials, which I always intend to use as craft supplies but often just ends up sitting around.
Knitting is currently my favorite craft, but next week I might be back to designing purses. Whatever I'm doing, it's likely to involve recycled or salvaged materials.
I'd like to learn to get my workspace (and the rest of my home) neat and organized.
I love to stretch my imagination by thinking up new variations on craft projects.
I sometimes make comics. I used to draw a web comic strip (written by a friend). I'm currently making slow progress on an autobiographical short story, and have just started writing a fictional story that may be a graphic novel someday.
Lately, I enjoy watching TV shows that feature a lot of interpersonal conflict, because they give me perspective on my own life (knowing it happens everywhere, not just to me).
I still love to do "kids'" crafts like Shrinky Dinks. I recently used Mod Podge for the first time in forever, and the smell took me right back to 1973. I feel sorry for people who never got to do crafts as kids, but sorrier for those who think they had to stop because they grew up.
I always carry a blank book that serves as scrapbook, sketchbook and journal. I keep a glue stick handy to stick things in it. My current one was a gift from my sister, and I'm using it as an ongoing "letter" (with daily observations, craft ideas & instructions) that I'll give back to her when it's full.
I like old houses, used clothing and anything that's vintage or secondhand. I think it comes from being the oldest - I never got hand-me-downs, but instead had to give up my treasured possessions to others. I'm not interested in antique "value" so much as an item's history, respecting our belongings and creations, because they'll outlast us.
I'm just starting to get comfortable with admitting that my favorite kind of music is alt-country.
I'm a Leo, August 15th.
I was born in Illinois, raised in North Dakota, and have lived in Colorado since 1990.
I stay up way too late when I have to work early in the morning. When I get home, I sleep the afternoon away.
I appreciate that this survey asks nothing about our job titles or what we do for money, but rather what inspires us and who we are. I lose track of the distinction too often, and it's good to be reminded.

It's definitely geared toward the reader of Woman's Day or Family Circle who wants to jump on this trendy craft bandwagon.
Well, I guess you are right. In the 30+ years I have been aware of the existence of Woman's Day and Family Circle (dating back to when my mom would buy them at the grocery store and I would pore over them at the kitchen table), I have found many craft ideas. If that makes me a trendy bandwagon jumper, then so be it. :)

awesome stuff. I love the library! It's my main source of reading. I usually only buy books I feel I will read or use more than once.
I agree with the 99-cent shampoo. My fiance and I buy a huge bottle from a bulk shopping club. It last a long time for both of us. The conidtioner is what I spend more money on.
Also I start as many of you do on xmas gifts 6 months in advance. It's starting to get to that time. I plan out art and craft ideas and try to accomplish them.
Also I buy xmas or any holiday decorations right after the holiday for next year. You can get so many discounts on wrapping paper, and decorations at usually about 75% off.
A friend of mine every year holds a Dye party. Where everyone helps to dye or highlight each others hair. Also she said you never use the same thing so anyone that wants to experiment with left overs is free to do so.
I have been buying a lot more romaine lettuce. It's the same price as iceburg yet is better for you and kepts and last longer in the fridge.
I hate throwing things away and every year during christmas I'd get a poinsettia. I have an average green thumb and kept it alive and couldn't bare to throw it out but worried about keeping it around longer with a small dog in the house I would plant them at my parents house on the side of the house. Mom takes care of them but she admits not as much as they say you should, but it doesn't seem to matter because now every year she has poinsettias blooming at her door in early decemeber.

I liked Budget Living, but I agree it wasn't all that budget friendly. I also love Martha Stewart Living and Real Simple, and if I could afford the subscriptions I defenitely would have those two.
I love all of the Reader Digest spinoffs that they come up with for crafts, I have the one for knitting. It was only five dollars and the instructions are very clear. It also has a nice selection of beginning patterns.
I second whoever suggested Beadstyle. I've only started toying with beads but I liked this magazine's simple instructions on what is needed, and how to make some nice pieces. I plan to peruse it quite extensively the next time I'm at Barnes and Nobles.
I don't care for Readymade that much either way, but I like the forum.
Bust also has some neat craft ideas in it, and is inspiring.

Greetings All,
Hope you had a great weekend. I sure did. I did two events for Indigofera at the Rotunda in University City. I've been getting PM about interest in PCM. We will plan a gathering in the near future. The detail will be posted. But, in the meantime GO ahead and get together. Even it is just two of you drinking soy lattes and sharing craft ideas and have fun.
The Philly Craft Mafia is indeed a unique group. We are Indie Craft Entreprenuers & Indie Crafters. There are different types of membership/afilliations. It may or may not be your thing. We plan to host an Official Website, Workshops, Events ( that support Indie crafters and charities) Then there will be the misc fun stuff like naked lady parties, Craft brunches ( Ha Ha I made that up :) ) Shopping Trips (Cheap but quaility Fabric, cool vintage stuff, NYC etc)
One of the best parts is you will have you little "supportive family"
who will help spread the buzz about all your creative little adventures.
No matter how big or small. We also believe in supporting other crafters/groups as long as it is positive, Don't let the name Philly Craft Mafia fool you. We are really quite loving sisters.

my main culprits are:
1- not putting away clothes
2- not dealing with the paper clutter (i'm good with dealing with most of my mail, but the filing, and the hundreds of print outs i have of craft ideas just linger on the floor)
4- not finishing what i start. starting a project and then leaving it all out on the floor if i'm still working on it.
i thought i was the only one!
this whole thread makes me feel a little better about being a "slob" as friends and family endearingly put it
i've always imagined that every other girl in the world was tidy and i was just the oddball... i'm so glad i'm not alone
it's also giving me that cleaning urge, now i want to go home and sort some of the little piles of clutter around my house

louisa, i agree completely.
sorting my stuff, cleaning my stuff, and organizing it just takes too much time! i also want to wake up and make muffins, instead of having to put laundry away, etc.
i did spend 3 hours cleaning the kitchen on sunday morning, and boy, it felt great.
i'm one step ahead because my darling, even though he doesn't live with me, always does dishes after we eat, if i'm tired, etc. so i don't really have those languishing around.

oh i love martha. love, love, love her. i'm from the next town over from her in jersey, and she's really my role model in many ways.
what i don't like about her is the emphasis on perfection (i ranted about this on the girls gone crafty board a bit). i feel like her message is yes, you can be valued for domesticity, but only if you're perfect at it. i also feel like there's a lot of classism there too. so many of her recipes, craft ideas, etc, call for expensive food processing equipment, ingredients (sp?), pots and pans, tools, materials. it's discouraging. and i think it devalues the work of women (and men) just trying to make things nice with whatever resources they because they're not perfect or the highest quality possible.
i guess as long as you look to her for inspiration about what's possible, and not a how-to guide, it's fine.
