Post Subject: Craftland Craft Show!
Just wanted to spread the word about the Craftland craft show to all of the crafty folk on get crafty. Check it out!
Craftland is back for its third glittery year!
Applications are now being accepted for the 3rd Annual Craftland, a contemporary craft show in Providence, Rhode Island featuring an eclectic assortment of fine crafts and cutting-edge, quirky handmade items. Proceeds from Craftland benefit New Urban Arts www.newurbanarts.org , a free art studio program for Providence high school students. Craftland operates for five weeks in November and December at a retail space in Providence, Rhode Island and sells unique and unusual handmade items on consignment. Artist need not be present to sell their work. Artists drop off or ship their work to Craftland and Craftland displays and sells the work – like a consignment store or gallery. Artists receive 60% of the retail price on items sold, 30% goes to the cost of running the show, and 10% goes to New Urban Arts.
To download a Craftland Artists Application which includes all of the nitty gritty details please visit www.craftlandshow.com
Applications are due by September 10, 2004 POSTMARK DEADLINE
Most of the artists participating in Craftland live in New England, but we also accept work from artists throughout the United States. To keep Craftland fresh and irresistible, we seek a range of people to participate. Whether you have participated in craft shows before, are an art school student or have made nifty things but never sold them, we want to hear from you! Over 100 local and far away artists participated in Craftland 2003 -- teenagers to grandmothers, professionals to first-timers. We encourage artists to view Craftland as an opportunity for whimsical craft exploration. Some artists have created limited-edition new work exclusively for Craftland, and others have experimented with techniques outside their usual work (painters who made puppets, jewelers who made holiday ornaments, and chefs who made magnets). Other artists sell the prints, jewelry or books they produce year-round.
Craftland is about the love of making things, the pleasure of having one's own creative practice and the celebration of all things crafty. And it supports a great cause! Please share this information with anyone you know who might be interested in participating this year.

Post Subject: New Crafty TV show looking to cast guests.
Hi Crafty Peeps,
My name is Cathie Filian and I produce and co-host Creative Juice on DIY and HGTV. Our production company is looking for young adult & teen crafters for a new "untitled" craft show. This show will be guest based - so you could be the star of the show. :)
We are seeking crafty guests from all over the USA and will begin the process with DVD submissions. The DVD's are not for air on TV they are for casting purposes. Fear not if you don't have access to a video camera. Just send a photo of yourself (big Smile) holding or showing off your handmade items.
Here are a few guidelines:
You should have high energy and great style. Show off your style - flaunt it!
Your crafts should be cutting edge current - think Urban Outfitters or MTV!
You can make anything from room decor, jewelry, clothing, soap making, knitted and crochet goods, lip balm, art, etc. The most important thing is that you know your stuff and can explain how you make it in a clear and fun way.
Video Guidelines:
1.Have high energy and be yourself. State your name, where you are from, how long you have been crafting and what your craft project is. Try to hold your project in your hand or have it next to you and briefly explain to us how you made it. You can show a step or two on how you made it you want.
2.Try to keep the camera as smooth as possible (using a tripod helps) and make sure you have lots of light so we can see you.
3.Fashion tips for the camera: Please don't wear prints, all black (even if you are goth), white or red. Tattoos, elaborate hair dos, and punky attire are just fine.
4.Videos should be no longer than 3 minutes and should be submitted on DVD only. Tapes cannot be viewed. On the DVD please include your name, your craft, email, city, phone number and age if you are under 18.
Photo Guidelines:
1.Have a big smile in the photo. Try to hold your project in your hand or have it next to you. You can include a picture of you at a sewing machine or at your work station or in the process of making something.
2.Fashion tips for the camera: Please don't wear prints, all black (even if you are goth), white or red. Tattoos, elaborate hair dos, and punky attire are just fine.
3.Photos should be digital, high resolution and should be submitted in print and on a CD. On the back of the photo and on the CD please include your name, your craft, email, city, phone number and age if you are under 18.

Post Subject: Sacramento Holiday Show - Indie/ Alternative Craft Fair
Hi all,
I am issuing a desperate plea for help! I want to hold a large craft show (similar to Felt Club www.feltclub.com) here is Sacramento. The problem is that I don't know a whole lot about what sort of sponsorship packages that we should offer, plus how to get sponsors. I have a good idea of how to get local businesses to sponsor but how do you get big sponsors like CRAFT & Adorn? Any help or advice would be GREATLY appreciated!

I just started making these really cute jeans and I am about to attend my first craft show/fair. I buy gently used jeans modify them with beads, fabic, etc. My question is do I need to remove all the brand name (levi, gap, etc) labels? I know I am supposed to leave the material content and care label (regardless of whether or not there is a brnad name on it) in case there are issues with allergies, etc. HELP! I don''t want to get in trouble!

Post Subject: Cocktails and Crafting in Miami?
I just moved here after a quick year in Reno. There seems to be a crafty glut here??! I just put an ad on Craigslist Miami under Groups, looking for people who want to get together to craft (and cocktails? coffee? tea?) and maybe put on a craft show in the future. My current interest right now is Zakka-like stuff. I have TONS of Zakka books from Japan, plus fabric I buy from Superbuzzy.com and other sources. I'd love to share!
Also open to just stitching and bitching. I suck at knitting, except for hats and a scarf, but maybe you can teach me? (does anyone knit in this hot and humid land anyway???! LOL)

Post Subject: purse and jewelry party
I did a craft show last weekend and a lady was really interested in having me host a purse and jewelry party for the ladies at work (HR from a hospital). They are planning a girls night out kinda thing.
I still need to call her for the details. What I'm asking is, if any of you purse sellers maybe interested in working with me on this?
I do have some purses and wristlets from my consignment website, but would need more variety. It will be a great way to promote your shop! I am in Rockford, IL, if you are in the area, we can work together. Otherwise, it would be on a consignment base.
If you are interested, please email contact@maustudio.com

I'm renting this room with other small home based businesses in the local area this Saturday, April 28th from 10am to 3pm.

above the antique mall in Rockford, IL. (across from Rockford College)
If you are in the area, please stop by! Vendors from Watkins, Tupperwear, Mary Kay, Mia Bella's Candles, Maustudio Jewelry and more! Admission is FREE!
Besides me who made jewelry, stationery and accessories, another lady and husband make wood work and wreath and flower arrangements. I understand this is not a ALL handmade craft show, we would like to continue doing these events, and hope more vendors will join us next time. If you are a craft person in the area and you are interested, contact me for more details.

Post Subject: Send me your business cards, samples etc.
I've been working on getting my office area organized and I came across some little paper bags that I got when I was in Brazil. They say "Pipocão" on them because they are meant to hold popcorn.
Anyway, I have lots of them and I was thinking they would be perfect for little goody bags that I could fill with business cards and stuff from other crafters, and I could hand them out with purchases when I do craft shows.
On May 6, I'm doing a craft show in Iowa City and on May 20 I have another one here in Chicago. So if you want to reach buyers in the Midwest, send me your cards, stickers or other promotional material.

This Saturday is the first annual Caffeinated Craft Show, I'll be there, and I'm bringing the big display piece, so be sure to stop by and get your picture taken as a fetus!
There are going to be all sorts of different vendors there, so if you haven't done any Mother's Day shopping yet, or if you're a Mom and feel like treating yourself to something extra nice, or if you have no children, and no parents, and you just like to buy things, this is the place to be.
All vendors are local cottage-industry types, so you'll find one-of-a-kind and handmade items you can't find anywhere else. Help support indie businesses in Cincinnati!

Post Subject: Has anyone done Depart-Ment in Chicago?
Now that I have my first craft show (DIY Trunk show in Chicago) under my belt, I was thinking about doing Depart-Ment in December. But I was looking at their site (http://www.depart-ment.com/) and it seems too good to be true.
As far as I can tell the way it works is you drop of your stuff the Wednesday before the show, all labeled with your name and the price. Then they arrange it into departments--all the women's clothes over here, all the jewelry over there etc. The show is from Friday until Sunday, and then after it's over you pick up the stuff that didn't sell and your money.
As far as I can tell they don't charge a fee or take a percentage, so I don't understand how they can afford to do this. Am I missing something?
Red Rabbit is a group of friends, all artists and artisans, who get together regularly for raucous lunches to discuss all things art and craft related. And now we're putting on our first holiday show! Set in the beautiful 160-acre Descanso Gardens, in La Cañada Flintridge, this Holiday Arts & Craft Market will feature 27 local Southern California Artists and Crafters. Included will be works in glass, ceramics, jewelry, fiber arts, mixed media and other handmade items. Come visit us and then spend an afternoon enjoying the holiday atmosphere at the Gardens!
Hours: 9:00 am - 3:30 pm
Tickets: Admission to craft show is free with paid Descanso Gardens admission: General $8.

I am thrilled to announce the re-grand opening and organizing of The Flying Cat Artist Co-Op!
The Flying Cat is a dandy little store front in Mainstrasse Village in Covington Ky, we are looking to showcase independent artists and crafters in the store front, hold workshops and classes in the back spaces, as well as hold fund raisers (to benefit the co-op), and community crafting events in the NKY area. As most of you know I am organizing a "craft show" for the spring, this certainly is still on! But as a main focus for the NKY craft community The Flying Cat is hoping to get its doors open, and artists works in ASAP, The goal is to have opening day on Black Friday (day after Thanksgiving!) and a mini- gallery opening that night. As well as being apart of Covington's First Friday gallery hop.
We need you! If you are in the NKY area and are interested in being apart of this co-op please contact me ASAP, we are getting the space ready for opening, and can use the help if you can offer it, be it physically showing up to pitch in, donating cleaning supplies, or materials for displaying the art work, and most importantly the art and crafts of our artists!
Space is limited, so we will be looking into what options work as far as rotating stock (as a possibility) as well as show casing a particular artist monthly or bi-monthly. Funds are limited, as this is a not-for-profit artist co-op, we are all students or similar artisans who want to breath some life into the craft community in our area! Any contribution is welcome and greatly appreciated!
We are looking for artists who are interested in having their goods in our shop - if you are intersted please send me a few photos -or your etsy link. We do a standard 40% take from all sales - and the entire % goes back into the Co-op to help keep the lights on and pay for advertising etc.
Any questions or info - please get a hold of me!! I know some of you showed interest in the craft show for the spring, I hope you will be equally interested in this!

Post Subject: Brag (again!): New Job #2!
How dare I post two brags within one week! :)
After volunteering my DJ services to the Boys and Girls Club for over 8 years, I was hired today to teach arts and crafts after school. What is weird about this is that I just had a dream this weekend that I had a craft show at their new gym annex!!!!!! *start Twilight Zone music*
It doesn't pay much and I plan to just put the money back into the club for the supplies I will need. They have the regular types of supplies like schools get(glue, construction paper, crayons, markers, etc), but I plan to turn the place upside down with more fun, hip crafts. My biggest thrill is that I get to have a bulletin board or two to decorate!!!! I haven't done that since I taught preschool! Title of my first bulletin board design: "Get Crafty!!!"
So I have my new coffee house job 3 hours a day 3 times a week or so and then from 3-6 I teach arts and crafts! Oh, and let me not forget my DJ gigs on the weekends! Haha! I'll never complain I am bored off my butt again!
I start Wednesday, so I need to come up with projects for this week and then Friday I need to turn in my plan for the next week.

Post Subject: Pointers for craft shows??
I might be searching under the wrong thing but I would like any tips you may have for handling craft shows. Or maybe you can point me to existing threads? :)
I have a friend who makes lovely beaded earrings and she's having trouble selling them. They are crystal beads with sterling charms and sterling findings and extremely well made. No junk here. She asks $15.00 a pair. She sold none at her first craft show, now she has a friend's yard sale coming up and she's going to try that.
It's been suggested that she display them on branches or something up high and also that she might attract people if she were making them on site. I suggested throwing in an incentive like a bracelet half-price with two pairs earrings or something like a bonus. I also suggested she have a mirror by the earrings so ladies could hold them up and see how nice they look.
I've only done two craft shows and results were dismal so we're both open to helpful ideas. Thank you. :)

What a great idea! I would have loved reversible Halloween/Christmas outfits for the kidlets when they were wee. Love the print/gingham idea too. I also like the one side print/one side solid idea Sarabell suggested.
My daughter had one reversible overalls thingy with two different batik patterns and I really liked that one. I would have loved more, but I got it at Salvation Army, probably originally purchased at a craft show or something, and I never found anything else like it.

I do love the new season of iron chef. I thought it would be cool if there was a simular themed craft show on tv. like the DIY network were they take to craft masters and give them a secret ingredient.
in addition to the show they could have a website were some of the ideas are shared.

Like what???
I do the little things becuase they seem to sell better... impulse buys, you know, and I don't really have a lot of patience for projects that take a long time to complete. I think maybe I should post some of my other things up there, like some of the shirts I do, but jewellery is really hard to sell in a place like that because there is so much competition.
And right now things are a little on the low side because I'm doing a craft show today.

At a craft show I did last year there was someone selling bath products who did what I thought was was the most brilliant thing ever--he (yes, it was a he, surprisingly) put pumps of his hand soap in the bathrooms.
The show was held in a park fieldhouse that had really awful soap, so of course everyone used his soap, which was wonderful and smelled like chai. He was swamped the whole day. I actually wanted to buy some, but it was too crowded around his table, so I gave up on it.

For me, the online experience has been tough.
Maintaining the web site took as long as, if not longer, than working on new pieces. My biggest challenge was taking decent-looking pictures of my stuff and getting them posted with descriptions. I never know how to describe something without sounding like a J Peterman catalog on Seinfeld.
Plus, I have zero graphic design ability, so I wasn't 100% happy with the site my husband and I put together. I finally saved up the money to get a much more polished site designed by Lightning Bug Designs. (I can't wait to see how it looks. They are working on it now.)
And shows are so tiring. I had a craft show today... So I came home from a full day of work yesterday, worked on jewelry until 4 am, woke up at 6 am, did the show until 6 pm, showered and went to a wedding at 7:30 pm.
Even with exhaustion, I like doing shows. I love meeting other artists and customers face-to-face. Plus, local store/gallery owners often scout for new talent/wares at shows. Since I sell 99% of my work at shows, I am going to keep up with the show circuit for now.
But I'm also having the web site done so that people can see my work at their leisure. A web presence is so helpful (whether just contact info, pics, or full-blown e-commerce). When people see a whole bunch of vendors at a show, they often go back through the cards they pick up and look online to remind themselves of what that person's work looked like. (That was how I got my consignment relationship with a local museum store.)
I like the way Shabby said it: "Don't put all the eggs in one basket."

I just wanted you all to know that I love this site! My name is Cathie and I wanted to share the crazy news that I just got.....I just found out that I got my own craft show. It is a funky hip craft show - not boring stuff. We will be on the DIY network - the crazy part is that we will not air till Dec of 2005. I was picked up for 26 episodes and a 1 hour holiday special. The network is a part of foodtv and hgtv - the DIY side is a bit borning...but I am hoping to shake things up!!!! I don't know the name of the show yet because the network felt like my title had a negative word in it. By the way the word was required. The title I want to use is Assembly Required. I guess we will see - I had to submit 15 additional titles this morning. I am really excited and a little sick to my stomach. I'll up date the progress on my new blog. I really wanted all of the getcrafty boys & girls to be the first to know.

Most retail stores come to me because I set up a wholesale page. I also use GoogleAd Words. Word of mouth and sharing on message boards help also. This may sound silly but even posting fliers helps. I had a lady come to my booth at a craft show because she saw my flier... went to my website and saw that I was going to be at the show. That reminds me... I better get my fliers out tomorrow. Also... my work is unique and one of a kind so it sells itself. UNIQUE sells!!!

Post Subject: Snow Shoe PA craft show report
Saturday was my first craft show ever. It was in Snow Shoe, PA. I had no idea what to expect, who would be there, what the layout would be, etc.
Turned out it was a flea market/craft show and the signage was "Flea Market" so very few people were really in the market for crafty things! Oh, well.
The table only cost me $5. It was about 45 min drive. It was a nice day to drive and it was a nice day for people to get out and do something. I made $27. Take out the $5 for booth rental, the $4 I spent on food, the $4 I spent on other vendor's items ($2 for a big tub of vintage buttons, $2 for a spoon rack) and I came home with $16. Minus gas money. LOL
At any rate, it was good to make some contacts. I hope to have two other shows coming up. Met two women who are organizing shows in other nearby towns and they liked my stuff, said it was unique, asked me to fill out an app to be in their shows. Since I obviously still have the stock, why not?
All in all, it was a good day. Just not good for sales.

I live in Noblesville and I have some from Carmel, Greenwood and Franklin. If you are interested, we will probably meet in Indianapolis!!
BTW, I found a mom who knits cool little bags and when I asked about starting a "Stitch and Bitch" group, she freaked out on me. "What kind of name is that?!" Sometimes, these Indiana people kill me.

What show are you doing on Nov. 6th? I'm in the Dallas area and doing a show on Nov 6th (in Plano)- are we doing the same show?
No. I work at a high school, and the cheerleaders are sponsoring a craft show as a fund raiser. Starting off close to home is less intimidating ;).
Incidentally, I spoke with my stepsister who does craft shows sometimes, and she told me the same thing about getting a tax number. For some reason, I was under the impression it would take a long time. It's nice to be wrong but have it work out in my favor ;).

Post Subject: Texas taxes and stuff
Hi, all -
I am in the process of getting all my ducks in a row to start an online business (doing-business-as permit, tax number, all that stuff). The thing is, there is a craft show I would like to participate in, and I don't think there's enough time for all that stuff to get processed. I have never done this before, so my questions to you more experienced ladies who know how to do this stuff in Texas are: Do I have to do anything special about collecting sales tax if I just get a booth in my own name? If there's paperwork to fill out, can I get it taken care of in a month (the show is November 6 - I originally thought it was the weekend before Thanksgiving, which would have given me more time)?

I'm very intrigued by this new fad and would like to make some for an upcoming craft show... *This fact might be entirely made up for by the fact that Lava Hot Springs is about thirty minutes away, open year round, and the perfect place to relax and chill out after all the work of prepping for a craft show. And we have really good homeschooling laws.:-)

oh sure...actually, I saw Illinois and just ASSUMED you were in the Chicago area...but I have no idea where you are! Department is a craft show here in Chicago (www.depart-ment.com). I've had mixed success there, but there's not entry fee (they just take 10% of sales) so it's kind of a no-risk way to get your stuff out there. They happen 4 times a year I think.
Again, your stuff rocks. You will surely be successful. Good luck!

I'm glad you started this thread. I've never thought to "market" when I'm selling at a craft show - what a great idea!
I think you will make a lot of additional sales that way. People tend to get a bit overloaded when they see all the vendors - they don't want to open their wallet too soon, because there's still so much else to see. I also think some folks just need more time to mull over a purchase. They kind of stalk your booth for a while but just aren't sure, so they go home empty handed. Having access to you after will ensure they can find you if they decide later they really should have bought that item they were checking out.

Post Subject: Is there anything else like Depart-ment?
I know Portland is supposedly the capital of the crafty universe, and I am ok with that. I love Portland and, sure, it has a lot going for it. And there are other cities that are pretty damn crafty too.
But tell me, do any of you have anything like Depart-ment?
http://www.depart-ment.com/
I'm serious. I want to know if there's anything like it anywhere else. I think it's a brilliant idea and I've never heard of anything like it.
For those of you not familiar, Depart-ment is a cross between a craft show and a department store. People bring their stuff and help set it up in "departments." So if I were to bring in some shirts, they would go with all the other shirts. Everybody's stuff is mixed in together.
It's nice for the shoppers because they can see all of whatever it is they are shopping for in one spot, and they can pay for all of their purchases at once.
And it's super nice for the buyers because they don't have to sit at a booth all day. If you volunteer for a couple hours they only take 10% of what you make (15% if you don't volunteer).
And they have this great system set up for tracking people's purchases. I won't go into it here, but you can read about it on the web site.
Anyway, the show was this weekend, and it was so much fun to be a part of. (Both as a buyer and as a seller.) And to me it seems so unique that I wondered if there's anything like it elsewhere.

Post Subject: Craft Show Experience
Hi~
I know this question has a lot of variables, but how much inventory would you expect to need for a craft show. The one I am preparing for is a 2 days, 12 hours total show with medium traffic. My craft is patchwork throws, purses, and other little things ranging from $5.00 to $100.00. Is there any sort of standard for how much to make? I know it is desperately optimistic, but I don't want an empty booth and an apologetic smile on day 2.
I'm mostly looking for show success/horror stories....

I just had my first art/craft show in June and am planning for another in December. My show was only 7 hours 3pm-10pm.
I made 30 handbags, a dozen little zippered bags, 60 marble magents and like a couple dozen record bowls. I sold everything but 10 bags and 3 record bowls and a handful of magnets. I sold most of my stuff 2-3 hours into the show, my booth started to look whimpy and people would just walk on by. I think the key is to make enough so when stuff does sell your table still looks full.

Post Subject: do you market?
I'm participating in my first craft show next month. The organizers have really pumped me up, saying no one around here has sold goods like mine (baby-oriented stuff like slings, changing pads) and I ought to do well. I hope so. Still...I know how it is when you see something you like, you're not sure, you pass...then you wish you'd bought it.
So I want to have brochures done that people can take with them. I realize many will take one and then throw it away, but maybe it would make enough after-show sales to be worthwhile, especially since I am hoping to take custom orders on my kids' clothing.
I also set up a mailing list form that they can fill out and I can transfer into a mailing list program so that I can send out fliers for the next show I'm doing, any special offers for holidays or shipping, etc.
Does anyone here do this? Do you have advice? I don't want to spend a ton of money (I have graphic artist friends who will do the brochure design for me, but I will pay for printing) but I also don't want to be caught short if this turns out to be a good opportunity to get my name out there.

Post Subject: Craft Business Tips?
I've recently started a floral and home decor business. I have been selling on eBay, my website, and at craft shows. I have found it very hard to predict what people want to buy. I had early success selling fall wreaths and a few fall centerpieces. I started making items for the Christmas season and have had very few sales. I have been learning as I go but it can be very frustrating when you go to a craft show and only sell one item (it does not even cover the cost of the space at the show) while a person across or near you selling the same category of items but of lesser quality at higher prices does. I wanted to position myself to sell items that are unique and you would not find in Michaels or Joann’s, but it seems that is what people want to buy. I have a very hard time putting my name on something that I just do not think looks good. I am not saying that I do not make things that I would not personally buy for my home, but when I do, I make sure that it is of high quality and of impeccable design. Anyway, good luck to all of you. If you have any advice it is appreciated. My web address is: http://www.shopprettythings.com

Well I did it! and I even sold some stuff - yay! It was a very small 'craft' section of a summer festival in my home town. There isn't a lot of emphasis on the craft part, it is more about food and music so I was pretty pleased with the turnout. I sold 8 bags and the best part was that 2 of them were sold to people I don't know!! somehow it seems even better when it is someone that doesn't know me that buys them -know what I mean? 2 sold on friday and the other 6 on saturday.
On the other craft show thread at getcrafty someone recommended the craftshow 101 at loosetooth.com I can't tell you how helpful this site was in getting ready - becky has done a great job laying it all out!
http://www.loosetooth.com/Art/Work/renegade2003.htm
I was most happy with the banner for my biz name - of course the best idea came to me at the 11th hour (otherwise known as 12:30 am the night before). but it was great. I printed out charm school in size 700 (2 letters per page) on that iron on paper, then I ironed it flat onto the back of some great pink faux ultrasuede. I cut it out and then glued it pink side up onto some gorgeous vintage green cut velvet. Yum!! I don't have the picture anywhere but in one of my online files yet - If you want to see how it turned out drop me a line. It looked really good, If I do say so myself -esp. for the price!
Brandy's idea that worked best for me was to give them something to take away - I am too cheap to do buttons so I printed out little round stickers with a vintage image on them and my website addy printed around the outside. Avery does round circle stickers and they finally built some templates for them that ROCK! When the stickers first came out the template sucked -you could hardly do anything. People loved the stickers.
oh, and you know what was the weirdest part of the weekend? This guy that I lived with in college walked past with what appeared to be a significant other and their child - I haven't seen or heard from him in 15 years. You could have knocked me over with a feather. I don't think he saw me and I was far too shocked to say anything, but it sure was weird. (I left him, in case you were wondering ha!)
Now I need to clean my work room - holy shit what a mess!
thanks for listening

The acrylic paints I have claim to be indoor-outdoor and suitable for painting glass, but I've never tried it so I'm not sure how great it'll work. I saw a craft show on tv where they spray painted bottles with flat black paint, then painted-stamped tiny designs---but I think I'd like to be able to see into the genie bottle (maybe put a little velvety cushion on the bottom).
Don't you have to use paint formulated for glass? Like a baked enamel that you cure in the oven?
Guess I just don't want the paint to run, or to see my brush strokes.
I don't know how to 'seal' them, either. Is that necessary?
It won't be food safe but that 's ok cuz they're just for decoration.
Got any experience or advice?

I don't knit but I do crochet, and apparently it has the same "old-people-only" type of stereotype about it.
I was crocheting once at my booth at a craft show when a woman with a couple of kids came up to the booth. The woman tells the kids, "Look, that's crocheting. It's a lost art." Thanks!

Post Subject: Taggies
Does anyone know where I can find out how to make taggies? I saw them at a craft show and thought they were so cute but I didn't want to pay $20. for them.

yeah, i think knitting is far more popular than crocheting so it's considered more of a "old lady" craft these days. when people see me crochet, i get the "where's your rocker" comments whereas when i'm knitting, people tend to be more in awe than commenting that it's an old lady thing. but maybe it's because what i usually knit in public is with my DPNs and most non-kntting folk have never seen that....

DIY is a fairly "new" network (I believe it is in its 5th year) and it is growing fast. As far as the "I don't get the channel/cable provider" question goes, I really don't know much about that. I'm working as a producer for show content.
The network is just getting into shows that appeal to the hip faction of craftistas. 2006 will bring several shows that are not "lame," but actually rather AWESOME. Look for the upcoming show STYLELICIOUS! It features members of the Austin Craft Mafia in all their stunning glory making cool clothes and accessories. I think you'll dig it. (And the content is 22 minutes. That's pretty good for a half hour show.)
Anyway--this new craft show that I'm working on is NOT going to feature lame stuff! We don't want anything that would be considered "classic crafting." We want the edgy, strange and out of this world--so PLEASE, if you know someone, send them the info and have them e-mail me at NWhite@sdetv.com.
I'm 26 years old. My friends and I all craft. We do subversive cross-stitch, make clothes, read BUST and love to RAWK! I want a show I can be proud of and that my friends are going to like. No smiling bunnies or teddy bears. Promise.

Wondering what we would need from you?
--Each guest will need to be well-versed in the craft area they are presenting on the program. You shouldn’t submit projects that you’ve only done once or twice – we’re relying on you to know all about the craft area you’re presenting!
--The guest should be able to provide finished samples of the project(s) we’re making as well as additional examples of projects that could be made with similar techniques. Please note: guests cannot demonstrate copyrighted works by other designers – original designs only unless you have written permission from the copyright owner. The guest will also acquire materials and make and bring step-outs for the project(s).
--Because we only have one guest for the whole show, the guest needs to be able to present the how-tos of each project clearly to crafters of all skill levels – if you don’t like talking to crowds or getting your picture taken, this probably isn’t something you’ll enjoy.
--Instructions (along with any necessary patterns or templates) for the project(s), contact information for yourself, and other info (such as books you’ve written) that will be submitted to DIY for use on their website, www.diynetwork.com (go on over and check it out!).
--We’ll be taping these shows in Burbank, CA between August 30 and September 30, 2005 so you need to be available for a few days of traveling and taping during that time period.
Interested or know someone who might be? Just send along the following info and we’ll get in touch with you as soon as we can so we can talk to you about it in more detail.
E-MAIL YOUR ANSWERS TO: NWhite@sdetv.com
1. What’s your name and age?
2. Where do you live?
3. Please refer to the list above and let us know which of those topics you think you would fit into best (you can list as many as three categories).
4. Also, what kinds of projects have you created, and what sorts of materials do you like to work with?
5. Have you written any craft books? If so, tell us more about it/them!
6. Have you taught anyone else how to do any of your crafts? If so, please tell us more abut it your teaching experiences!
7. Have you been on television before? If so, what show(s) did you appear on and when?
8. Any other exciting or interesting tidbits of info we should know about you?
Thanks and we look forward to hearing from you!

Post Subject: Need An Easy Craft To Do In Front Of TV That I Can Sell
Hello-
I am brand new to this site and it looks like fun. Does anyone out there have a quick and easy craft I can do at night in front of the TV. I'd like to participate in a craft show at work this fall and I need little things to sell. I'd also like to give my kids something to do this summer so they can make a little Christmas money.
Thanks- Ann

I''m in (as I said on Vox). :)
Only objection is to the craft show and other stuff that involves money ''cause I just spent fifty bucks I don''t really have on fabric and a pattern. Haha.
I just need to be better about finishing things and not being so ADD when it comes to crafts

The stuff you bring to sell at a craft show is the stuff you consider to be the best of the best - and it's personal - becase you dreamed it up and made it yourself, so when people slag it in front of you it does sting.
I'll be the first to say that a lot of stuff that people sell at craft shows doesn't appeal to me one bit, but I would never say that in front of them. It doesn't matter anyway - they just have different taste than I do.
I think the best piece of craft fair etiquette I can reccommend for shoppers would be - be respectful. You're not at Wal-mart - a lot of time, personal creativity and effort went into everything you see. In a very real sense, people are offering things that are a part of themselves. Whatever the vendor has on the table is probably something they think is pretty terrific. They're proud of it. That's why they thought it was good enough to sell.
(I know I'm preachin' to the chior here - I think the within-earshot comments like "I could do a better job, and for less" come from folks who have never had the behind-the table experience.)
The worst thing ever at a craft show is when someone really digs your stuff and then the friend/mom/mother-in-law/husband comes up and says - "You're not gonna waste your money on that are you??"
A pal of mine just told me a story like that - she wanted to buy something at a booth and her friend teased her out of it saying it was crap - now the fair is over and she still wants it but it's too late. I feel bad for her - but I feel just as bad for the vendor who not only lost the sale but also had her stuff insulted!

Post Subject: Does it feel like Christmas yet?
Here in AZ, it is finally 55 degrees, yay!
A few people have put up their lights, by this weekend probably everyone will have. Every year I want to go all crazy and decorate but the days go by so fast. I wish we could all have the month of December off just to craft, shop, decorate and eat!
I don't feel "it" yet, am I alone? I want to feel it so bad! Maybe I need to go a house lights tour or something...
Edited to add: Ok, instead of complaining before it's even December 1st, I'm going to list things to help get in the mood.
- Wear a thick scarf stand outside and drink hot cocoa.
- Go to a holiday craft show (a cool one).
- Buy a couple poinsettias and put them in the entry way so I can see them as soon as I come in.
- Start thinking about my Christmas cards.
- Put up the tree!
- Watch A Charlie Brown Christmas.
- Put money in the Salvation Army tin.

Brandy, over at Loosetooth has a great craft show information page where she basically tells you about her day at the Renegade Craft Sale, what she did that was good, and what she would change next time. Also includes a list of things to bring. Very informative.
i've participated in a couple of craft events, most recently in Bazaar Bizarre West in L.A. (http://bazaarbizarrewest.org), and i used Brandy's craft show info to get a handle on what i would need to set up my table. it was VERY helpful. i have to say, i had more success at BBW than any other craft event i've participated in, and i think that was mostly due to the fact that the crowd and vendors were, for the most part, tuned in to the same frequency. plus, there was a great deal of advertisement before the show: lots of word-of-mouth, previews in the Times and the Weekly, and the reputation already built up by Bazaar Bizarre on the east coast. there were SO many great vendors, and SO many customers, it was non-stop pretty much all day. which was a very happy, lucky thing.

A few years ago at a craft show I saw a crafter selling pet clothes made from pieces of old shirts. Not very useful if you don't have a pet, of course.

I recently saw cool ornaments at a craft show. They were ordinary lightbulbs (in various shapes) painted in Christmas colors, be-glittered, and hung from string. You could string up a bunch of those.
I totally vote for decorating cookies. Decorating cookies is tons of fun.
