Post Subject: my first amigurumi
I wanted to make a small gift for a friend and was inspired by some of the patterns I saw on http://amigurumipatterns.blogspot.com. I have never crocheted anything other than a scarf so I was wary of trying but wow! It's so much easier and more fun than I thought it would be! My friend has a cat and mouse thing going on, so I used the mouse from http://amigurumipatterns.blogspot.com/2007/05/cat-mouse.html and found a little japanese-esque cat (appriopriate b/c my friend is 1/4 Japanese and the present is to welcome her back from travelling to interview for a position in Japan) from this website: http://katcrochet.com/minikitty.htm. I think the cat turned out looking really lopsided, but oh well. haha.

Post Subject: Help! I''m writing a paper on crafting!
I''ve been glued to getcrafty for a few weeks now (I was just on Craftster until I found these forums), and this is my first post (what better time to register than now!?!)
I''m a college student and a crafter, so when I was assigned a research paper with a topic of my choice - I chose to write about \"The resurgence of Handcrafting\"! My assignment requires that I do a few interviews to supplement my research, so who better to interview than all of you expert crafters?
So here are my interview questions, and I''d really appreciate anyone who could take the time to answer them!
* What do you know about the history of crafting? (ie the arts and crafts movement in America in the 1890-1930s, crafting in the 1940s during WWII, etc.)
*What crafts do you do? Where did you learn them?
*Why do you craft?
*How do you think the internet has affected the popularity of crafting?
*Are you male or female? Do you think crafting tends to be more feminist?
*Do you sell your crafts? If yes, why? And where do you sell? (Craft fairs, Etsy? etc.)
*Do you think certain crafts are generation specific? (In other words, are there crafts that people of younger generations do that people in older generations don''t? Or vice versa)
Thank you so much!! ^^

Post Subject: interesting article on crafting
this is in the new issue of an crafts industry newsletter (creative leisure news):
"There's a new trend emerging in craft design and it's not cute. It's fueled by a younger demographic, consumers looking to express their individuality rather than following preset rules, and they prefer a more sophisticated look. In other words, no smiling bunnies. Examples:
1. Two craft stores that are appealing directly to this new demographic are the Spark Crafts Café in suburban Boston (www.sparkcrafts.com) and Urban Arts + Crafts in Kansas City (http://urbanartsandcrafts.com).
2. Craftster (www.craftster.org). The site says, "Craftster is a forum for people who love to make things but who are not inspired by scrapbooking with die-cut teddy bears, cross-stitched home-sweet-home plaques, wooden boxes with ducks in bonnets painted on...."
3. Scrapbooking may be catching on, too. SOHO Publishing put out a call for "edgy and unconventional" layouts for a book, Scrap and the City ("for the thousands of stylish city-dwelling and hip country-living women who are turned off by scrapbooking’s good girl reputation"). For info, call Paul Gambino at 917-916-0521 or email gambinopaul@aol.com ... Darcy Miller, the editorial director of Martha Stewart Weddings, has published Our Wedding Scrapbook. "Aesthetically, what Miller does has little to do with the current scrapbooking trends and the kitsch-heavy industry it has spawned," wrote W magazine.
4. Get Crafty (www.getcrafty.com.) For insight on this new type of crafter, click on "Jean's Manifesto."
5. The Mar. 7 edition of Time, reported in CLN's previous issue, also gives a good analysis of the trend. Visit www.time.com and type Pretty Crafty in the search engine.)
6. Media. A new HGTV series, Crafters Coast to Coast, (www.hgtv.com/hgtv/shows_hcc2c) premiered recently and features a wide variety of non-cute projects. "Rather than bring artisans into our studio to share their ideas for viewers to try at home, we visit their homes and studios-wherever they may be. The result is a show that goes beyond "how-to" as we see how these crafters' personalities, lives, and communities influence their work." The projects are described as "cool," "hip," and "unique." (The series is aired almost daily at a variety of times. Check your local listings.) Notice the number of quick camera shots; it's crafts for the MTV generation.
(Note: HGTV is looking for designers to appear on the series. Email a recent picture of yourself smiling, images of your projects, contact info, location, and short bio to CoastToCoast@wellergrossman.com.)
This trend is having its effect on almost every product category. The yarn companies spurred the incredible resurgence of knitting and crochet by introducing new, stylish designs, but the changing demographics are affecting other categories, too.
Michelle Temares, one of the industry's best and most thoughtful designers, says, "I believe that this turn to individuality and self expression has been a significant contributing factor to the decline of craft categories such as counted cross stitch and decorative painting and the growth of categories such as scrapbooking and altered art. The former value and emphasize rote sameness while the latter recognize, encourage, and structurally support individual creativity and expression.
"Industry players who can recognize, synthesize, and decode these attitudes and trends will have the advantage in capturing new market share.""

In that this is my first go at solo design, I would love any and all input on the collection (even though I am actually a guy going crafty).

Post Subject: looking for participants in a study of crafts and loss
Hi,
I'm hoping to connect with fellow craftists who have used or are using crafts as a resource to deal with loss. I'm a long-standing craftist myself and have personally experienced the power of crafts (in my case, mostly knitting) in dealing with my own losses. I'd like to email or talk with others how have experienced the same. If you've had a loss (not just to death--it can be divorce or the end of a committed relationship, the breakup of a close friendship, maybe the loss of something more intangible) and are interested, I have a link to a description at http://mypage.iu.edu/~gilbertk//research.html
Just click on the link below Crafts as a Resource in Times of Loss and Crisis. I'm also more than happy to answer any questions you might have. Thanks!

not so much an 'ad' as a peeve of mine that 'crafts' aren't as well represented in art exhibitions - so when I learn of a good exhibit devoted to crafts I do like to let people know. For those in the Chicago area there is a large exhibit devoted to African pottery featuring objects from across the continent. It's called From Hearth to Altar and runs until February.
I'll include a link with more info and some images (about 1/2 way down the page).

Hello,
In August I'll move from Belgium to Lake Charles (or in the neighborhood, don't know exactly yet). My guy will work there, but I won't. So I will have plenty of time to practice a lot of crafts! ;-)
I'm very interested in ceramics.
I just finished an Art School in evening classes (7 years). So, I'm a big AMATEUR and would like to continue "turning" (don't know exactly how you call it in English, sorry). It won't be possible to ship all my stuff (because $$$), so that's why I'm looking for interesting tips in Louisiana, like:
where are the good craft shops? the training possibilities? nice people to meet (around crafts)? where are some crafty resources?
I hope someone can help me! ;-)
greeetz,
Karin

Post Subject: Help me and get a free website...
Hi,
I am new to the forum, found this site by accident, but I love it. I have been doing nearly every craft I could find for 30+ years.
I am also a webhost and designer, and have been considering setting up a hosting business just for art and crafts sites ...giving free or low cost sites to other arts/crafts people. This forum has reminded me how many of you there are out there, and how much fun you are. So...
My thought is to offer both normal webhosting and free "sub-domain" sites to those just getting started. The web address for a free site would be something like http://yourchoiceofnames.mydomain.com. Then, if anyone wanted their own domain name and private site, they could pay a small amount per month or per year and have a regular account. (My hosting, free or paid, offers not just webspace, but free installation of 60 plus scripts, from forums to list management, WYSIWYG webpage creators, photo galleries, chat, even full interactive membership websites that require no knowledge of HTML to set up, and more. See more about us here: http://www.aqualityhost.com )
My problem is that I can't decide on a domain name for the site. (Replacing "mydomain.com") Hence the free site offer. If you can suggest a good name that isn't already taken, I will give you a free hosting account, the full paid V350 package, for a year.
Any takers? You can email me privately if you want.

Post Subject: Kits for Crafts - all feedback is welcome!
We recently launched www.KitsForCrafts.com and would love to hear your feedback. Tell me what's good, tell me what's missing - any and all feedback is welcome!
I created Kits for Crafts to focus on promoting the craft of natural handmade skin care to children through exciting and educational kits. I really focused on the educational value of these kits both for young kids as well as older children who are able to do some research.
My primary goal is to instill in children the idea that handmade skin care products are superior to commercial, chemical products and will lead to a healthier lifestyle, and of course, to provide hours of exciting activity. My kids tested all the kits themselves.
So far, I've developed 31 fun kits including Chocolate Chip Bath Cookie (seems to be the favorite so far), Cooling Cucumber Mint Foot Scrub, Bruise Away Balm and Strawberries 'n Cream Milk Bath. Additionally, we offer an entire range of ingredients, bath accessories, equipment and packaging to inspire children to pursue further exploration of this craft for gift giving and personal use.
We got lucky after doing a press release in May. Platunum Television Group picked up our story and invited us to be featured as a "family craft" in their series "Today's Family" which will air during this holiday season on family/women's channels. We're really excited about it - just finished the shooting!
BUT.... I'm having a hard time getting the word out about the site and would love any marketing tips for a TIGHT budget you may have.
Thanks! I look forward to any comments and ideas!
Sincerely,
Kibby Mitra

BazBiz’s sponsorship and donations coordinator just dropped out, so now we need another.
I need someone reliable who can make a commitment. This is a mostly desk job and would be great for someone who surfs the web all day. Basically it would involve selling ads in our program/magazine to local businesses and soliciting donations for raffle prizes and underwriting of things like signage and stuff. Also setting up meetings with potential donors. The meetings would actually be attended by myself and the sponsorship coordinator if he/she had the time.
If anyone has any interest or any good leads please let me know ASAP
Yours,
Greg Der Ananian
Founder, Bazaar Bizarre
ps: Also we are still looking for a publicist... Here is the memo I drafted about it:
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Bazaar Bizarre started in 2001 in Boston as a “punk rock” crafts fair. I wanted to get together with other people who were rediscovering their crafty roots, but making staid traditions their own. From the outset, with almost zero publicity, we were huge. Same story in 2002. 2003 saw the dawn of our west coast event. Hosted in Hollywood we had nearly 3000 visitors over the course of the day. DJs, drag nuns, a cakewalk and a raffle in addition to all of the incredibly unique crafts made the day a hit.
As a result, in fact, I was approached by literary agent Marc Gerald and now have a book deal with Penguin.
This year we’ve added Cleveland to our crafty family and will continue to add new cities every year. We badly need a professional publicist to help us spread the word this year. We want to build on the momentum of our past successes and move forward. This year is especially important in terms of laying the groundwork for next years event in conjunction with the release of my book (also called Bazaar Bizarre).
Key publicity goals this year include local television coverage as well as print. National magazines including Budget Living and the Advocate will be featuring us as well, but we’d like to expand our national print base.
As of now, we are mainly looking for a local/regional publicist. Any national press obtained should of course focus on all three events, but emphasize L.A. In addition, local press should include a small mention of the other 2 cities.
We don’t have much of a budget, and all of us work on a volunteer basis, but we are sure shots when it comes to bartering. Just think... In exchange for your help you could be inundated with unique handmade art objects. Holiday shopping? Done!
If money is an absolute requirement, payment would not be possible until after the event in December.
We are getting bigger and bigger, and as we move towards becoming a nonprofit, there is a lot of potential for high visibility.
So... Can you help?
Best,
Greg Der Ananian
Founder, Bazaar Bizarre

Has anyone had experience embroidering with ribbon? If so, are there are special needles (larger eye?) or stitches that are preferable?

Does anyone here know about the anti-Bele Chere festival in Asheville? I've never been, but from what I hear Green Eggs & Jam (a music store on Lexington ave) has a ton of local indie/punk bands play. I was wondering if this anti-fest also included craft vendors. Does anyone know?
I think it'd be great to set up a table and sell affordable art/crafts since so much of the art at Bele Chere is inaccessible to many of the people living in Asheville.
Thanks for any suggestions!

Post Subject: Question about the scrapbooking industrie in USA
Dear,
I live in Europe, the Netherlands (Holland) and started a small business in scrapbooking (www.scrapenjoy.com just in Dutch). BUT because I want the interest of the 'generations X and Y' and not a targetgroup (old) houswifes, I want some advices how the scrapbookingbusiness or perhaps better word is memory crafting? is developing in the crafts 'business' in the USA.
1) could you advise me on some hot names or hip brands in the states.
2) titels of good hip/modern/funky consumer books
3) all information is welcome (sites etc.).
So I want to develop myself more in a funky/modern/hip crafty way working with scrapbooks (but not in the dull way)

Well, I've decided to hit it small and start selling my felt crafts (iPod cozies, change purses, pins/jewelry, scarves) and vamped-up vintage finds online, my motivation being that I want to donate a portion of profits to charity (not exactly planning to make big bucks here). Anyhow, I wanted to ask ye successful gals some questions.
-How do I find a market? The girls at school love my stuff, but that doesn't mean that it will appeal to everyone.
-How should I have customers pay? I was thinking paypal and checks, but....
-If I don't make much $, what must I report to the gov't? (live in US)
Thank you sososososososo much.

I'm in the process of building a whole new portal for my website. I'm going 'updated' and joining the rest of the world in PHP. I love what a body can do with this new tech language.
The new site is set to launch in about 2 weeks. In the meantime, I'm asking others to come help populate the site.
I've tied together several subjects, including crafts and crafting business.
You can submit your own articles, add your own website links, keep a journal, post in the new forums- all in all, make your presence known.
Come visit, join in, advertise yourself and help to populate this new portal.

As I'm now officially Older Than Dirt , I decided to go back to school to finish my BFA. I'm looking at 2 different local Universities..one where I started and all my credits are from both the BFA and completed BSN..the other one is here in my silly town.
My BFA credits are in Graphic Design/Illustration, but being older and wiser( read: more in tune with what I want to do vs. what's cool to the guys in the bands), I'm think of doing the BFA in Crafts! Textiles, glassblowing, metal smithing/jewelry, ceramics. Being post bacc, all my humanities should transfer, so it would just be studio classes.
Any thoughts? Considerations I'm missing? Advice????

Post Subject: Sewing in Chicagoland?
Hi there! I was wondering if there were any crafters/sewers in the Chicagoland area? I am 25, a new mother, and into crafts and sewing. Looking for others with same interests for possible meet-ups?
Also...I have an online baby boutique and I also sell fabric (Michael Miller, Alexander Henry, Amy Butler, etc.). Does anyone perhaps create diaper bags or other baby-related items? I do make many of the items that I sell myself (bibs, blankets, etc.) but am looking for someone to partner with for bags or other items, and I was hoping to find someone in the Chicago area. Maybe I am just looking for an excuse to converse with someone creative over the age of 1. ;-)
Thanks for your time! :-)

Hello!
Ok, this isn't anything to do with crafts (even tho I spin the Angora's wool that is in the flim and make soaps with the goats mom in the flim..lol..)
These two are best of buddies. I wanted to get this on flim for a while now (normally the goat let's the bunny out and I later find them running around our place together.) This time I let them out to play. They started to play a little rougher then I normally like so I stopped to put the bunny back. Of, course the goat went over to the bunny afterwards and just took a nap right next to her.
You can see the video I took on my blog here

Are you a craft diva with a flair for teaching? If so, lets talk. I am in the beginning phases of opening a sewing and craft school and craft supply boutique in Washington, DC. As i develop my business plan, i'd like to begin relationships with teachers that i will eventually hire as independent contractors to teach various classes at my lounge. I am interested in those with experience teaching crochet, knitting, sewing, embroidery/cross-stitch, quilting, paper crafts (including scapbooking and stamping), home dec, and any other unique craft. For my plan, i will need to have a list of qualified instructors and their expected fee per class. This is a good opportunity for up-and-coming designers or expert crafters with a talent for teaching. Unique crafters encouraged and photos of work are appreciated. Shoot me an email if you are interested or if you'd like more info.

An early warning for anyone in the Bristol, UK area- after a great Stitch n Bitch at here yesterday we have decided that we are going to hold a post-holiday season crafty stuff swap party. I know i've got a whole heap of things i've put aside 'just in case' and i also know that partners in craft Erin and Teacake have things in their stashes that I secretly covet- so what are we going to do about this? Well- sometime in the new year we are all getting together with our bits and bobs that don't quite do it for us in the crafty sense and we're going to go swap crazy- kind of a naked lady party of crafts. It will probably be on a Sunday when we are holding a Stitch and Bitch anyway- but keep an eye out for updates from me as we confirm things a bit more firmly.

There is still time to be a vendor at the Punk Rock Craft Fair in San Diego!
The Punk Rock Craft Fair is an extravaganza celebrating all that is fabulous and strange. It’s a two-day event that combines raw musical performances, underground arts and crafts, and side-show like attractions to generate a mind-blowing experience!
If your indie business would like to be a part of this ground-breaking event, please contact us at http://www.myspace.com/punkrockcraftfair or email penni@sandiegocraftmafia.com. APPLICATIONS ARE DUE JUNE 15, SO DON"T DELAY!!
Even if you are not in or around San Diego, you can still participate in the swag bag giveaways! We are looking for items that would be cool to get in a goodie bag (like pins, magnets, wristlettes, screen-printed patches, booklets, stickers, pendants, etc), donated by indie businesses! It's a great way to promote your business and get exposure--kinda like (almost) free advertising!
