I have a natural knee jerk reaction to the word craft. It makes me think of Church Basement craft fairs of my childhood...
I prefer textile arts, seemstress, or other more specific words.
However, since the word id defined as:
craft
n.
Skill in doing or making something, as in the arts; proficiency. See Synonyms at art1.
Skill in evasion or deception; guile.
An occupation or trade requiring manual dexterity or skilled artistry.
The membership of such an occupation or trade; guild.
pl. craft A boat, ship, or aircraft.
tr.v. craft·ed, craft·ing, crafts
To make by hand.
Usage Problem. To make or construct (something) in a manner suggesting great care or ingenuity: “It was not the Chamber of Commerce that crafted the public policies that have resulted in a $26 billion annual subvention to the farmers” (William F. Buckley, Jr.).
I am getting over my aversion to the word craft, but it is hard.

I have just been thinking about decorations- it is my first tree this year! I plan on making the glittery pine cones, and also quilled snowflakes. I don't know how popular quilling is any more, but it is long thin strips of paper, rolled and glued so that they stay in a coil, then pinched to make different shapes eg teardrops, ovals etc. I am goign to glue these together to make snowflake shapes then add sequins and a bit of glitter and hang from threads.
I am also going to try and recreate a beautiful ornament I saw years ago. A walnut shell that had been sprayed silver (they did the same in gold also) had a silver pipe cleaner twisted and glued to the top, then little white beads on wire twisted and added to the top, in the same sort of way you put a bow on a present. Then hung with silver thread. I have bought my first hot glue gun all ready for it!
I love all these crafty ideas for tree decorations...I think my list of crafts-to-make is going to grow!

my boyfriend absolutely supports my crafts, in fact he's usually the one that gives me the kick up the arse I need to get stuff done, and refuses to listen to me saying that I'm useless. It helps that he's a very creative person himself, of course, he's an art student and musician. In fact, sometimes I worry that it's me who doesn't support him enough in his creative talents, possibly because I get kind of intimidated by the fact that he's 'better than me'. But generally it's great being in a relationship where both partners are into making things-we have a house full of beautiful, individual stuff and we don't get bored. We almost always make each other gifts, and know that it will be appreciated rather than looked down on. For our anniversary last month, we decided to 'swap crafts' to make the gifts-ie, he had to sew me something, and I had to draw/paint something for him. It was really successful, although I did get a little jealous since he appears to be better with the sewing machine than I am, despite never having sewed anything before!
