Crafty Supply Swap Fundraiser 8/07
We’ve got one heck of a Crafty Supply Swap planned for you this time around!
We have local trading superstar Rosalie Gale of “bARTer Sauce” fame trading with us, Ginger from our fundraiser recipient Ginger’s Pet Rescue will be joining us to tell us about all the special doggies that need our help, we’re going to have a special networking table hosted by the Seattle Craft Mafia, and as usual there will be snacks galore! So join us for a fun filled afternoon of trading, networking, and snacking! And remember, we’re doing it for the doggies!
So… what IS the Crafty Supply Swap, you ask? Well it’s only Seattle’s funnest trading extravaganza ever! Remember when you bought a bunch of cool crafty stuff that you thought for sure you'd make into that super cool thing you had an idea for? But somehow, you never got around to making it. Now that cool crafty stuff is just collecting dust or getting shuffled from one storage bin to another. Face it, you're never gonna make that super cool thing.
So, what to do with all that crafty goodness? SWAP IT!!!!
Come for an afternoon of pre-holiday trading, chatting, snacking and fun!
What can you bring? Anything you've got!
*fabric remnants
*paper scraps
*leftover fragrance/essential oils
*old beads
*unused string, cord, ribbon
*outdated packaging materials
*wood chips
*recycled wrapping paper
*gift boxes/storage boxes
*jewelry findings
*knickknacks
*gizmos
*equipment/tools
Bring anything you have that you didn't get around to using and probably never will. Maybe someone else has something that you WILL use!
Help each other and yourselves by clearing out your old craft supplies and offering them up for grabs!
Have fun trading with other crafters. See old friends, make new friends, get cool stuff, and know that you are contributing to a good cause!
And speaking of causes, Ginger’s Pet Rescue (www.gingerspetrescue.org) is an amazing service that to date has saved 394 dogs’ lives, this year alone! Ginger specializes in death row dogs, those that are in immediate danger of being put down. Ginger will be on hand at the Crafty Supply Swap to talk about what she does and to answer any questions you might have. Ginger would appreciate doggie contributions of any kind that you can provide to help care for these rescued dogs.
bARTer Sauce will also be joining the Crafty Supply Swap this year with Saucey goodness for all. bARTer Sauce is a trading experiment for art and odd objects that was supposed to last one year -- but is already well on its way to year two. The basic idea was to start with one item, in this case, an old laptop, and trade it for something else. Then take what was gotten from the laptop and trade it for something different. And on and on and on.
Bring something you've made (or something weird that you want to get rid of) to the Crafty Supply Swap and trade with The Sauce You'll get a write up in the Sauce's weekly (or every other weekly) blog. All you need is the item, a witty (not required) story about the item or how you got it and the willingness to be photographed with The Sauce.
For more information about bARTer Sauce, visit: www.bartersauce.com. You'll find the items currently up for trade, a history of past trades and stories, as well as the rules for trading. You can also find Rosalie’s blog, where she occasionally writes up witty anecdotes about her trades, here: http://blog.myspace.com/Iloveunicornsmorethanyou
As if all this wasn’t enough, Seattle’s own Craft Mafia will be hosting a networking table just for YOU! There will be resource info, Q&A, and business ideas and info to help you with your crafty biz!
Snacks and beverages will also be provided to make the day just THAT much more festive!

Post Subject: Welcome new co-editors!!
I would like to welcome Christy Petterson and Nancy Flynn as the two new co-editors of getcrafty.com! Effective immediately, Nancy and Christy will be taking over Jean's previous role on get crafty.
W had big shoes to fill. First of all, thanks to Jean for helping us by recommending Nancy and Christy. Based on the getcrafty.com’s members’ feedback, it was important for us to continue Jean’s vision for this website, and Christy and Nancy, both long time committed members of getcrafty.com, will be fantastic co-editors. I would also like to thank all of the community members who have offered to help and made suggestions over the past week. The caliber and commitment of members of the getcrafty.com community never ceases to amaze me.
I know many of you are familiar with Nancy and Christy, but I thought I would post some more information just to give you a bit of background on both Nancy and Christy.
Nancy Flynn has been a member of Get Crafty since October 2004, and has written the Dilettante Crafter column since August of 2005. She credits Get Crafty with inspiring her to quit her day job and follow her dream of a more creative life. Thanks to the inspiration and support of the Get Crafty community she has written a craft book for teens that will be published in 2007 and has another in the works for 2008. She also designs a line of handbags (which she sells in local boutiques and craft fairs in Northern California) named after her Get Crafty handle belle epoque.
Craftiness and Christy Petterson go way back. In the 80s she constantly had an in-the-works friendship bracelet pinned to her jeans. Today she creates clothes and accessories for her line called ‘a bardis’ and plans the Indie Craft Experience with two other Atlanta designers. The Indie Craft Experience is a craft market and fashion show that takes place twice a year with participants from all over the country. Christy has been a member of Get Crafty since November of 2003 and has written a column on the site called “how to by ceebee” since August of 2005. She also travels to shows in other cities to sell her creations and you can come meet her at the Renegade Craft Fair in Chicago (September 16 + 17) and Crafty Bastards in D.C. (October 1). www.abardis.com
Please join me in wishing all the best to Christy and Nancy!

hey there,
in response to some recent complaints, i have created a new community guidelines page, which you can see by clicking here: http://www.getcrafty.com/home_community.php
**********
The Forum and Blog Codes of Honor
Here are the rules we live by here.
Get Crafty is a place for sharing your creativity, thoughts, dreams, plans, craft project updates or what you ate for breakfast. That said:
Please do not use your blog as an advertising tool. Even if your company is super-bitchen crafty-tastic, the blogs are meant to build community, not businesses. (We are working on a tool that can help you sell your stuff online called etsy.com, due to go live this summer.)
Please refrain from pornography, unless it is highly crafty.
Please do not use a flashing, animated avatar. It hurts our eyes.
Please do not post super-duper huge photos. It takes too long to download.
Please post your comments on other people's blogs and respond to forums. It's a nice thing to do.
Please have fun.
Moderators
There are a number of amazing moderators. Please respect, honor and worship them.
Forum Moderators
We love sarabell and are waiting for her bio! I will update this soon.
Craftista maka10 likes to describe her life as: WONDERFUL!
Amanda Rybin (aka for_esme) is an undergrad studying Art History and English, and her favorite creative activities include writing, cooking, knitting, and thrifting.
Blog Moderators

Post Subject: Craftland Craft Show!
Just wanted to spread the word about the Craftland craft show to all of the crafty folk on get crafty. Check it out!
Craftland is back for its third glittery year!
Applications are now being accepted for the 3rd Annual Craftland, a contemporary craft show in Providence, Rhode Island featuring an eclectic assortment of fine crafts and cutting-edge, quirky handmade items. Proceeds from Craftland benefit New Urban Arts www.newurbanarts.org , a free art studio program for Providence high school students. Craftland operates for five weeks in November and December at a retail space in Providence, Rhode Island and sells unique and unusual handmade items on consignment. Artist need not be present to sell their work. Artists drop off or ship their work to Craftland and Craftland displays and sells the work – like a consignment store or gallery. Artists receive 60% of the retail price on items sold, 30% goes to the cost of running the show, and 10% goes to New Urban Arts.
To download a Craftland Artists Application which includes all of the nitty gritty details please visit www.craftlandshow.com
Applications are due by September 10, 2004 POSTMARK DEADLINE
Most of the artists participating in Craftland live in New England, but we also accept work from artists throughout the United States. To keep Craftland fresh and irresistible, we seek a range of people to participate. Whether you have participated in craft shows before, are an art school student or have made nifty things but never sold them, we want to hear from you! Over 100 local and far away artists participated in Craftland 2003 -- teenagers to grandmothers, professionals to first-timers. We encourage artists to view Craftland as an opportunity for whimsical craft exploration. Some artists have created limited-edition new work exclusively for Craftland, and others have experimented with techniques outside their usual work (painters who made puppets, jewelers who made holiday ornaments, and chefs who made magnets). Other artists sell the prints, jewelry or books they produce year-round.
Craftland is about the love of making things, the pleasure of having one's own creative practice and the celebration of all things crafty. And it supports a great cause! Please share this information with anyone you know who might be interested in participating this year.
Thanks and Get Crafty!

howdy there crafters:)
just droppin a line to see if there are any crafty chica's on long island or in the area who could send me in the right direction to find some places or fairs to vend??? i know about the artists and fleas in brooklyn but i dont know anyone who has done the events and so i am hesitant to spend the limited funds that i have on a table fee and then not sell anything. that would be a bummer. i also heard about the brownstone fleas in brooklyn but again i dont know much about it and so i am at a standstill. and i keep wondering to myself... there's gotta be some crafty ladies on long island. there's a licrafters.com forum that i checked out and the people were nice but nothing came out of it. alas. im still without a venue and without the right people to start up a monthly or bi weekly crafty set up. i know a bunch of places we could have events and i make all kinds of urban crafty stuff. so anyone wanna try and do something with me or have any advice on what i should do? i appreciate all your help and i thank you all in advance:)

If you have a crafty business, blog, or etsy shop please add it to the existing thread: Crafty Business Links - list 'em here!.
This community is not about "hit and run" advertising - we all love to buy handmade stuff, but don't appreciate it when you just use our community as free advertising. We like to buy from other community members who have made an investment in this community.
The primary purpose of this forum is sharing your accomplishments and creating a community. Did you have an article published? Tell us about it! Did you get your pattern accepted by Knitty? Hey ladies!
I have been away from Get Crafty for soooo long (like the old days, old site). It is so nice to see everything so busy and happening around here! *smile* I am going to peek around more often again!
I just thought I would share my new illo & crafty blog, incase anyone is interested in peeking. I am throwing a scarf drive (all proceeds are going to my local woman's shelter (Edmonton, Alberta, Canada). Is anyone interested in knitting & donating a scarf to women in need? If so, feel free to contact me and I can tell you more info.
Hope I am not taking away from any other knitting for charity type drives on the go. I had a couple stitch and bitch nights last week that were super successful (I taught many gals to knit!)

Post Subject: Glitterati/get crafty webring update: PLEASE READ!
Hi everyone. I am the manageress of the glitterati/getcrafty webring which has been around for a few years now, and it is major need of some updating folks!
If you have a site on there, please go to ring surf, log in with your password, and make sure your listing is updated! (If you need your password sent to you email me at: webring@fivegallonbucket.net.)
I need to have a current URL for you, a current email, and you probably want to have a current description of your site up too! Also I need everyone to double check their source code and make sure they have their id number on the ring code (where it says id= usually)
If you aren't a member of get crafty or glitter anymore then you won't be reading this, obviously, but if you happen to know that someone isn't participating on get crafty (or glitter) anymore maybe you could give me a heads up so that I can take them off the ring. I have considered keeping people on there as honorary glitterati but I have decided not to. I really think the webring can be a nice resource, and I know people often want to "shop glitterati" so I want to keep the ring from being bloated. So, that being said, I am only going to keep sites on the ring that have the code up! Every site that doesn't have the ringcode will be taken off the ring, even if I know you are around get crafty. If you put the code back on your site please submit it again and I will get you on there.
And of course, if this is the first you have heard about the Glitterati webring, and you want to be on it, please feel free to submit your site here. http://www.fivegallonbucket.net/glitteratti.html
You can submit your web shop, blog, what have you. I usually go through and put new sites on the ring once a month, so please be patient.
I think that is everything. I am, of course, cross-posting this over at Supernaturale.
Thanks everybody!

Post Subject: Friend finder Austin Texas
Hey all Austinites! I am going to post here, figured I cant lose anything.
Im looking for a few friends or even one good one that shares the same things I do, values and such. I am in North Austin area, well Leander area actually. I moved back here 6 years ago.
I have had some good friends over the years, but moves, babies, have taken every single friend, best friends I had. And I am getting tired of meeting flakey people, who use you untill something better comes along. I would LOVE to find a good friend, best friend even, who shares the love of getting crafty, trying to juggle a family, make a biz happen, clean house, and go out everyonce in awile.
I have a family, with 2 kids, I am 28, well 29 on Saturday, I love getting crafty, I love and have animals, like going out when $ affords, I love to dance, country dancing is my favorite, and if you cant but want to learn, well I bet I can give a darn good try teaching you. But when $ is short, well getting together doing crafty stuff, watching movies with kids piled on laps, manicures, anything fun is good.
I have a few friends, who live in south Austin, and its just to hard to get together enough to really make a friendship grow. Im a faithful friend, always got your back, a shoulder to cry on, advice when asked for, an ear to listen, but I wear my heart on my sleeve, and most of the greatest friendships ive had have been soul mate types. Id love someone who when everyone is going out, but you or I couldnt, well, wed stay behind so no one feels left out and alone. Get what I am trying to say? All of my best friends have been Virgos, as am I. Im not into jealousy, spitefulness, worlds just too short for that. I am just looking for a fellow square peg in this round world.
SO if this is something that maybe calls to you, or youre just intrested in getting to know me better, let me know. I am not shallow, whats on the outside is no matter to me, I have tattoos and piercings, but go to church...
Send me an email at Intexas2stay@aol.com. You never know!

Post Subject: New Crafty TV show looking to cast guests.
Hi Crafty Peeps,
My name is Cathie Filian and I produce and co-host Creative Juice on DIY and HGTV. Our production company is looking for young adult & teen crafters for a new "untitled" craft show. This show will be guest based - so you could be the star of the show. :)
We are seeking crafty guests from all over the USA and will begin the process with DVD submissions. The DVD's are not for air on TV they are for casting purposes. Fear not if you don't have access to a video camera. Just send a photo of yourself (big Smile) holding or showing off your handmade items.
Here are a few guidelines:
You should have high energy and great style. Show off your style - flaunt it!
Your crafts should be cutting edge current - think Urban Outfitters or MTV!
You can make anything from room decor, jewelry, clothing, soap making, knitted and crochet goods, lip balm, art, etc. The most important thing is that you know your stuff and can explain how you make it in a clear and fun way.
Video Guidelines:
1.Have high energy and be yourself. State your name, where you are from, how long you have been crafting and what your craft project is. Try to hold your project in your hand or have it next to you and briefly explain to us how you made it. You can show a step or two on how you made it you want.
2.Try to keep the camera as smooth as possible (using a tripod helps) and make sure you have lots of light so we can see you.
3.Fashion tips for the camera: Please don't wear prints, all black (even if you are goth), white or red. Tattoos, elaborate hair dos, and punky attire are just fine.
4.Videos should be no longer than 3 minutes and should be submitted on DVD only. Tapes cannot be viewed. On the DVD please include your name, your craft, email, city, phone number and age if you are under 18.
Photo Guidelines:
1.Have a big smile in the photo. Try to hold your project in your hand or have it next to you. You can include a picture of you at a sewing machine or at your work station or in the process of making something.
2.Fashion tips for the camera: Please don't wear prints, all black (even if you are goth), white or red. Tattoos, elaborate hair dos, and punky attire are just fine.
3.Photos should be digital, high resolution and should be submitted in print and on a CD. On the back of the photo and on the CD please include your name, your craft, email, city, phone number and age if you are under 18.
Please mail to:

About the organizations:
The Goose Hollow Shelter
The Goose Hollow Family Shelter is a temporary emergency shelter for homeless families in the Portland metropolitan area. They take in anyone who has a child under the age of 18, as well as pregnant women. The shelter currently operates from November to May and is hoping to one day have the resources to stay open year round. In the evenings, they have “kid time” where volunteers lead the kids in various activities, one of which is crafting.
p:ear
http://www.pearmentor.org/
p:ear builds positive relationships with homeless and transitional youth through education, art and recreation to affirm personal worth and create more meaningful and healthier lives.
Community Action Organization
http://www.communityaction4u.org/
Community Action exists to ensure that low-income families have a place to turn for help as they strive to get back on their feet and achieve a better life. They offer the following services: A Kid’s Domain: Before and after school care, Early Head Start/Head Start Preschool, Energy and Emergency Services, Homeless and Housing Services, Opening Doors: Maternity outreach and pregnancy support.
Buckman SUN School
http://www.sunschools.org
http://www.buckmansite.teacherhosting.com
Buckman Arts Magnet Elementary School is one of the community schools serviced by the SUN Program (Schools Uniting Neighborhoods). The mission of the SUN program is to improve the lives of children, their families and the community through partnering with local school communities to extend the school day with a variety of classes and develop schools as “community centers” in their neighborhoods. We are specifically asking for donations for their Winter Craft & Gift-making Night on Wednesday December 15th at Buckman Elementary School. Families are invited to return to school in the evening and create unique handmade gifts for the holidays with the help of parent volulteers and local artists (including the girls of Super Crafty!)
One more organization collecting craft supplies and handmade gifts is La Casa de las Madres, a San Francisco-based group that offers emergency services to women and their children escaping domestic violence.
They have women of all ages there, and children from newborn to age 18, so items of all sizes and colors would be welcome. They would take blankets, scarves, hats, mittens, gloves - all the standard handmade stuff. If you do not knit or crochet, you are welcome to sew any donations. Machine washable is good, so is warm wool, but they are not picky and would take anything. You are welcome to wrap stuff if you want, but please put a tag on the outside indicating what is inside, and the size, etc., and attaching a tag indicating the fabric content, care instructions, and maybe a little pick-me-up message would be wonderful.
They are also looking for donations of art and craft supplies - fabric, yarn, needles, paper, crayons, hooks, glue, markers, etc. NO magazines, they already have plenty.
http://www.lacasa.org/index.html
http://www.lacasa.org/wish_list.html
About La Casa: La Casa de las Madres offers emergency residential shelter to battered women and their children while providing counseling, family-based services and referrals. Our Emergency Crisis Shelter has the capacity to shelter and support 35 women and children per night. La Casa's downtown San Francisco office houses our two 24-hour Crisis Phone Lines, a Drop-In Counseling Center, the Teen Intervention & Prevention Program, and the Community Education & Outreach Program. All services are offered free-of-charge in English and Spanish.
Please send donations directly to the shelter by December 17:
La Casa de las Madres
1850 Mission Street, Suite B
San Francisco, CA 94103
PDX Super Crafty won’t be delivering these gifts, we’re just handling donations for the Portland organizations! Thanks for your generosity this holiday season!

I am moving back to Miami after several years spent in the craft-tastic town of Portland, Oregon. Portlanders are a crafty people and I have been bitten by the bug, particularly the knitting bug. I'd like to take some of that with me to the Sunshine State but unfortunately I no longer know many people in the area. If there are any craftistas in Miami (especially knitters but crafts in general work for me) that know of crafty groups or are interested in starting one, let me know.
Gracias!

Hi!!! I'm looking for fun and crafty people in GR to go to thrift stores, antique stores and garage sales with and to just hang out with. I’m 31. I went to school for writing and am working (slowly) on a book, but have been craving the crafty side of life. I know almost nothing about sewing or knitting, but have been drooling over the things you guys have made. This site is inspiring me to learn. Think I will have to get a book or take a class soon. Anyway, drop me a line if interested in being e-pals, friends, or taking a class together. :)

Post Subject: Hello Columbus, OH!
Hey Columbus Crafters,
I've been gone from GetCrafty for a while, and central Ohio even longer. (Grew up in Lancaster, moved to NC at age 12, now live in NYC.) I'm flying into Columbus this Saturday afternoon and have about 5 hours to bum around downtown before my parents pick me up. I plan to be a tourist for the day (Statehouse exhibit, Seurat topiary garden, you get the picture). Anything I must see? Crafty stuff I'll kick myself for missing? I'll be on foot, so it should be walking distance of downtown or easily negotiable by bus for an out-of-towner. The last time I was in Columbus my Girl Scout troop camped overnight at COSI. I still have the Mt. St. Helen souvenir ash. Ah, golden memories of childhood.
Thanks in advance, crafty Buckeyes!
Cheers,

Hi- I am a writer for Blogging Baby, and I am doing a feature on gifts for kids/parents that were made by independent designers/artists/craftspeople. I'm not as crafty as I wish I was, but I thought I'd spread the word about this scene as much as possible because I really respect it. Blogging Baby gets 30,000 hits a day and I'm hoping to help some good people make some money.
I have published a draft of this Shopping Guide on my blog: Sweet Juniper (guide is here).
I would REALLY love anyone's input about other crafty folk who sell their baby/kid/parent related wares online via their own websites, or through etsy if they also have their own websites or blogs with good pictures. I am not trying to be exclusive, but I've exhausted what I could come up with without mor ehelp from the experts!
Thanks,

An early warning for anyone in the Bristol, UK area- after a great Stitch n Bitch at here yesterday we have decided that we are going to hold a post-holiday season crafty stuff swap party. I know i've got a whole heap of things i've put aside 'just in case' and i also know that partners in craft Erin and Teacake have things in their stashes that I secretly covet- so what are we going to do about this? Well- sometime in the new year we are all getting together with our bits and bobs that don't quite do it for us in the crafty sense and we're going to go swap crazy- kind of a naked lady party of crafts. It will probably be on a Sunday when we are holding a Stitch and Bitch anyway- but keep an eye out for updates from me as we confirm things a bit more firmly.

Hi All,
New here (as if post count didn't give that one away). Have seen comments about this site on Craftster, but never visited. I've been on that site for a few years (itscribe) and most often contribute by helping others to improve their crafty websites and give some suggestions on crochet every now and again. I hope to do that here too.
I love the Open Letter To... thread. Every forum should have one of those.
I am a reformed computer nerd and am now a website content writer by trade, love to craft (crochet, cross stitch, sew, quilt, and whatever else looks interesting), and have been craft-deprived working on my websites.
My latest site is CraftyTips.com an arts and crafts directory. It's only getting started, so I would like to invite you to take a look around. In exchange for a crafty tip, craft-related website owners can get backlinks to their site for free.
Regards,
michele

I'd like to let y'all know about a craft-related e-mail list I'm starting up, and to invite you to send in your submissions and sign up to receive it. This is of course most relevant for Toronto peeps, but if you visit sometimes or would liked to be plugged into local craft affairs in other places, it could be for you too.
Toronto Craft Alert will be a sporadic mail out that keeps Toronto crafters (and fans of craft) in the loop about craft-related happenings in the city. A submission-driven project, the Alert will also be a means through which you can get the word out about your upcoming studio sale/ stich'n'bitch/ craft fair/gallery show and so on. A companion blog ( http://torontocraftalert.blogspot.com/) will log this info as well as providing links to local craft businesses, museums, projects, craftblogs, supply shops, etc. Visit the blog now to read the first post tipping you off on some hot craft action happening right now.
Some things you can expect learn about in a mailout/on the blog:
*Upcoming craft shows (for vendors and shoppers)
*Local craft/DIY-related projects and meetups
*Gallery and museum exhibits of a crafty nature
*Workshops and lectures
*Crafty resources in the city (e.g. hot yarn shops, screenprinting studios, fabric stores, etc.)
*Toronto area businesses and stores that carry local stuff to help you buy local
If you are interested in receiving Toronto Craft Alert mail outs, send an email (w/ "subscribe" in the subject heading) to: torontocraftalert@gmail.com. You can unsubscribe, no hard feelings, anytime with an "unsubscribe" in the subject line.
If you have something to contribute (e.g. event listing (your own or someone else's), hot craft tip, local business profile) or suggestions about what type of things should be included in the Alert, you can write me at the above address with your goods at any time. Don't be shy!
Please share the love and pass this on to other crafthounds that you know.
Thanks for reading,
xjenx

Post Subject: Bazaar Bizarre - help needed!
Bazaar Bizarre is looking for help for this year's events (see memos from the founder below). we're looking forward to another successful event this year!
anyone?
bueller?
bueller?
please contact greg at blackietuttle at sbcglobal dot net if you can do it!
and if you can't, then how's about you come to the bazaar and do some shopping? ;-) thanks!
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
BazBiz’s sponsorship and donations coordinator just dropped out, so now we need another.
I need someone reliable who can make a commitment. This is a mostly desk job and would be great for someone who surfs the web all day. Basically it would involve selling ads in our program/magazine to local businesses and soliciting donations for raffle prizes and underwriting of things like signage and stuff. Also setting up meetings with potential donors. The meetings would actually be attended by myself and the sponsorship coordinator if he/she had the time.
If anyone has any interest or any good leads please let me know ASAP
Yours,
Greg Der Ananian
Founder, Bazaar Bizarre
ps: Also we are still looking for a publicist... Here is the memo I drafted about it:
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Bazaar Bizarre started in 2001 in Boston as a “punk rock” crafts fair. I wanted to get together with other people who were rediscovering their crafty roots, but making staid traditions their own. From the outset, with almost zero publicity, we were huge. Same story in 2002. 2003 saw the dawn of our west coast event. Hosted in Hollywood we had nearly 3000 visitors over the course of the day. DJs, drag nuns, a cakewalk and a raffle in addition to all of the incredibly unique crafts made the day a hit.
As a result, in fact, I was approached by literary agent Marc Gerald and now have a book deal with Penguin.
This year we’ve added Cleveland to our crafty family and will continue to add new cities every year. We badly need a professional publicist to help us spread the word this year. We want to build on the momentum of our past successes and move forward. This year is especially important in terms of laying the groundwork for next years event in conjunction with the release of my book (also called Bazaar Bizarre).
Key publicity goals this year include local television coverage as well as print. National magazines including Budget Living and the Advocate will be featuring us as well, but we’d like to expand our national print base.
As of now, we are mainly looking for a local/regional publicist. Any national press obtained should of course focus on all three events, but emphasize L.A. In addition, local press should include a small mention of the other 2 cities.
We don’t have much of a budget, and all of us work on a volunteer basis, but we are sure shots when it comes to bartering. Just think... In exchange for your help you could be inundated with unique handmade art objects. Holiday shopping? Done!
If money is an absolute requirement, payment would not be possible until after the event in December.
We are getting bigger and bigger, and as we move towards becoming a nonprofit, there is a lot of potential for high visibility.
So... Can you help?
Best,
Greg Der Ananian
Founder, Bazaar Bizarre

Post Subject: interesting article on crafting
this is in the new issue of an crafts industry newsletter (creative leisure news):
"There's a new trend emerging in craft design and it's not cute. It's fueled by a younger demographic, consumers looking to express their individuality rather than following preset rules, and they prefer a more sophisticated look. In other words, no smiling bunnies. Examples:
1. Two craft stores that are appealing directly to this new demographic are the Spark Crafts Café in suburban Boston (www.sparkcrafts.com) and Urban Arts + Crafts in Kansas City (http://urbanartsandcrafts.com).
2. Craftster (www.craftster.org). The site says, "Craftster is a forum for people who love to make things but who are not inspired by scrapbooking with die-cut teddy bears, cross-stitched home-sweet-home plaques, wooden boxes with ducks in bonnets painted on...."
3. Scrapbooking may be catching on, too. SOHO Publishing put out a call for "edgy and unconventional" layouts for a book, Scrap and the City ("for the thousands of stylish city-dwelling and hip country-living women who are turned off by scrapbooking’s good girl reputation"). For info, call Paul Gambino at 917-916-0521 or email gambinopaul@aol.com ... Darcy Miller, the editorial director of Martha Stewart Weddings, has published Our Wedding Scrapbook. "Aesthetically, what Miller does has little to do with the current scrapbooking trends and the kitsch-heavy industry it has spawned," wrote W magazine.
4. Get Crafty (www.getcrafty.com.) For insight on this new type of crafter, click on "Jean's Manifesto."
5. The Mar. 7 edition of Time, reported in CLN's previous issue, also gives a good analysis of the trend. Visit www.time.com and type Pretty Crafty in the search engine.)
6. Media. A new HGTV series, Crafters Coast to Coast, (www.hgtv.com/hgtv/shows_hcc2c) premiered recently and features a wide variety of non-cute projects. "Rather than bring artisans into our studio to share their ideas for viewers to try at home, we visit their homes and studios-wherever they may be. The result is a show that goes beyond "how-to" as we see how these crafters' personalities, lives, and communities influence their work." The projects are described as "cool," "hip," and "unique." (The series is aired almost daily at a variety of times. Check your local listings.) Notice the number of quick camera shots; it's crafts for the MTV generation.
(Note: HGTV is looking for designers to appear on the series. Email a recent picture of yourself smiling, images of your projects, contact info, location, and short bio to CoastToCoast@wellergrossman.com.)
This trend is having its effect on almost every product category. The yarn companies spurred the incredible resurgence of knitting and crochet by introducing new, stylish designs, but the changing demographics are affecting other categories, too.
Michelle Temares, one of the industry's best and most thoughtful designers, says, "I believe that this turn to individuality and self expression has been a significant contributing factor to the decline of craft categories such as counted cross stitch and decorative painting and the growth of categories such as scrapbooking and altered art. The former value and emphasize rote sameness while the latter recognize, encourage, and structurally support individual creativity and expression.
"Industry players who can recognize, synthesize, and decode these attitudes and trends will have the advantage in capturing new market share.""

Post Subject: One Yard Wonders - call for submissions
Hey there, Seamster Extraordinaire!
We are excited to invite you to contribute to our upcoming book entitled 101 One-Yard Wonders. Inspired by the success of the One-Skein Wonders series for knitters and crocheters, we are expanding this approach to new, exciting projects for sewing enthusiasts like you! With this book, we are setting out to fill a need that so many of us have: what to do with that single yard of special, coveted fabric you bought on impulse.
For this collection, we're focusing on projects that take no more than one yard of fabric to complete. Yes, you can feel free to add trims, zippers, velcro, buttons, interfacing -- whatever additional stash stuff & notions might be necessary to complete the project. We only ask that your project uses one-- and only one--yard of a single fabric. Sew and no-sew projects both gladly considered.
We invite you to contribute your original designs for home decorating items, baby items, personal accessories, toys, garments (for men, women, and children), outdoors, pets, seasonal projects ... whatever! The categories are open ended, and the possibilities are limitless! We are pleased to be able to offer compensation to designers whose projects are selected. The deadline for submissions is August 31, 2008. Projects will be considered and selected as we receive them, so try to get them in sooner rather than later. The only stipulation is that your original designs may not have been previously published in a book or anthology.
If you would like to participate, you have a couple of different ways to submit your project idea(s)--the more the merrier!
1) If you have a completed project, send some good-quality photos of the item, along with a detailed description and the required submission information listed below, to oneyardwonders@gmail.com by August 31, 2008. Be sure to include your full name, email address(es), daytime and evening phone numbers, and mailing address. A short bio of yourself is optional, but encouraged.
You can also mail these to us at:
One Yard Wonders
c/o Crafty Planet
2833 Johnson St. NE
Minneapolis, MN 55418
OR
2) if your project is just an idea right now, that's OK too. Send us a sketch of your proposed project, along with a detailed description (both as detailed as you can possibly manage) and the required submission information listed below, to oneyardwonders@gmail.com by August 31, 2008.
If we select your design....
1) We will either request your actual, original sample from the photos you submitted, or you will be provided with the editors' choice of fabric in order to produce a sample, which will be photographed for the book and kept for a tour and trunk shows.
2) You will also receive a letter of agreement and consent form asking for the one-time right to publish YOUR pattern in One-Yard Wonders.
3) Upon completion of the sample, instructions, letter of agreement, and consent form you will be paid for your submission.
4) In the published book, you will receive credit, along with information about your business, if applicable.
5) You will be one of the first to receive a complimentary copy of the published book.
Remember, deadline is August 31, 2008.
Please provide as much of the following information as possible with your submission:
(mail, email, or use our online submission form)
http://www.craftyplanet.com/oneyardwonders/submissionform.htm
Personal Info --
Name
Business Name (if applicable)
Address
Phone number
E-mail address
Website
Pattern Info --
Name/Type of Project
Fabric Weight/type (woven, knit, lightweight, heavyweight, etc.)
Width (in inches) of the fabric yardage (e.g., 44"/45", 54", 60")
Complete Materials list (i.e., elastic, ric rac, etc.)
Other special equipment required?
Pattern Pieces (number, size)
Special Layout Information for your pattern pieces
If already available, step-by-step instructions (please use as many pages as necessary, and you are encouraged to include step-by-step illustrations to accompany your instructions)
(Seam Allowance should conform to 1/2" standard)
Has your pattern been previously published? Is it currently or has it previously been available for sale? Describe. Please note that this will not disqualify you.
If you send the completed item as your submission, we regret that we cannot return items that are not selected unless you include a self-addressed stamped envelope with your submission. Please note that selected items will not be returned.
We're hoping very much that you will want to be part of first One-Yard Wonder book, and look forward to hearing from you! Let us know if you have any questions, as well.
With best wishes,
Patricia Hoskins, Editor, One-Yard Wonders
