Have you checked out http://www.sublimestitching.com for some cool embroidered portraits?
Just bought an embroidery kit by her published by Chronicles which has some funky patterns in it - I am a dabbler, I dabble in everything ;-)
Although it is knitting check out the Joey Ramone bag in the coolest book called 'Stitch'N'Bitch Nation' - think you can find a pic somewhere online though not sure where right at the moment*

Here's this year's prize gift: http://www.asseenontv.com/prod-pages/chef_wizard.html?gid=KITCHEN
Umm, huh? What can you do with these geezers that you couldn't do with a pair of tongs? Weird gift indeed.
I can't complain though, I had a really good gift year. My family did a crafty christmas, we all had to make something or spend under $5, as most of us are the opposite to that well-known phrase 'time poor and cash rich'. So I got yummy homemade raspberry vinegar, turkish delight, etc. It's good to have people who appreciate homemade stuff.
My boy's family generally give more expensive, store bought stuff. He bought all that for them and gave it from both of us, but I also made some foodie treats. I was a bit worried that they'd think they were crappy gifts, but you should have seen the amazed looks on their faces that I'd MADE toffee and shortbread! So yeah, very satisfying all round. Sorry!
Um, weird gifts though. One year when I was about fourteen I got three pairs of undies from my aunt and uncle who didn't know me too well and obviously wanted to cover all the bases. So one pair had holly hobbie or something on the front and would have been great for a ten year old, one pair were normal but nice pink briefs, and the last were bright red itchy nylon and lace that screamed kmart style tramp. My family killed themselves laughing.
