Post Subject: Christmas Crafting
Helloo people... apologies if there are already threads like this, but I can't seem to find any!
Also dunno if this is the right forum for this post, but I'm sure the mods can move it if not...
I've done semi-crafty christmases before, but this year I'm trying to have as hand-made a christmas as possible.
This means I'm starting now! I'd never get everything finished otherwise.
so far i've made one of a pair of fingerless gloves (the lace-up ones from the Alterknits book)...
I've a long way to go! I'm planning on making:
A poodle wine-bottle cosy (from Erika Knight's New Knits)
Three pairs of baby/toddler slippers
Some notebooks
A customised tee
A knit doll... either Cap'n Jack Sparrow or Spike from Buffy.. Haven't decided yet!
Some scrappy sideways knit scarves
Possibly some other stuff too... aargh! I'm going to be busy!
What are your favourite crafty gifts to make?
What do you do when people don't appreciate handmade?
What are you making this year?
When do you start for christmas?

Though I've not worked with shrinky-dink material before, I'm going to make personalized gift tags that the recipient can use on luggage afterwards.
This also makes fun dog tags!
I think I'm getting a nephew for Christmas - although he won't be here for Halloween, I knit him a lil' devil hat this weekend. I'm also working on a pair of socks for his birthmom and a matching hat for him. But those will all be gifted before Christmas. I'm going to try and knit a little sweater for him for Christmas. And maybe decorate some onesies with freezer paper stencils. (Can you tell I'm excited to be an aunt?)
I suspect I'll do a bit of holiday baking and cardmaking. I'm not sure who else will be getting crafty gifts. My Dad is the only family member who hasn't gotten a hand knit gift. I may try to make him a scarf if I can find a pattern I would like knitting that won't actually look hand knit. (I don't think that would be a selling point for him)
My family is often less than enthused about my crafted presents. I knit a lace scarf for my mom last year and bought her a matching tshirt (tshirt, blazer, scarf and jeans being her weekend uniform) - she raved about the tshirt. ugh.
For the most part, I won't make you something again if you make it clear that you prefer store bought - or I'll try to stick to smaller handmade items that I make more for my enjoyment than theirs.
I guess I'll just channel my craftiness into the nephew, who won't be able to voice any objections for a few years.

Does anybody have good advice for crafty gifts for showers other than the "Baby Blanket" that I know someone else will always make? I have one to go to in April and I wanted to give the girl something unique. Maybe someone who is pregnant can tell me what they would really want? I was thinking about some kind of homeade photo album/babybook. Ideas?

sarabell-- are you doing some of your fabulous scupley work for your ornaments? or is it top secret?
i'm making paper mache balls that i will decoupage. always go into mass production. don't really need to this year due to family-changing circumstances.... but can't just make a few. so i'm thinking of putting some up on etsy since i have a tree's worth of ornaments that i've been making over the years. plus it would be nice to have a little $$ to at least purchase gift-making supplies.
and men are aways darn hard to craft for, I find. there are only so many hats, scarves, and hand sewn boxer shorts a girl can make. i wish i could craft a video game or electronic gadget of some kind.
i have the hardest time with making man gifts, too. for my father, especially. i saw something, possibly on craftster, that was a cool gadget that someone crafted. it was a computer mouse made from an old school nintendo paddle. but that would definitely require far more techiness than i posess. anyone have any ideas for crafty gifts for the older workaholic man that's not into golf or fishing?!?

Post Subject: crafty boyfriend gifts
Since my boyfriend and I started dating about a year and a half ago I've bombarded him with so many cheesy crafty gifts, but he always loves them. We're kinda cheese balls so it's fun to give to someone who appriciates, you know?
Anyhow, here are some things I made that might inspire you:
-For xmas last year I wrote and illustrated a little childrens-style story book about how we fell in love and cute stuff we did together
-Bought one of those picture frames with 9 spaces for pics and filled it with picture of us, and then stuck fortunes on the frame sort of coresponding to each picture that I had saved from all the times we ate Chinese together
-Made a pillow using a pillow case (sewed one side and stuffed it) that I had ironed picture of us on...the front had little picture of pieces of me, like a picture of my eyes, then a picture of my mouth, and my hands, my belly, and stuff, then the the words "you make me" then on the back it had a pic of both of us together and it said "whole" above it
-Ordered a tank top that said "Nick and Cari fell in love in Virginia" with a pic of the state on it, then it had an inside joke on the back...obviously, the tank was for me, but it was just cute to suprise him by wearing it
-Made a list: "18 things i love about you" and wrote it out in pretty handwriting on a big piece of paper (could be framed if you wanted)
-Bought a sleek black frame, then collected four picture of us kissing, and printed them out in black and white and put them in the frame
-Sometimes I'll randomly bake him a cake and decorate it funny with like inside jokes or something on it (i have this sort of fear of clowns, and he always teases me about it, so i made a chocolate cake and bought those little decorations from the grocery store that have little clowns and letters, and i put clowns on the cake and spelled out "fuck the clowns!"
-Actually one really cute thing he did for MY last birthday was a really good idea that maybe you could incorprate somehow to fit you, but he and i have this sort of joke that everything we need in life starts with the letter S...(i.e. sleep, shower, sandwhich, spooning, shots, etc) so he got all these little gift bags and in each one was a card that said for example "Shower" and in the bag he put like shower gel, a loofa, and lotion...then for like "Shots" he bought be a variety of shot glasses...obviously, it's a simple idea and simple gifts but the thought was really cute.
Anyhow, I've written a lot so hope this isn't TOO MUCH INFO! And it's funny that now that i try to remember all the stuff I've made, I feel like I can't think of anything!
But hope maybe it will inspire those of you looking to get crafty for christmas (wow that sounds geekish, huh? :) ) If you have any questions or want other ideas feel free to email me though.
