Post Subject: Church of Craft in Portland, OR - August Meeting!
The August Church of Craft meeting is Sunday, August 20th. Usual time, 11:30 - 2:30, and usual place - Rimsky Korsacoffee House, 707 SE 12th (at Alder). If you're forwarding this to someone who's never been before, it's the big, old red house at the corner of SE 12th and Alder. There is no sign out front.
Our craft class for August is interesting and different. Some nice folks from Pendleton Woolen Mills will be teaching us how to crochet rugs from woolen mill selvages.
What the heck does this mean?
Well, when woolen fabrics of all kinds are cut and manufactured into blankets and clothing, the selvages are the leftover edges of the fabric. They are long, long strips with fring-ey edges, and they come in all kinds of colors.
These selvages lend themselves very well to crochet, and they make a wonderful, soft, fuzzy rug. (Or, you can also braid them into rugs!) A great way to make use of what would otherwise be wasted.
**If you don't know how to crochet, don't worry. The class will also cover basic crochet.**
If you'd like to participate in this class, please email sisterdg@churchofcraft.org for a supply list, or to reserve a $6.00 kit.
Church of Craft is a nondenominational group of people who love to make stuff. More info at www.churchofcraft.org.

Thought you would want to know about this new book: Sweaterbabe.com's Fabulous Flirty Crochet. It is written by a young woman in Los Angeles who sees more than granny squares when you think of crochet. Very cute, fitted, stylish designs such as you would find in a high end boutique. AND with the added bonus of pattern stitch diagrams so you can visualize how each row is worked and know that you are doing it right. Check it out. ArtMaven

Post Subject: Hello from North Carolina
Hi All,
New here (as if post count didn't give that one away). Have seen comments about this site on Craftster, but never visited. I've been on that site for a few years (itscribe) and most often contribute by helping others to improve their crafty websites and give some suggestions on crochet every now and again. I hope to do that here too.
I love the Open Letter To... thread. Every forum should have one of those.
I am a reformed computer nerd and am now a website content writer by trade, love to craft (crochet, cross stitch, sew, quilt, and whatever else looks interesting), and have been craft-deprived working on my websites.
My latest site is CraftyTips.com an arts and crafts directory. It's only getting started, so I would like to invite you to take a look around. In exchange for a crafty tip, craft-related website owners can get backlinks to their site for free.
Regards,

I recently moved to College Park, MD, and would love to join or form a crafting group. I''m car-free, so I can''t manage the Baltimore or NoVa groups--is there anyone out there nearer to me (Greenbelt, Cheverly, Bowie, Beltsville, Silver Spring, Northeast DC)?
I make jewelry (beading, wire, and metal work), stationery (stamping, printing, collage), and recently learned to crochet and knit. I''d be interested in learning just about any craft, and I''d be happy to teach anything I know. I would be able to host gatherings, or we could find a Metro-accessible coffeeshop or restaurant.

I would love to get together with other crafters, especially if they do something I don't know how to do yet.
My current obsessions are cross stitch (first and forever), hypertufa (lightweight concrete creation), and polymer clay (haven't done as much as I would have liked, but can always pick it back up.)
I am taking a fused glass workshop this Sunday, so I'll probably be hooked on that too....
I would love to learn to crochet and braid/hook rugs if there's anyone out there who would like to get together.
I live in the Albuquerque area, but am willing to travel...

I came across a charity while surfing the internet the other day. From what I can understand, it's a project where people all over the world crochet/knit/sew pads/cushions/mats for the cages of animals in shelters or foster homes. I've felt an increasing desire to try to help a charity somehow. I've been out of work for over a month now & I'm almost out of money. So, a monetary donation is out of the question. But I was thinking that between my love of crafting, my love for animals & my desire to help out, maybe this would be just the thing for me. I was just wondering if anyone else has had any dealings with this kind of thing so that I could get some information. Have a crafty day!

I've written my first ever crochet tutorial on my blog (in English at that) and I would like to know if it's clear. It's not a big thing or super original, but as I often have problems with stitch to stitch, row to row 'this is the way and nothing else' decriptions, I made an attempt to explain how I worked out how to make a perfect flat round for myself. This also means that there ARE several options, so if you're afraid to make your own choices or experiment a bit on your own, this tutorial is not for you ;)
I'm really curious to hear what you think of my sort of loose way of writing a tutorial. Please be honest, please be critical.
The address is in my sig. Find the tutorial at the bottom of the Queensday-post of 9/29.
Thanks in advance!

Are you a craft diva with a flair for teaching? If so, lets talk. I am in the beginning phases of opening a sewing and craft school and craft supply boutique in Washington, DC. As i develop my business plan, i'd like to begin relationships with teachers that i will eventually hire as independent contractors to teach various classes at my lounge. I am interested in those with experience teaching crochet, knitting, sewing, embroidery/cross-stitch, quilting, paper crafts (including scapbooking and stamping), home dec, and any other unique craft. For my plan, i will need to have a list of qualified instructors and their expected fee per class. This is a good opportunity for up-and-coming designers or expert crafters with a talent for teaching. Unique crafters encouraged and photos of work are appreciated. Shoot me an email if you are interested or if you'd like more info.

Post Subject: craft workshop Sun, Aug 1st @ Ladyfest Bay Area (California)
i'm sure most of you know that this weekend is the second Ladyfest Bay Area. I taught a workshop in 2002 at the previous Ladyfest on using recycled materials in art to create shrines. This year, we are again trying to help people see alternative paths to art - being creative without an art-school budget. Our prototype projects are books made out of matchbooks, tins, and other ordinary objects reframed as narrative containers.
i hope some of you can make it to the workshop! i *think* it is a $3-5 sliding scale charge. Ladyfest is a fundraiser for two really important local women's art groups. See http://www.ladyfestbayarea.org/beneficiaries.html for details.
creating without consuming will be 1:45 p.m. - 3:15 p.m. on sunday, august 1st. it will be held at everrett middle school, at 450 church st. i suggest arriving at 1:30 to get your ticket and get settled before the workshop starts. since we only have 90 minutes, we have to start right away! http://www.ladyfestbayarea.org/venues.html
also, i will be bringing some scissors, glues, etc, but if you have scissors to bring with you, it will make your craft time even more enjoyable!
for your other crafty interests, there is DIY Beginner Crochet, from 12-1:30 on sunday, august 1st.

Post Subject: AD: Yarn, Knitting Needles, Trim at Manufacturer's Prices
Hi everyone,
I'm working with my friend Jill Bauman, CEO of MarketMakers who produced and marketed knitting designer Suss Cousins' Suss Knit Kits.
In the course of developing Suss Knit Kits (from designer Suss Cousins)
we have amassed a large quantity of high quality, non-branded bamboo
needles, crochet hooks, tapestry needles and point protectors that we
would like to offer to you at the manufacturer's price.
For shop owners who give classes, this would be a great way to offer
your students good quality needles and accessories as part of their
introduction to knitting without the high cost. Or, you could make your
own knitting kits using these accessories, as well.
We are selling these items in bundles and also have trims (e.g. buttons
and purse handles) and some beautiful yarn available. The prices are
fabulous and I suspect our stock will not last long.
Our website contains photos and prices of all of the items we are
offering.
Please click on this link to view our products:
http://www.sussknitkits.com/parts/
There is also a Purchase Order you can print out and fax to us.
Please feel free to email me with any questions you have.
Thanks a bunch!

Post Subject: KNitting a crafty City
Knitting exhibition
We need lots of submissions so get thinking and knitting - and pass it on if you're a member of a knitting or crocheting group.
Knitting exhibition in Bristol
What: An exhibition of knitting and crochet inspired by architecture. This exhibition is part of architecture week (www.architectureweek.org.uk), a prestigious national event.
Details: Work can be 2D or 3D, a sculpture, a wearable garment or a wall hanging (or any other category you can come up with). It could be an entire building or a tiny detail, a knitted architect’s plan or a crumbling ruin or any other knitted or crocheted item directly inspired by architecture. Be as imaginative as you like, the only constraint is that your object must be knitted or crocheted (although it doesn’t need to be made from yarn). Objects can be machine knitted or handmade.
When: 10th - 26th June 2005
Where: The Here Gallery (http://sparror.cubecinema.com/here/mainmenu.html) is an innovative artist-run space that shows local, national and international artists.
Costs: there are no exhibition charges or fees for this show but the Here gallery does take a 40% commission on any work sold. If your work is for sale, please include the price (and remember to allow for the commission).
Proposals: Please contact Kirsty Hall (kirstyhall@blueyonder.co.uk or 0117 909 3462) with details of what you wish to make (including rough dimensions). Images of previous work or pictures of the work in progress would be helpful but are not essential.
Deadline for proposals: 3rd May 2005
Deadline for arrival of completed work: 31st May 2005 (please don't apply if you can't manage this second deadline).

Submission Call – Knit Graffiti Book
In the hands of guerrilla street artists, yarn graffiti snakes around telephone posts, through barbed wire fences, and over abandoned cars. Originally created by a crew in Texas, knit graffiti has become an international movement embraced by crafters of all ages and nationalities. Yarn Bombing: The Art of Knit Graffiti is a book about the history of yarn graffiti in urban spaces and future plans for world yarn domination, and will teach knitters how they can join the revolution.
Are you a knitter or crochetier? Do you design (or want to design) unusual pieces of street art out of yarn?
If so, you should design a pattern for Yarn Bombing: The Art of Knit Graffiti, to be published by Arsenal Pulp Press in fall 2009.
A DIY guide to the art of yarn graffiti and a history of hand-crafted textile street art, Yarn-Bombing will feature patterns such as street-smart disguises, useful wearable tools like gloves and tool belts, street art such as knit car cozies, bike covers and headlight toques, and outdoor installations such as crochet shawls for leafy trees. The sky’s the limit as long as it’s knit or crocheted! Projects should be fun, colorful and a little bit wacky.
Designers are asked to submit a sketch and detailed description of their project, along with a brief bio, by the submission deadline of May 30, 2008.
There is no entry fee, and you are encouraged to submit multiple designs. Please include your complete contact information (email and mailing addresses) with your submission. Hard-copy submissions will not be returned unless an SASE or International Mailing Coupon is provided.
Digital sketches (under 2MB) can be emailed to mandy@yarnbombing.com, or hard copy sketches can be mailed to:
Leanne Prain
203-884 Bute Street
Vancouver, BC
Canada V6E 1Y5
You will be notified via email if your design has been selected for publication. Selected designs will need to be knit or crocheted by their designers over the months of June-August, and mailed to the publisher for photography and editing by August 30, 2008. Patterns and any accompanying diagrams must be mailed to mandy@yarnbombing.com by the same date. Designers who are chosen to participate will receive the yarn necessary to complete their project, an honorarium, a free copy of the book, and credit for taking part in the book.
For more information, please visit Arsenal Pulp Press (arsenalpulp.com) or the Yarn Bombing Blog (yarnbombing.com).
If you have any questions or concerns regarding submissions, please contact Leanne (leanne@yarnbombing.com) or Mandy (mandy@yarnbombing.com)

Post Subject: New Crafty TV show looking to cast guests.
Hi Crafty Peeps,
My name is Cathie Filian and I produce and co-host Creative Juice on DIY and HGTV. Our production company is looking for young adult & teen crafters for a new "untitled" craft show. This show will be guest based - so you could be the star of the show. :)
We are seeking crafty guests from all over the USA and will begin the process with DVD submissions. The DVD's are not for air on TV they are for casting purposes. Fear not if you don't have access to a video camera. Just send a photo of yourself (big Smile) holding or showing off your handmade items.
Here are a few guidelines:
You should have high energy and great style. Show off your style - flaunt it!
Your crafts should be cutting edge current - think Urban Outfitters or MTV!
You can make anything from room decor, jewelry, clothing, soap making, knitted and crochet goods, lip balm, art, etc. The most important thing is that you know your stuff and can explain how you make it in a clear and fun way.
Video Guidelines:
1.Have high energy and be yourself. State your name, where you are from, how long you have been crafting and what your craft project is. Try to hold your project in your hand or have it next to you and briefly explain to us how you made it. You can show a step or two on how you made it you want.
2.Try to keep the camera as smooth as possible (using a tripod helps) and make sure you have lots of light so we can see you.
3.Fashion tips for the camera: Please don't wear prints, all black (even if you are goth), white or red. Tattoos, elaborate hair dos, and punky attire are just fine.
4.Videos should be no longer than 3 minutes and should be submitted on DVD only. Tapes cannot be viewed. On the DVD please include your name, your craft, email, city, phone number and age if you are under 18.
Photo Guidelines:
1.Have a big smile in the photo. Try to hold your project in your hand or have it next to you. You can include a picture of you at a sewing machine or at your work station or in the process of making something.
2.Fashion tips for the camera: Please don't wear prints, all black (even if you are goth), white or red. Tattoos, elaborate hair dos, and punky attire are just fine.
3.Photos should be digital, high resolution and should be submitted in print and on a CD. On the back of the photo and on the CD please include your name, your craft, email, city, phone number and age if you are under 18.
Please mail to:

Post Subject: interesting article on crafting
this is in the new issue of an crafts industry newsletter (creative leisure news):
"There's a new trend emerging in craft design and it's not cute. It's fueled by a younger demographic, consumers looking to express their individuality rather than following preset rules, and they prefer a more sophisticated look. In other words, no smiling bunnies. Examples:
1. Two craft stores that are appealing directly to this new demographic are the Spark Crafts Café in suburban Boston (www.sparkcrafts.com) and Urban Arts + Crafts in Kansas City (http://urbanartsandcrafts.com).
2. Craftster (www.craftster.org). The site says, "Craftster is a forum for people who love to make things but who are not inspired by scrapbooking with die-cut teddy bears, cross-stitched home-sweet-home plaques, wooden boxes with ducks in bonnets painted on...."
3. Scrapbooking may be catching on, too. SOHO Publishing put out a call for "edgy and unconventional" layouts for a book, Scrap and the City ("for the thousands of stylish city-dwelling and hip country-living women who are turned off by scrapbooking’s good girl reputation"). For info, call Paul Gambino at 917-916-0521 or email gambinopaul@aol.com ... Darcy Miller, the editorial director of Martha Stewart Weddings, has published Our Wedding Scrapbook. "Aesthetically, what Miller does has little to do with the current scrapbooking trends and the kitsch-heavy industry it has spawned," wrote W magazine.
4. Get Crafty (www.getcrafty.com.) For insight on this new type of crafter, click on "Jean's Manifesto."
5. The Mar. 7 edition of Time, reported in CLN's previous issue, also gives a good analysis of the trend. Visit www.time.com and type Pretty Crafty in the search engine.)
6. Media. A new HGTV series, Crafters Coast to Coast, (www.hgtv.com/hgtv/shows_hcc2c) premiered recently and features a wide variety of non-cute projects. "Rather than bring artisans into our studio to share their ideas for viewers to try at home, we visit their homes and studios-wherever they may be. The result is a show that goes beyond "how-to" as we see how these crafters' personalities, lives, and communities influence their work." The projects are described as "cool," "hip," and "unique." (The series is aired almost daily at a variety of times. Check your local listings.) Notice the number of quick camera shots; it's crafts for the MTV generation.
(Note: HGTV is looking for designers to appear on the series. Email a recent picture of yourself smiling, images of your projects, contact info, location, and short bio to CoastToCoast@wellergrossman.com.)
This trend is having its effect on almost every product category. The yarn companies spurred the incredible resurgence of knitting and crochet by introducing new, stylish designs, but the changing demographics are affecting other categories, too.
Michelle Temares, one of the industry's best and most thoughtful designers, says, "I believe that this turn to individuality and self expression has been a significant contributing factor to the decline of craft categories such as counted cross stitch and decorative painting and the growth of categories such as scrapbooking and altered art. The former value and emphasize rote sameness while the latter recognize, encourage, and structurally support individual creativity and expression.
"Industry players who can recognize, synthesize, and decode these attitudes and trends will have the advantage in capturing new market share.""

About the organizations:
The Goose Hollow Shelter
The Goose Hollow Family Shelter is a temporary emergency shelter for homeless families in the Portland metropolitan area. They take in anyone who has a child under the age of 18, as well as pregnant women. The shelter currently operates from November to May and is hoping to one day have the resources to stay open year round. In the evenings, they have “kid time” where volunteers lead the kids in various activities, one of which is crafting.
p:ear
http://www.pearmentor.org/
p:ear builds positive relationships with homeless and transitional youth through education, art and recreation to affirm personal worth and create more meaningful and healthier lives.
Community Action Organization
http://www.communityaction4u.org/
Community Action exists to ensure that low-income families have a place to turn for help as they strive to get back on their feet and achieve a better life. They offer the following services: A Kid’s Domain: Before and after school care, Early Head Start/Head Start Preschool, Energy and Emergency Services, Homeless and Housing Services, Opening Doors: Maternity outreach and pregnancy support.
Buckman SUN School
http://www.sunschools.org
http://www.buckmansite.teacherhosting.com
Buckman Arts Magnet Elementary School is one of the community schools serviced by the SUN Program (Schools Uniting Neighborhoods). The mission of the SUN program is to improve the lives of children, their families and the community through partnering with local school communities to extend the school day with a variety of classes and develop schools as “community centers” in their neighborhoods. We are specifically asking for donations for their Winter Craft & Gift-making Night on Wednesday December 15th at Buckman Elementary School. Families are invited to return to school in the evening and create unique handmade gifts for the holidays with the help of parent volulteers and local artists (including the girls of Super Crafty!)
One more organization collecting craft supplies and handmade gifts is La Casa de las Madres, a San Francisco-based group that offers emergency services to women and their children escaping domestic violence.
They have women of all ages there, and children from newborn to age 18, so items of all sizes and colors would be welcome. They would take blankets, scarves, hats, mittens, gloves - all the standard handmade stuff. If you do not knit or crochet, you are welcome to sew any donations. Machine washable is good, so is warm wool, but they are not picky and would take anything. You are welcome to wrap stuff if you want, but please put a tag on the outside indicating what is inside, and the size, etc., and attaching a tag indicating the fabric content, care instructions, and maybe a little pick-me-up message would be wonderful.
They are also looking for donations of art and craft supplies - fabric, yarn, needles, paper, crayons, hooks, glue, markers, etc. NO magazines, they already have plenty.
http://www.lacasa.org/index.html
http://www.lacasa.org/wish_list.html
About La Casa: La Casa de las Madres offers emergency residential shelter to battered women and their children while providing counseling, family-based services and referrals. Our Emergency Crisis Shelter has the capacity to shelter and support 35 women and children per night. La Casa's downtown San Francisco office houses our two 24-hour Crisis Phone Lines, a Drop-In Counseling Center, the Teen Intervention & Prevention Program, and the Community Education & Outreach Program. All services are offered free-of-charge in English and Spanish.
Please send donations directly to the shelter by December 17:
La Casa de las Madres
1850 Mission Street, Suite B
San Francisco, CA 94103
PDX Super Crafty won’t be delivering these gifts, we’re just handling donations for the Portland organizations! Thanks for your generosity this holiday season!

Post Subject: I need crochet helping
I''m not completely new at crocheting but I still have a few things to learn. I''m trying to make a teddy bear for a friend of mine who is having a baby and I cant seem to get the first few rows of the pattern right. The first thing you start on is the nose which is just a circle. However, at the end of each round it never tells me to turn or anything like that, so I''ve just been going around and around. My only problem is I am now on the 8th round and I have more stitches than what it calls for. All the other rounds were done correctly. I just dont know why I have extra stitches that need to be worked, but with no instruction to work them, just to start the next round.
This is how the pattern follows
round 1: chain 2. 6 single crochets in 2nd chain from hook
DID THAT
Round 2: Work 2 single crochets in each single crochet around (12 stitches)
DID THAT
Round 3: Single crochet in each stitch around (repeat for rows 4, 5 & 6)
DID THAT
Round 7: (2 single crochet in next single crochet) Repeat 6 times. Single crochet in remaining 6 single crochets (18 stitches)
DID THAT
Now here is where I''m getting messed up
Round 8: (Single crochet in next single crochet, 2 single crochet in next single crochet) repeat all around (24 stitches)
Now when I get to the point where I have made 24 stitches I have 3 stitches still left over. I thought that maybe the pattern had a typo, but when I did the extra three stitches and started round 9, i ended up with 7 more stitches than I was suppose to at the end of that round.
Round 9: (Single crochet in each of the next two single crochet, 2 single crochet in next crochet) repeat around (32 stitches)
If anyone could help me I would much appreciate it. I will also send you a copy of the full pattern if it would help any.
Thank you again,
Ashley

It seems like there's a mistake in the instructions for round 8. If you do:
Round 8: (Single crochet in each of the next two single crochet, 2 single crochet in next crochet) repeat around (24 stitches)
Round 9: (Single crochet in each of the next two single crochet, 2 single crochet in next crochet) repeat around (32 stitches)
your round 9 should end up correct.

Post Subject: HELP! I need an online source for bulk craft supplies!
I have just submitted a proposal to our local summer school program to teach two classes - crochet and embroidery - this summer to kids ages 9 through 13. I am supposed to purchase the special supplies ahead of time.
When I updated my Netscape, my bookmark list of craft suppliers (along with all my other bookmarks) disappeared. I had at least one that sold 5 or more crochet hooks of one size for a bulk rate. Can anyone here send me a link for suppliers that do this sort of thing? Thank you!

Post Subject: Joining back post double crochet rows in the round?
I'm trying to write a pattern that involves joining back post double crochet rows in the round. The problem is, that the way I do it leaves holes. I start a round with a ch2, and then back post double crochet all the way around, and then i will back post double crochet the ch2 just like it was a dc. Is this wrong?
I know it would be easier and prettier if i just spiraled the rows instead of joining, but i'm trying to be all fancy-pants about writing my first pattern. Is this just how it should be done? Just spiral it?

I can't help with the link, but try this. Find the tie-off thread at the very bottom of the sweater and cut any knots. Then just start unraveling, making a small ball as you go.
You'll have to do each section separately, but you can join them with the bind-off row.
Once you have each section to the right length, you can bind off the regular way, or, if you have crochet hooks, crochet the edge.
Not sure this will help, but that's how I'd do it.

This is a fun thread! I can sew, make patterns, crosshatch, make beaded jewelry, make felt appliques, draw, paint, write prose and poetry, make soaps, take art photographs, make stuffed animals, quilt, and make jewelry by using repurposed found vintage jewelry findings.
I can't knit or crochet, though. Sometimes I want to learn, but I think another craft obsession is one too many. :)

I started this wonderful world of craft making by teaching myself how to crochet, next came knitting which I’m still learning and not very good at LOL. Next on the horizon I believe it’s going to be tatting or macramé… haven’t decided which will come next but creating crafts not only keeps you busy but does brighten up your wardrobe, your house and you never run out of gifts for others!
How many crafts do you know? And do you have a favorite?

Hello everyone:
I'm back to share a craft after a long absence but am feeling well now. I finally got my recycled plastic hobo handbag done along with the free crochet pattern written up. Check it out.
http://www.myrecycledbags.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/brownhobo.JPG
This crochet pattern is a variation of Dao's Nordstrom Hobo Bag but is done in plastic bag yarn or plarn. The stitches are a bit different but the look is very similar. It's also lined and has a magnetic clasp for a closure. The free pattern link is found here. http://www.myrecycledbags.com/2008/05/16/recycled-plastic-hobo-handbag/

Post Subject: measurements for a child's sweater?
I found a helpful chart of shild's measurements -
http://www.fibergypsy.com/common/children.shtml
My question is - Say for a size 4 sweater, the chest measurement is 23", then the front and the back of the sweater should each measure half 23, which is 11 1/2, PLUS 1," 1 1/2," 2," or what?
My crochet stitches are larger than the guage, longer but not taller, and I'd rather adapt the patteren rather than switch to a smaller crochet hook.
Thanks, Brendajean

Post Subject: How to creat a quilt from crochet blocks for a baby
Hi
I need some advice. My grandmother made some crocheted quilt blocks for my son about 36 years ago. They have never been put into a quilt, he is about to become a father for the first time. It will be her great great grandson.
My problem is that they are crochet and never been blocked. They measure on the average about 10 inches X 8 inches. There are 13 blocks. I don't have the time to make plain crocheted blocks as spacers and I'm sure that my blocks would not match my grandmother's. Additionally, I want to minimize places for little fingers to get caught.
I need suggestions on how to mount them (?) or how to space them with fluffly blocks inbetween with a quilt back (?) or any ideas that any of you may have, I want this quilt to be around for a long time.
Thank you...

Honestly, I don't know of any "famous" crafty people. So my heros are the people who taught me, or encouraged me. Number one on this list is our own moderator, artgeek, who is always showing me some sort of cool thing she made, and who's been very supportive of my interests in a variety of crafts. She also completely "bah"ed my feeling that I wasn't crafty enough for this forum, and I'm glad she did. I wouldn't have thought of cooking and gardening as crafty, and I've always felt that since I'm following someone else's pattern in cross-stitch, I'm not that crafty. Still, I keep learning new things (like crochet).
My friend Ginger, who taught me how to crochet and tried to teach me how to sew. The only downside is that I was so bad at sewing that she's totally given up on me, and won't give me a "refresher" course in crochet!
Finally, my friend Judy. She's an amazing gardener, who's always helping me figure out how to make my plants do well. I had an amazing container garden this year, and in no small part due to her advice. Plus, she's going to coach me on growing winter spinach!

Post Subject: Crocheting Dolls - a question about the necks
I am teaching a class on crochet this summer to 9-13YO kids, and I'd like one of the projects to be a simple doll - four long tubes for the limbs, one fat tube for the body, a very short tube and a ball for the neck and head. The entire doll is about a foot long/tall. The head on the one I've made flops unattractively. (And yes, I made the doll without a pattern.) I'd like some suggestions as to how to crochet, sew or stuff the head to the body so that the flopping is minimal. Any ideas?

Over at not martha (http://megan.scatterbrain.org/notmartha/archive/2004_05_01_index.html#108511288056721006), Megan's discussing how Marge Simpson knits:
So, every time I see Marge on The Simpsons knitting she is using two long crochet hooks. She holds the needles like pencils pointed down at her lap and pulls the yarn up to her. I have seen someone knitting (with knitting needles and in real life) like this so the technique is strange but not incorrect. Are Marge's crochet hooks just an animator not quite knowing what they are doing, or is this some rare knitting techinique I am unaware of? Is it a style of crochet?
and there's a long discussion in the comments. Do any craftistas knit upside down? (I don't.)

are those directions for crochet? They are pretty easy, but a bit tricky in that it can be kinda unwieldy, what with a big crochet hook, and working around the strap.
Have you ever crochet around something before? You might want to practice crocheting around a plain pen first, to get the idea down, before you move onto the thong.
You have the slip knot on your crochet hook, hold it in front of the thong, hold the yarn in your other hand behind the thong strap, with the yarn going underneath the strap. Reach the hook over the top of the strap to grab the yarn, bringing it back to the front of the strap to make the stitch.
You'll need to stop every once in a while to smush the stitches up close to each other. Giving you good coverage of the strap, and allowing more room to make more stitches.
Hope this helps some!

I read about this glass ceiling and wasn't surprised, that's from my own experience. I guess we just lack confidence. I have to say it's not my path (and I'm not hampered by kids or family). I went on that road once and could perhaps have taken the position of my manager when he retired, if during the seven years or so I was his assistant I had acted with more confidence and authority. But I just silently backed him up and corrected HIS mistakes and nobody new. But when I made a mistake I thought: you see, I'm not good enough. I'm not a leader. Well, after he retired they reorganised the department and my function became redundant. They gave me a job I hated and so I looked around and I found free lance work as a translator elsewhere and I kept a part time job at my old company, just for security. I'm happy because now I'm doing work that really makes me happy and the part time job is just a two days a week nuisance. The good thing about it is that since about two years the manager is a woman! It feels so much better. We talk about crochet and crafting during breaks!
I read in a Dutch newspaper that in Sweden (I think it's Sweden but Scandinavia for sure) by LAW companies must have at least 40 % women in their boards. If they don't follow up the government closes the company, period! Could someone point that out to Hillary? I'm all for her, though I doubt it if she has a chance to win the elections even if SHE gets to be the candidate.

Posted by ada on 2004-12-16 04:47:54
Post Subject: Crocheting chaos
From the Guardian (newspaper) online:
Scientists crochet chaos
Donald MacLeod
Thursday December 16, 2004
The Guardian
As if Christmas wasn't chaotic enough, a couple of mathematicians at Bristol University are suggesting you crochet your very own model of chaos. The result should be something bizarrely like a large Christmas decoration - unless of course your crocheting skills aren't up to it, in which case your chaos will just look a bit of a mess.
Hinke Osinga and Bernd Krauskopf, of the university's department of engineering mathematics, have published their crochet pattern in the current issue of the Mathematical Intelligencer, basing it on the Lorenz equations that describe the nature of chaotic systems - such as the weather or a turbulent river.
Dr Osinga explained: "Imagine a leaf floating in a turbulent river and consider how it passes either to the left or to the right around a rock somewhere downstream. Those special leaves that end up clinging to the rock must have followed a very unique path in the water. Each stitch in the crochet pattern represents a single point that ends up at the rock."
Together, all the points (stitches) define a complicated surface, according to the Lorenz equations. The two academics have developed a method to describe such surfaces using a computer. After months of staring at animations on a screen, they suddenly realised that, in fact, their computations had naturally generated crochet instructions.
Dr Osinga, who learnt to crochet at the age of seven, rose to the challenge of making pattern called the Lorenz manifold. "The computer-generated crochet instructions were remarkable.
"Simply by looking at the real-life surface I would never have designed it the way the computer did. After all those months of trying to create it on screen, it was fascinating to see the surface grow under my own hands," she said.
"And it was truly amazing to see a floppy object fall into its desired shape when it was mounted with steel wire," Professor Krauskopf added.
The final result consisted of 25,511 crochet stitches and took Dr Osinga about 85 hours to complete. It now hangs in their house as a Christmas decoration.
They insist it wasn't just done for fun. The pair say their work gives much-needed insight into how chaos arises and is organised in systems as diverse as chemical reactions, biological networks and even your kitchen mixer. Their crocheted model, called the Lorenz manifold, is a very helpful tool for understanding and explaining the dynamics of the Lorenz system.
If you would like to crochet your own Lorenz manifold in time for Christmas, the pattern and mounting instructions are available online at www.enm.bris.ac.uk/anm/preprints/2004r03.html

Thusfar I have commercial patterns on the sewing one, but I''m considering removing them (though it would reduce the list greatly, and I like listing the small commercial pattern designers, and if I list them then why not the big companies? No decision yet). Anyway. Yes. Maybe you''ll see something you like, and maybe you know a good place to go to find patterns/tutorials that I''ve missed and can point me in the right direction.

Anyways, I'm not a knitter or a crocheter, but I do cross stitch and really enjoy it when I find time for it. I'm also getting into origami, however, I'm not very good at it yet.

even if it's on <a href=http://www.digitalgravel.com/itemdetails.cfm?prod=5485&cat=9&vndr=1010">Digital Gravel</a> which i really tend to like. That's a scarf that any of us could probobly make with the quickness. I imagine the material retail would cost less than that.
Maybe I should be happy that you can buy crochet items like <a href="http://www.digitalgravel.com/itemdetails.cfm?prod=5487&cat=3&vndr=1010">these hats</a> at major places. i guess i am. You can buy art from major places, why not craft?
Plus, I guess I do get kinda happy, when scrolling past shirt after shirt with screenprinting (which i can't/don't do yet), i see something that i could do myself.

Take a trip to your local craft store and wander the aisles, I bet you'll come up with all kinds of neat things :)
If you knit or crochet, try a new yarn, maybe something for yourself - or get a super head start on holiday presents and do some small projects like hats, scarves or dishcloths.
