Have your friend talk to the managers of local fabric and craft stores. Often places have left over or surplus items that they throw away instead of sending back to the factory.
Perhaps they'll sell it to her for really cheap or even give things away.

I'm sorry....I'm laughing so hard, that I almost fell out of my chair! That is a great story...and I only laugh so hard because people ask me that all the time too!
I think it is "stereo-typical" that women who knit are old, blue hair ladies that sit around in rockers all day, just rocking and knitting. I think that goes for alot of types of crafting.
I get comments from older women in the fabric and craft stores all the time. I don't think the "older" generations have yet to realize that the younger generations are taking to knitting, sewing, etc.
I think you just have to grin and bear it, and explain to people that you can knit much more than babies bonnets & booties! : )
