Post Subject: new apartment - need ideas!
I'm moving into a new apartment in SF next month, and need some decorating ideas! Unfortunately, I'm not allowed to paint (poo!) and *technically* I'm not supposed to alter the walls in any way (including nails, screws, etc). However, the girls who live there right now have plenty of framed art on the walls, so I think I'll be OK on that front. I spent the first part of the summer in South Asia and bought some great textiles and art (and I have a sewing machine), so I'd certainly like to use those things at my new place. Also, I have a metric crapload of wooden curtain rods and harware from Ikea. Aside from the obvious curtain-making factory I could potentially start, does anyone have any fund (and cheap!) ideas?

I plan on making some valentine's day fortune cookies and baking my ass off! LOL
Past Vday gifts have been mini scrapbooks, fleece blankets (the no-sew ones), decoupaged framed art, paintings, small magnets, and mini zines for my loved one...

I'd like to say I sewed them some kick ass kippahs (yarmelke) or knitted them a uterus but, sorry Jean, I made some of Jean's wonderful cleaning products from her GetCrafty book. I love them and was so excited to make enough for my aunts and cousins. I went to a thrift shop close to my parent's house (coastal NC) and got cool old jars and pots and filled them with yummy smelling rug cleaners etc. My brother cracks me up, he says the thrift stores in NC are like entering into someone's lung who has emphysema. But I digress. My relatives just looked at me like a) I was saying their rugs needed a good cleaning and b) hadn't I heard of fabreeze?!!!
So it's wasn't radical as much as underappreciated. My partner and I laughed for, I swear, 45 minutes at how bad my gifts bombed. That alone was worth it.
Thanks for the good ideas, I'm also thinking of doing those 'recipes in a jar' thingies (note to self - buy new jars this time) and maybe framed art from my son (can't go wrong there).
I'll let you know what kind of trouble I get into this year.
